Monster: Poems Kindle Edition
Well before Robin Morgan was known as a feminist leader, literary magazines published her as a serious poet, and in 1979 she received a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship in poetry. Monster, her first collection, originally published in 1972, contains work that will astonish, disorient, and move readers in powerful ways.
But Monster is more than just a book; it has become a phenomenon. Written at a time of political turmoil during the birth of contemporary feminism, the title poem was adopted by women as the anthem of the women’s movement; it was chanted at demonstrations and some of its lines became slogans. “Arraignment” stirred an international controversy over Ted Hughes’s influence on Sylvia Plath’s suicide—complete with lawsuits, the banning of this book, and the publication of underground, pirated feminist editions, all of which Morgan reveals in her new preface.
From her well-wrought poems in classical forms to the searing energy and poignant lyricism of the longer, later ones, Morgan’s work when it was first released spoke to women hungry for validation of their own reality—and the book sold thirty thousand copies in hardcover alone in its first six months, which was unheard of for poetry.
Available now for the first time in years, Monster is an intense, propulsive journey deep into the heart of one of feminism’s greatest heroes.

Review
“A powerful, passionate, angry commentary on modern woman and the society that creates and defines her.” —Library Journal
“Monster has given strength to every woman we’ve shown the poems to. And if not only reading the poems but publishing them becomes a revolutionary experience, then so much more power to sisterhood.” —Melbourne Radical Feminists

I love poetry. I can't really pinpoint what it is about this form of writing that transcends fictional writing but it's something special.
Oddly - because usually it's the synopsis of the book that pulls me in - the cover of this book is what grabbed my attention and really made me want to read it, the title was pretty eye catching as well.
To be quite honest I didn't understand what the heck I was reading in the first chapter/section. It wasn't until I was getting close to the second chapter/section that I realized this book or these poems are about how women are viewed (or should be viewed) by the author, Robin Morgan.
“I am not yours when you are too much mine”
“You are not mine when I am too much yours”
“How could I be caught dead being alive?”
“Why is my madness not beautiful to me?”
These four lines hit my heart something fierce. The meaning behind them I know is mind blowing. The fact that I don't FULLY understand what they mean in no way takes away from their beauty.
In a book that contained numerous of poems the ones that really grabbed me and had my heart pumping harder were Annunciation, the Vigil, Arraignment, and Monster.
One might wonder why the poem Monster wasn't placed first because of the name of the book, well once you read this masterpiece you'll understand that no other poem in this WHOLE book would've been able to conclude as that poem did. Whatever questions or concerns you gathered while reading, this poem answers everything.
I am truly glad that I've read this book of treasures. This book has reaffirmed my pride of being a woman in an ego-ridden society. Some of the things said were over the top for me but I was okay with it because to me poetry is a deeper expression of ones self, so EVERY word written showed Robin Morgan's heart to me and I will be forever grateful in having the opportunity to glimpse at the woman she is.
“A man should be careful not to arouse the anger of a woman, for he has to sleep sometime – and with both eyes closed”
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2014I rarely read poem, let alone poetry book like this one. But it's safe to say that I enjoyed it. Sure there are more than one poems that gave me chills because of how deep and scary the lines are, but overall I gave a four shining stars to this book.
Not sure if I want to read another poetry book anytime soon, but hey, if it's good (and free) then why not? :)

- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2014For one poem and one poem only this work would be classic: "Arraignment." Morgan is an excellent poet. Much better than Adrienne Rich due to her greater grasp of archetypes but not quite to the level of Sylvia Plath. You have to buy this book or one of the myriad anthologies in existence to find "Arraignment", her excoriation of Ted Hughes. For some odd reason you can't just download the poem.
