- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2021Better title would have been "Downed BRITISH airmen on the Western Front..." Some inclusion of downed U.S. airmen, only passing mention of the French and no German stories at all. Made for an okay read for about an hour before I couldn't wait to be done with it. Not recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2022One of the best books written about the RFC
During the first world war, the pilot's of various nationality, those who survived those who became prisoners of war and their individual experience of escaped POWs and those who sadly didn't survive but are still remembered, all are recorded here.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2019Overall a very good read of some compelling personal stories as prisoners of war and the many attempts to escape; some successful. The downside was finding in my copy many instances of printing errors such as random characters appearing in the middle of a sentence, words misspelled, or the wrong word used and a few occasions where half or whole paragraphs were duplicated within the same chapter; thus 4 stars instead of 5. Setting these printing errors aside, It's a good book.

1.0 out of 5 stars I read a lot, but have never previously left ...
I read a lot, but have never previously left a review. This book however is dire. It has no obvious theme, no clear introduction ( for example the intro includes a gripping first hand account of a trench raid - why? It is never explained). It rambles around various chapters, again with limited obvious theme. For any that know anything of the subject there is very little new here.
However, time and again whole pages are repeated - verbatim. It is extraordinary, it is almost as though it has been half edited - the editor having copied and moved a section, without removing the original piece.
And it has the nerve to charge £25. I feel genuinely cheated
I presume Bowman's other 'proper' books are at least coherent. Avoid this one - or wait until it's 99p in the remained bins.
