The House without a Christmas Tree (The Addie Mills Stories) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 150 ratings

It’s Christmastime in 1946, and all Addie wants is a pair of cowboy boots and a Christmas tree

Ten-year-old Addie lives in Clear River, Nebraska, population fifteen hundred, with her stoic but loving father and quirky grandmother. Carla Mae is her neighbor and best friend in the fifth grade. Carla Mae’s house is different than Addie’s—she has five siblings and another on the way, while Addie is an only child.

It’s the week before Christmas, and shopping lists are at the front of the girls’ minds. Addie’s house doesn’t have a tree—her dad says they are a waste of money, and they’ll be opening presents at Uncle Will’s anyway. Uncle Will has a tree, but to Addie, it doesn’t feel like Christmas without a tree of their own. Then she comes up with the perfect plan. Will it make this the best Christmas they’ve ever had, or will her father never forgive her?

The movie is one of my "must-sees" at Christmas, and I've always wanted to read the book. I was surprised that it's a short book. They did a wonderful job on the movie... one of those VERY rare times when the movie is just as good. I like reading heartwarming true stories like this. Gail Rock is a wonderful writer who doesn't waste words just to have a longer book, and I appreciate that a lot. I plan to read more of her books soon.

This book is one of my favorite Christmas stories. It is very nostalgic and sweet. The story is told by Addie, a fifth grader girl who lives with her stern father and her caring grandmother. The story centers around the fact that Addie has never had a Christmas tree in her home. For reasons we learn about later in the story, her father forbids her havinghaving a tree. Her actions and reactions are are so typical of a 10year old girl. The setting of the book which takes place in 1947 is reminiscent of my childhood and places I have lived. The story is short, easy to read and well worth your time to read. There is a very good movie based on this book with Jason Robards as the father and Mildred Natwick as. the grandmother. iIt s well done and never veers from the book. Check your television guide. The movie is showing this month. Happy reading....and viewing.

Great story, and one that has been a staple in our household for many years, now being propagated to another generation, where I'm sure it will become a staple in their Christmas seasons.

I read this book to my classes when I taught 4th grade in Nebraska. It was touching and heartwarming, we especially liked the school Christmas party. The characters were so well developed. Everyone related to Addie and her lonely life. I remember it being on TV with Jason Robards as the father. How can we get it back on TV?

I plan to give this book to our great-granddaughters . I remember it was a favorite to read during the Christmas Season to my classrooms of Third and Fourth Graders. This was probably because it reminded me of my childhood when we still drew names, had a Christmas program for the community, went home for lunch, decorated a classroom tree, etc. It is a wonderful, believable story of empathy, emotions, and love.

Each year, I would read this book at Christmas time to my 5th and 6th grade students. I would also read The Thanksgiving Treasure by Gail Rock at Thanksgiving time. I never tired of reading either book and looked forward to reading them every year...it became a traditon for me. The children seemed to enjoy the stories very much. I purchased a copy of this book along with the DVD of the movie for a little girl for Christmas, and she was very pleased with both. (The DVD can also be purchased on Amazon.) This is a timeless story, and I highly recommend The House Without a Christmas Tree.
