Mary Poppins: Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Comes Back, Mary Poppins Opens the Door, and Mary Poppins in the Park Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 1,145 ratings

The first four books featuring the world’s most beloved nanny, plus delightful bonus features!

Since the 1934 publication of
Mary Poppins, stories of this magical nanny have delighted children and adults for generations. This collection includes the first four tales by P. L. Travers, illustrated by Mary Shepard: Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Comes Back, Mary Poppins Opens the Door, and Mary Poppins in the Park.

Also including a foreword by Gregory Maguire, author of
Wicked, who explores the significant differences between the book and movie versions, and an essay by P. L. Travers about the writing of Mary Poppins, this collection lets you travel with Mary on the east wind to Cherry Tree Lane in these stories that inspired films, a stage show, and young imaginations the world over.

“When Mary Poppins is about, her young charges can never tell where the real world merges into make-believe. Neither can the reader, and that is one of the hallmarks of good fantasy.” —

Pamela Lyndon Travers, OBE (/ˈtrævərs/; born Helen Lyndon Goff; 9 August 1899 – 23 April 1996), was an Australian-born British novelist, actress, and journalist who migrated to England and lived most of her adult life there. She is known best for the Mary Poppins series of children's books featuring the magical English nanny Mary Poppins.

Upon immigrating to England in 1924, Goff began to write under the pen name P. L. Travers. In 1933 she began writing the novel Mary Poppins, first of the Poppins books. During World War II, while working for the British Ministry of Information, Travers traveled to New York City. At that time Walt Disney contacted her about selling to Disney Studios the rights for a film adaptation of Mary Poppins, whose sequel Mary Poppins Comes Back was also in print. After years of contact, Walt Disney did obtain the rights and the Disney film Mary Poppins premièred in 1964. In 2004, a new, British musical theatre adaptation of the books and the film opened in the West End; it premièred on Broadway in 2006.

For services to literature, Travers was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 1977.

Love the books. If you want to hear what
Mary Poppins was REALLY like. I am
Reading this series out loud to my daughters ages 4 and 7. We love them.
Chapters are a good length not too long, and the box set is with it to follow her sorry.

The box is just a cardboard sleeve not a nice box. If you want a nice container for them then this set isn’t what you want. The books are all paperback, and in great condition. I wish it was a bit prettier of a container for them, this one won’t last to pass down to my girls unless maybe I laminate it.

Mary Poppins series was one of the books I wanted to try for long but couldn't accomplish. Then I had an opportunity to purchase it and enjoyed first four books. From a few information from the Disney movie, my image of Mary Poppins was a sweet lady who is good with songs and who knows how to entertain kids. Then I tried the books and learned that Mary Poppins is a lady who loves nothing but herself. More of tart than sweet. But the fantasy I learned through four books were interesting and something that any children like to experience as fantasy. I haven't decided to finish second four books, but I might enjoy if I purchased them and read.

My brother and I, who are now in our 60s, read these when we were little kids. We happily went to see Mary Poppins, the movie, at Radio City Music Hall in NYC, but left very unhappily, practically in tears. We hated what had been done to the books: ruined, completely ruined. Since then, I have pitied every child who formed an opinion of Mary Poppins based upon that insipid and misguided movie.
Although Disney nearly succeeded in killing Mary Poppins for several generations of children, she is still alive and well in these books, and ready to be discovered by "new" children, and rediscovered by "old" children, like me, who will find that none of her magic has faded. These books are really well written, and more than a few chapters have a magic about them that only British children's books of a certain time possess, the kind of magic that stays with you and enriches you for many years.

Beautiful and packaged so nicely. I love the box for the set. It's a perfect way to introduce the wonderful Mary Poppins stories to young readers. They don't have to wait for the next one when they finish the first! It's all right there and are a great read. They are the perfect books to read to young children and share as a family. My children, young and teen-aged have been enraptured by the writing of P.L. Travers and love comparing the books to the movie and love exploring the worlds created and visited by Mary Poppins.

If you have only seen the Mary Poppins movies, you are missing the true magic. To own these books means being able to know the secret world of the Banks children and their nanny in detail. Plus enjoying all the adventures without a two hour constraint. I have been reading and rereading them for over seventy years and still find little nuggets of joy l missed the many times before. Do, please, enjoy every word.
