"I'll pay you one million dollars to find my wife and son."
Ex-cop turned bounty hunter Michael Sullivan doesn't think any woman is worth that kind of money, but a job is a job.

And my review:
My first try of Metsy Hingle's writing, and it won't be my last. BEHIND THE MASK was a highly enjoyable, engrossing read, and usually I don't even like romantic suspense that much. This book is written in a wonderful, flowing style that is easy to read. The reader gets absorbed into the plot, because the author never sounds like she's trying to impress the reader with her vocabulary or an overly complex sentence structure. Given how many "flowery" romance novels there are out there on the market, finding a novel written in a down-to-earth style can be difficult.
The characters were wonderful, fully rounded people. Just flawed enough to be human, but not so overly flawed as to be unlikeable. They were real people, people that the reader could easily identify with. They felt like old friends by the end of the book. While Micheal was yet another tortured hero, he was also more than that. And I liked that Lily was a strong, plucky woman, in spite of her sheltered upbringing and miserable marriage to a domineering man. Also, Timmy, the heroine's son, was a complete character, and so adorable that any reader would love him by the end of the book. Children in romance novels often feel like nothing more than flat plot devices, but that wasn't the case here. Creating loveable, yet real, characters has to be one of the hardest things for a writer to accomplish, so I applaud the author for a job well done.
I also felt that the suspense was well executed. The mystery was pretty light and easy to figure out, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story. The author still had me on the edge of my seat for much of the time. When my husband asked me if I wanted to watch a movie with him, I actually snapped at him to leave me alone so I could finish the book. (Oops. Sorry hon! :) It was just that exciting!
My only complaint with this book was that the love story felt just a little bit lacking. Not that they author neglected it, but I did feel that the suspense storyline overpowered it a little. However, that being said, both storylines were well done, and also woven together quite well, so it's only a minor complaint.
While BEHIND THE MASK wasn't a book that I'll be keeping to re-read, it was still well worth the read, and I do recommend it anyone who is a fan of romance, even those who (like me) generally don't like romantic suspense. If you enjoy the novels of Tina Wainscott, you'll probably enjoy this book as well.
The hero, Michael, has been hired to find the heroine, Elisabeth/Lily, by her psychopath husband. This is a romance book, so of course Michael and Lily fall in love with each other and get their HEA. Both were likeable characters, but as they were written, Michael carrried the angst to extremes and both Lily and Michael has moments of less than stellar intelligence. For example, they know the husband and his goons are looking for them, but do they hunker down and use room service until it is time to escape? You guessed it! No, they opted for wandering around out in the open and going to restaurants. Hello, has anyone heard of pizza delivery? There were other instances like this, where the reader had those "you must be kidding me" moments. Despite this, their characterization was executed well enough that they remained appealing characters. It was just that with a bit of tweaking, they could have been so much more than they were.
The husband was a well written, slightly over-the-top villain, who almost stole the show. Definitely evil personified. The young son was a cute, appealing character, and other secondary characters were brought to life by the author's descriptive writing. Although the restaurant employees, the costumer, Lily's grandmother's friend and one of the minions were minor characters, they were fleshed out with enough detail and personality, that they were not cardboard or one-dimensional characters.
The plot about Lily trying to save her son and to escape from the psychotic husband was a good one, and it held my interest. The author presented multiple points of view, which was an effective technique. The reader could share the thoughts of the heroine, hero, and villain, as well as those of one of the minions. In addition, the author alternated scenes between the central characters, so the reader had a sense of the events happening in conjunction with each other and this made it feel more realistic. The plot could have used a little tweaking also, but overall, it held together and engaged me.
This was a very good book for curling up with to pass the time, and it was enjoyable. The author writes well, but this book was a little disappointing. Although it was a good book, it wouldn't have taken much to be even better. The framework was there, and most of it was filled in, but there were a few skimpily covered areas that made it feel patchy.
Despite some flaws, I do recommend this book to anyone who wants a light, entertaining read. The Mira imprint's romantic suspense books are usually not as heavy and dark as mainstream suspense or thriller books, and this book follows that pattern; it entertains without a lot of highly graphic violence. There are some mildly graphic sex scenes, a couple accompanied with some violence by the husband, but these didn't go into much detail. It was more of a PG rated read than an R rated one.
There was one annoying formatting problem. When the story moved between scenes, there was no marking of the division. For example, the reader would be in a scene with the hero and heroine, then the husband would be talking to his minions and the reader would have a few seconds of disconnect until the transition was made. Once the pattern was understood, it wasn't really a problem, but it still should be corrected.
Recommend.
