Whisper Beach: A Novel Kindle Edition
From the New York Times bestselling author of Beach Colors and Breakwater Bay comes this unforgettable story— reminiscent of Kristin Hannah’s beloved novels—of friends, loyalty, and love as three women, who are reunited in the idyllic beach town where they grew up, are forced to re-evaluate their bonds.
Fifteen years ago, seventeen-year-old Vanessa Moran fell in love and lost her virginity but not to the same boy. Pregnant, desperate, and humiliated, she fled friends and family and Whisper Beach, New Jersey, never breathing a word about her secret to anyone. She hasn’t been back since. Now a professional Manhattan organizer, she returns to the funeral of her best friend’s husband. She intends on just paying her respects and leaving—though she can’t deny she also wants the town to see how far she’s come as a successful business woman. But her plans to make this a short visit fall by the wayside when her girlfriends have other ideas.
Dorie, the owner of the pier’s Blue Crab Restaurant where Van and her friends worked as teenagers, needs help. Dorie’s roving husband spends every penny they make and now their restaurant is failing.
Joe, the boy Van left behind without an explanation, has never stopped loving her. While he’s wary of getting hurt again, he also can’t help wondering what would happen if they took up where they left off.
As the summer progresses and the restaurant takes on a new look, trouble comes from unexpected sources. For Van, this summer will test the meaning of friendship and trust—and how far love can bend before it breaks.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2016I really enjoyed most of the novel. I liked the storyline, the realistic characters and the location. It kept me interested and turning pages. I hoped for a better ending to the relationship between Van and Joe. I liked them as a couple and felt the story was leading towards a fulfilling ending for both. Instead I felt the ending incomplete, leaving me hanging, expecting more. I kept looking for a sequel. It ended too quickly after such a long involved plot of character's problems that we wished concluded satisfactorily. What happened to each of them? What happened to the lonely boy who became attached to Joe? I expected a more satisfying tying up of the character's problems. To me, I felt Van and Joe were almost as confused at the finish of the novel as before they found each other after years of a longing, painful separation. It could have been more satisfying with a little more explanation of the characters endings. A sequel concerning the relationship between Van and Joe would be welcome. I felt Van would be content but felt sorry for Joe who needed Van to help fulfill his lonely existence. CLB
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2015First, let me start out by saying this is not a romance; it's realistic women's fiction with characters and situations drawn from real life. If you're looking for a Harlequin type romance that is tied up with a sparkly pink happily-ever-after bow, this is not the book for you. However, if you enjoy well-written books about genuine people dealing with the realities of life, I highly recommend Shelley Noble's Whisper Beach. Ms. Noble knows how to draw characters who come to life. And boy, does she ever bring back memories of high school and the scars those memories often leave on us. Her characters are not perfect, but neither are we, and I dare you not to see yourself or people you've known in the characters who inhabit Whisper Beach. The uplifting message of this book is that people can learn from their mistakes, forgive and be forgiven, and move forward toward a better life. Ms. Noble leaves us feeling glad we spent time visiting Whisper Beach and getting to know the people who call it home.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2016I bought this book because the review compared her to Kristen Hannah. That was an exaggeration. The writing was only ok. The characters were good and the story had potential. The author spent a lot of time on mundane things like getting ready to go out, or long boring conversations about nothing. But Van's long awaited meeting with her father was referred to as a brief reflection the next day with no details. More importantly, there was much build up of Van and Joe and it was never developed. So much potential that begged for more but it just fell flat. All the story lines were left for the reader to figure out for herself. If I wanted to do that, I would have made up a story in my head and skipped the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2020I gave it four stars because it was a slow start but once it grabbed me, I'm so happy I stayed with it! I could relate to the hurt from teenage years and the problems with family issues. Van is such a strong woman but perceives that it's because of the walls she built around herself were needed for continued success. Suze came from money but couldn't live up to her mothers expectations, this would've been a great addition to the story. Was that true or just how she felt and don't we all at sometime feel we let down our parent. I love her clumsiness, it added a relief to the storytelling. Gigi and Dana's characters are both similar and sadly relatable to everyone's life. Teenage years are hard and trying to find where we belong or we think we belong can have long lasting effects on our lives. I'd love to see if any of the characters or storylines continue in any of her other books. One it hooked me, I couldn't put it down.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2016Shelley Noble provides a marvelous read in "Whisper Beach." Her story of women coming together again long after the days of carefree friendships of the summers, before college, careers, and families come to dominate lives provides interesting insight into how perceptions and understandings evolve as maturity and the simple passage of time changes views of ourselves and those around us. Nobles does a good job of character development and her storyline offers humor, romance and mystery. This is a thoroughly enjoyable book that I recommend to anyone reading for pleasure. Moreover, in reading about these women you may find yourself revisiting those days in your own past and gleaning insight for yourself!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2016I actually enjoyed reading the book. It was a page-turner. However, I started realizing toward the end that there were very few pages left, and a lot of things would need to be resolved. Well, surprise, they weren't resolved!! I was left hanging. It's almost as if the author said, "I promised my publisher 400 pages, here they are, I'm done!" I looked to see if maybe the book was part of a series, and as far as I can tell, it's not. I liked the book very much, until the end. It makes me wary of purchasing any more of her books, if this is how she typically ends her books.
