A Sniper's Conflict Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 1,523 ratings

The Author sets the scene with his early experiences as a sniper during his 2004 Cimic House Al-Amarah tour in Iraq where hard lessons were learnt. Next stop after rigorous training came participation on Op HERRICK 8/9 in Helmand District, Afghanistan.Having already been a Sniper Instructor for eight years by the start of the Helmand Tour, he is well qualified to explain sniping tactics and techniques in fascinating detail. Together with the operational background, his descriptions of many sniper engagements during the Battalion group's eventful and gruelling tour, make this a thrilling and instructive read.Intense though the action was, there were long periods of watching and waiting. Cool nerves are called for; witnessing the taking of life even from distances of a kilometre is traumatic. Snipers work in pairs so relationship and trust are all important. This is a superb action-packed description of professional soldiering at the sharp end. The Author's depth of knowledge and experience make this as good as a sniper's manual.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book, a really good book written to explain everything so that even a layman would understand the tactics

Vividly descriptive non-stop action. The author not only provides enough technical background to understand the complexity of the trade, but also expertly ties said knowledge into the slow motion description of his one shot one kill engagements. This is not the romanticized account of the trials and tribulations of a lone wolf sniper, but rather a down and dirty account of everything that goes on during a deployment, comradeship and the effect a highly trained marksman can have on moral and the outcome of operations. Of all of his accounts, the one that truly stuck with me was his experience in Iraq "Yellow Three." Wow! Just Wow! A somber and humbling experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal personal account of an ex-sniper!

I've recently become addicted to reading soldier's accounts of war. After having finished Mills' 'Sniper One' my friend recommended 'A Sniper's Conflict' and I was quickly engrossed in this man's journey on the front line. The author is a consummate professional to his specialist role and he doesn't sugar coat or glorify what happened out there (which I personally appreciated). The book will at times make you question the disparity between the events we all saw in the media compared to reality of what the soldiers were experiencing out there first hand. Whilst it is thoroughly technical, it successfully held my attention. I found myself wanting to learn more and more throughout, especially about the weapons and equipment utilised by the modern sniper. You’ll come to learn about the skills and dedication required for this role. You are dropped into the heat of battle immediately and from there the book does not let up.

I was so immersed whilst reading that I was able to picture myself alongside the author during his situations on the front line. It’s an extremely real and honest account of war. I felt a vast array of emotions through, from excitement and adrenaline, to the distress over the very real casualties that happened. There is no bravado on display here, the author views what he did as a necessity to protect the lives of his comrades. The descriptions of the intense scenarios he was placed in and the fact that he made it out of there in one piece still has me flabbergasted. He successfully portrays the gritty reality of what our soldiers continue to endure in order to protect the freedoms of our country. I actually enjoyed it much more than 'Sniper One' personally and I could easily recommend ‘A Sniper’s Conflict’. You won't be disappointed and it’s well worth the cost. My brother is currently reading the book as of writing this review and cannot put it down... And usually, I can never get him to shut up!

This is an honest man's attempt to show the risks and actions of a sniper in the field of conflict. It is well written and no doubt an honest portrayal of his vast sniping experience. I would have liked to have learned more of the frustrations of failures in the chain of command in modern conflict and the fact that the internet and cell phone had impacted upon the lives of the modern soldier.

A pretty mundane report of a soldier's dailr routine with an element of repetitive laws justifying the importance of a sniper, or was it self justification?
