Gangsters & Grifters: Classic Crime Photos from the Chicago Tribune Kindle Edition
A collection of some never-before-published vintage photos that “exposes Chicago’s underbelly . . . an era full of guns, gore and gangsters” (WGLT.org).
Created from the Chicago Tribune's vast archives, Gangsters and Grifters is a collection of photographs featuring infamous criminals, small-time bandits, hoodlums, and more at shocking crime scenes. These vintage glass-plate and acetate negatives were taken from the early 1900s through the 1950s, and they have been largely unseen for generations. That is because most have never been published, only having been witnessed by the photographers and police in the moments after an arrest, crime, or even murder. Included are graphic crime scenes, raw evidence, and depictions of searing emotions, captured on film during a time when photographers were given unprecedented access alongside police. Some photographs resemble film noir movie stills. Some are cartoonish. All feature real people, real drama, and real crimes. Accompanying information about each is included wherever possible, often with archived news stories.
Gangsters & Grifters is a powerful, visually stunning look back into the dark story of Chicago’s nefarious crime underworld. These fascinating, surprising, and entrancing photos reveal still-unsolved murder mysteries and portraits of notorious gang overlords like John Dillinger and Al Capone. This is a must-have for photography buffs, history lovers, and anyone curious about the seedy underbelly of early twentieth-century Chicago.

This book appears to be new even though it was listed as used. Thank you seller!

Lots of great, high quality photos. Really captures the era. Highly recommended. My only complaint is that I wish they told more of what the photos were showing - the stories tend to be brief and I wish they were longer (there is room on the page) My hope is for a volume 2.

I'm giving the editors of this photo book three stars for their hard work digging through the
photo archives deep in the bowels of the Tribune Building. One of the editors of the book
appeared on 'Chicago Tonight' where some of the best photos from this collection were
shown, so I didn't hesitate to buy a copy on Amazon. Unfortunately, the remaining photos-
those that weren't shown on the program-are, well... just 'okay', at best. Not a bad book, really,
but I wish I'd looked through a copy at my local bookseller before I bought.
On a related note, I just received a copy of the 2015 Menard's calendar with my Sunday
Chicago Tribune. It features some wonderful photos of downtown Chicago from the 1930's
and it was 'FREE'! Oh well...guess I'm more a fan of buildings than bandits.

No black people in Chicago? My uncle worked for the major black paper during most of the period covered by this book and he has ensured me there was.

I got this book, having seen an earlier book of images about images from the Chicago Tribune. I'm not sure this book has as many interesting, challenging images as I had hoped. It's reasonably interesting but a little lacking in variety.
