Neo-Pulp Science Fiction with Comedic Flair
A big, bad guy in a worse universe
Hard Luck Hank is a science fiction comedy series. The main protagonist is a mutant fixer operating within the criminal world of a technologically advanced, yet culturally backward, civilization.
The stories draw inspiration not only from pulp era science fiction, but gritty noir detective stories, super hero comics, and fantasy. More than anything, the books are intended to be fun and funny.

Author Profile
Hi, everyone. I have recently been diagnosed with cancer. My writing has fallen off sharply because I've been housed in hospitals for months undergoing procedures. At this point, I am not certain if I will be able to continue writing.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my readers and listeners and supporters. I consider myself truly fortunate to have been able to be a professional writer, which is the culmination of a life-long dream. While I hope I can continue, if nothing else, I am thankful I got to bring a little silly joy to the lives of strangers. Thank you.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2014Yes, it's short, no, it's not part of an on-going story.
It's perfect for those that have read the two Hank books and want more, or for someone who hasn't read anything about Hank and wants a taste.
I *HATE* short stories - just when you get into them they are over~! Yet I rushed out (to Amazon, at my computer) and bought this *knowing* it was short, why? Because I love the author's writing style, I miss Hank, and want more Hank, and am glad I got a glimpse into a few of his early days...
I've maintained (and wrote the author many times) begging for a book about Hank's early life. I do hope this is but a taste, a teaser... I want a 350+ page book. What was Hank's childhood like? Did he do stupid stunts to explore the limits of his 'skills'?
Anyhow - this is a perfect short book of a few snapshots of Hank's early years - perfect to give us more, or a perfect intro to read prior to the other books about Hank.
Hank is my hero :) Yes, I am a fanboy~!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2022Glad I read several of the other books in the series first as it helped make this book make sense.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2014I abosolutely loved this collection of short stories of Hank's young years! It goes right back to when Hank got to Belvaille and why. It also explored a little of his family history (and how he got his signature catchphrase). The humour and the tone are reminiscent of the first book, while still keeping things fresh.
The only con I can come up with is that I wish it were longer. Otherwise, if you enjoyed Hank's other hard luck adventures you'll love this as much as I did.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2015A long time science fiction fan but I just couldn't get into this one. There are more in the series but I'm not tempted to see if there's any improvement. If you have PRIME you might want to borrow this one first.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2014I just finished the first novel in the trilogy and saw this when I was looking for more Hard Luck Hank. You must read this if you're at all into Hank. The stories are amusing and round out his character. Although not essential to the rest of the saga they are just darn good science fiction of the somewhat humorous variety with the caveat that if you like your science fiction to be heavy on the science this series may disappoint you.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2014Some short stories of Hard Luck Hank.
Hank is awesome; a punching bag who can choose to be what he wants to be in a criminal world.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2014Nice background on Hank. If you like the other hard luck Hank books it's worth picking up for .99. I wouldn't pay more than that as you can read this in no time at all.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2014A fun read that takes the edge off, or at least beats, crashes and crunches the edges. It is really hard not to luv Hank.

4.0 out of 5 stars Need to get your Hank fix?
If you've read the first 2 Hank books and loved them, then Early Years is pretty much required reading. It gives us more insight into Hank and Belvaille's past, which fans should find genuinely interesting. In fact, it's surprising how much new insight we learn about Hank from this short little collection, which really highlights that it's the great characters which make these books so enjoyable. My only real complaint would be that the stories are very short (you should be able to finish the whole thing in about 30 minutes), but again, it's hard to argue when you need to get your fix while waiting for Prince of Suck to come out...
