To me, this book is in the top 3 or 4 books of the 25-volume Freddy series. Florida and Detective are also in that group. The plot, the personalities, and the battle scenario are all superbly crafted. I read all of the series that I could get my hands on at the public library as a child of the late 50s. I read them and tape recorded many of them for my son, who pretty well wore out the tapes (no iPods, iPhones, or portable DVD players in those days). I read the full series, in order, end-to-end to my young daughter, who is the same age as my grandson. They were all simultaneously in print only once -- a brief run by Overland Press. The full availability now in electronic form is a huge blessing.

I have a tendency to avoid reviewing these books because I don't feel I can take time to do them justice. They are absolutely superb children's literature. They are very engaging, effectively combining humor, intrigue, and action. They offer sound life-lessons and are terrific vocabulary builders. If you're just learning about the series, I suggest you Google "Friends of Freddy the Pig." That may help you understand how much they have meant to so many people.

I recommend this book and the rest of the Freddy the pig series 100%. I read them all when I was a kid and I bought this book and Freddy Goes to Florida for the kid I used to babysit for her birthday. These stories are imaginative and lovely.

What does it mean to be brave? When Freddy and the rest of the talking animals on Mr. Bean's farm are terrorized by the unknown, evil being in the Big Woods known only as the Ignormus, they learn that being brave isn't a lack of fear. Bravery is facing your fears and standing up to them, refusing to run away from a fight or from the possibility of terrible consequences. Bravery is standing up to your enemies, whether you've seen their face or have only imagined it in your worst nightmare. Bravery is being able to sing a song about yourself as you creep through the deep, dark woods, alone and about to confront your unknown enemy. Though they initially quail at the thought of facing the Ignormus, Freddy and his friends eventually find the courage to go into battle and save the peaceful life they know on Mr. Bean's farm.

Like this one, all of the books in Walter Brooks' Freddy series are delightful, full of vibrant characters, amusing adventures and not-so-subtle lessons on life. Freddy is a charming hero and one who is certainly not without his faults. His foibles make him all the more "human" and provided the author with abundant material to teach young readers the importance of such things as courage, honesty, loyalty and more. I highly recommend all of the Freddy books to young and old readers alike!

These "Freddy" books are a tremendous advantage in that they speak to children and not down to them. Wonderfully written and carry a last vestige of traditional American standards for morality and values not seen in childrens books anymore. Was very happy to find so many of the series through Amazon.
