James the Connoisseur Cat: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 316 ratings

The delightful crime-solving and aristocratic social adventures of an American  antiques expert and a British feline with finesse

It’s love at first sight when a businessman visiting London meets a silver-gray cat named James in the lobby of his apartment house. The two begin meeting regularly for cocktails—single-malt whiskey, neat, for James—and attending posh parties, where James first makes a name for himself by cracking the case of a priceless jewel scam.

Soon James is on the prowl, deterring pickpockets on the subway and ferreting out stamp forgeries and counterfeit paintings. In between crime capers, he screens potential tenants, spends the holidays at an ancestral estate in Devon where the crème de la crème of British society anoints him Sir James, and indulges in his penchants for pâté de fois gras and matchmaking with inimitable panache.

James the Connoisseur Cat is the 1st book in the Connoisseur Cat novels, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

Like the comics Garfield or Heathcliff, the silver cat James, in this excruciatingly whimsical tale of a brainy feline, is a cat only in (what we interpret as) giant ego and vanity. Like his cartoon counterparts, James is merely an irritating human in fur-- but, unlike them, he has classy tastes. The narrator, an agent in the fine-arts business, meets James for the first time in his London apartment house. James, ``owned'' by the building's proprietor, pushes the elevator button to the correct floor. So then it's sharing whiskey (James prefers the best) and pat‚--and the adventures begin. James falls in love with a porcelain cat and recovers jewels for Lord Henry, whose romance with the painter Helena--her show is rescued by James, who paints her an abstract piece--has a happy ending in the ancestral home. James spots a false Constable, works for a stamp expert and detects forgeries, evicts obnoxious tenants, appears on TV in Puss 'n Boots, puts in a day or so as an Egyptian god, etc. etc. Ho-hum. An iffy item for the cat fancier (depends on one's whimsy quotient), and a maybe (the fine-arts milieu is rather special) as a juvenile crossover. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. This is an exceptionally delightful book. Read it and book #2 during an 19 hour power failure - thank you Kindle app. Kept me turning the pages and kept me from being frustrated with the lack of other power. It is a fun read. I have fallen totally in love with James. I especially appreciate his taste in scotch as I was never a scotch drinker until I found Laphroaig. (spelling?).
The interaction among all the characters is entertaining, especially when there are attempts to deny James access to various venues. Read it and enjoy. It will take you out of yourself, relax you and give you a mini-vacation.
also read the next James book - equally enjoyable. So far have only found 2 books for this series but hope there are or will be more.

I enjoyed the opportunity to encounter a cat of many talents. Who could fine forged stamps or for a short time serve as an Egyptian god? If you love and appreciate wise cats this may be the book for you.

Loved this captivating story with the adorable cat solving everyone’s problems. Very easy reading, no blood or gore, but enough intrigue to keep the story moving. First book that I’ve read in awhile that I didn’t want to put down and at the same time didn’t want it to end because it felt like a friend. Looking forward to reading the next book.

An enjoyable little story set in an indeterminate time in London, where a remarkable cat rules over a large apartment house and shows throughout the book that he can not only approve or disapprove the applicants for tenancy in the house, he can also detect forgeries, determine validity of works of art, act, and deliver prophesies in his form of the goddess Bastet. Amusing.

I gave this book five stars for its simplicity, good use of language and image, and my delight in the impossibly clever and vain felibe James. Other characters are likable in what amounts to a series of short stories held together by narrative from James' temporary roommate.

Adventures in town and country, on the set and in a temple as James tries on roles and his human friends try to keep up.

I actually really liked the book--the characters, the interaction, the lack of blood and gore. I thought it was a "cozy mystery," but this first book to me was a sort of introduction to all of the characters. Not your standard mystery, which begins with a murder or something, that gets resolved at the end. It was a compilation of multiple little mysteries, I guess. I'm reading the second book, as I like the characters, but that one also is not shaping up as a mystery in the traditional sense.

I loved this book and I loved James. He is everything I know a cat can be. I am tempted to get the second novel in this series but I will wait a while. I don't want to over indulge the cat lady in me.

What a pleasant, humorous story. I like talking animal stories, but this isn’t one of them and it works better here. So no the cat doesn’t talk. Although I will say the people who interpret his looks/communication are quite gifted. This is a refreshingly nice story.
