About the Author

Walter R. Brooks was born in Rome, New York on January 9, 1886, and died in Roxbury, New York on August 17, 1958. Brooks attended the University of Rochester and, after graduation, worked for the American Red Cross and the Woodrow Wilson Foundation. He became associate editor of Outlook in 1928 and subsequently was a staff writer for several magazines, including The New Yorker. The short stories he began writing at this time were published in The Saturday Evening Post, Atlantic Monthly, and Esquire. Brooks's short story "Ed Takes the Pledge" was the basis for the 1950s television series Mr. Ed, but his most lasting achievement is the Freddy the Pig series, which began in 1928 with To and Again (Freddy Goes to Florida). He subsequently wrote twenty-five more delightful books starring "that charming ingenious pig" (The New York Times), all of which are now available from The Overlook Press.

Kurt Wiese (1887-1974) illustrated over 300 children’s book and wrote and illustrated another 20 books. He received two Newbery Awards and two Caldecott Honor Book Awards.

My little neighborhood library had a dozen Freddy the Pig books on its shelves 75 years ago when I found and read them as a little boy in third or fourth grade. I thought they were cleverly written then and, re-reading them today, I find equal delight and appreciation. How wonderful that these books are back in print for new generations! The author didn't condescend or write babyish stories. The vocabulary is admirably challenging but not difficult; and there's wisdom and insight about character, problem-solving, conflict management, and other life lessons on these pages, gently slipped into the stories between the laugh-out-loud antics and page-turning suspense. This is a book to read to your grandchildren, to give to your children, and to re-read as an adult with satisfaction and delight: The Freddy books are good fun, great literature—they make you fall in love with reading.

This is a fantastic book, and I would highly recommend any Freddy the Pit book. They are wonderful for both children and adults, and very enjoyable to read. They make wonderful bedtime stories.

NOTE: When I bought this, it was the cheapest copy online. But most of the time, Amazon has trumped up prices compared to Ebay, Abebooks and Alibras. Check those websites before making a purchase here.

This Freddie the Pig book was a present for a young lady, but adults can enjoy Freddy too. Great imagination! Easy read! The only drawback is, with 258 pages, it ends too soon. You just might want to read another and another; the Freddy the Pig books are so much fun.

I read the Freddy the Pig books in elementary school and decided after lo these many years, to reread them. Still fun. Silly but fun.

My mother grew up with the Freddy books and we found a few in various libraries when I was growing up. I'm so glad they are all back in print! I'm buying them for my children now. Welcome back, Freddy, Charles, Mrs. Wiggins, Jinx and the gang!

My family and I recently discovered Walter brooks in the book, "Freddy goes to Florida", and read it along with listening to the audio cd. We enjoyed it so much we finished it in 2 days. So now we are continuing to discover more adventures in this series. Freddy the Magician is fun filled and magical!
