The Power of Curiosity: How to Have Real Conversations That Create Collaboration, Innovation and Understanding Kindle Edition
As leaders, parents, or teachers, navigating difficult conversations is part of the job. How do we keep calm and achieve a productive outcome, all while keeping our relationships intact?
The secret is curiosity.
Curiosity is the innovation-driving, emotion-calming skill that comes so naturally to us as children, but gets so easily buried beneath our busy, multitasking lifestyles. The good news is that we simply have to relearn what we already know!
In The Power of Curiosity, mother-daughter executive coaching team Kathy Taberner and Kirsten Taberner-Siggins walk you through the Curiosity Skills and introduce a step-by-step process to use anytime—but especially when challenging conversations arise. In The Power of Curiosity you’ll learn:
- How to be fully present in every conversation, even when distractions abound
- The five listening choices you always have available at home, work, or school
- Specific calming strategies to access when negative emotions run high

"Kathy and Kirsten have drawn on their extensive experience as executive coaches to help all of us learn to pause, take a breath, and - instead of thoughtlessly reacting, assuming, judging, or blaming -begin to get curious. They offer thoughtful guidance and practical tools at the heart of the matter: clarity, understanding and real human connection." - Brigid Shulte, New York Times bestselling author of Overwhelmed: Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the Time
"Kathy and Kirsten's work on being present when we listen to others, and choosing how to listen, has had a profound impact on my conflict resolution work as a mediator and negotiation trainer. The Power of Curiosity is a must read for learning how to apply these skills to our difficult conversations, and indeed all our conversations - to listen better, truly understand and connect with others, and move forward in our relationships - whether negotiating a large business contract, acting as a leaders in our organizations, or enriching our personal relationships". - Colleen Cattell, ENS International Negotiation Consultant
"The Power of Curiosity nails it! It is exactly how every successful person I know lives or strives to live their life. A must read!" Joey Gibbons, The Gibbons Hospitality Group

But somewhere along the way, as we grow into adulthood, we lose our sense of curiosity. Is it when our parents become frustrated with our millions of questions--as they’re thinking about other things in their lives and are not present in the moment--and tell us to stop asking them or make us feel bad for asking them? Is it when our teachers, who don’t have the time or means to answer the myriad of questions thrown at them, dismiss these questions or make us feel we aren’t smart enough because we don’t already know the answer?
Sadly, however it happens, curiosity in adulthood is hard to find. We live in a time-pressured world, always anticipating what is coming next with little time to be curious about what is happening now.
A recent Globe and Mail (BC) interview with Brigid Schulte, author of Overwhelmed: Work, Love, and Play: When No One Has the Time, pointed out that North Americans feel they are time constrained, which impacts their ability to be curious. Our offices are now our homes; our homes are now our offices. Technology tracks our every move, “connecting” us with friends on social media. Expectations of people are high, and people are trying to do everything at once. As a consequence, our communication is brief and our instructions shallow, leaving little room for listening, inquiry, and understanding.
But curiosity shouldn’t be something we grow out of. In fact, curiosity has been recognized as one of the most important skills needed by a leader today. In 2011, Forbes recognized curiosity as “the one trait all innovative leaders share,” using the success of Steve Jobs as an example: “Jobs wasn’t curious because he wanted to be successful. He became successful because he was so curious.”

About the authors
Kirsten Siggins is the co-founder of the Institute Of Curiosity, a TEDx speaker, and a best-selling author. Kirsten holds a BA from Dalhousie University, a Certificate in Executive Coaching from RRU, and is a certified Individual & Team Emotional Intelligence Practitioner through Learning In Action.
Institute of Curiosity specializes in Emotional Intelligence, Difficult Conversations, Change Agility, Executive Coaching. We use a unique tool for leaders and teams to understand their internal experience under stress so they can move through challenges & increase productivity.
Kathy is a certified executive coach with a background in industry and a passion to work with leaders to change the world, one conversation at a time.
Kathy is a retired occupational therapist whose work in industry helped her understand the importance of leadership in organizations and motivated her to complete a MA in Leadership and Training at Royal Roads University.
Her work in the coaching field showed her the power of communication skills, awareness of self and relationships. She found the underlying key to all of these is reflection, learning and being open and non-judging to better understand others. She is a self -described ‘learning junkie’.
The more she became curious and focused on relationships, the more she realized most people fail to explore and seek to understand, preferring to stay stuck in their own heads and perspectives. This creates confusion and leads to conflict. Not the way to support collaboration and create understanding.
Working with her daughter Kirsten, she became curious, exploring different communication models and ways of being in conversation. They observed how people tended to hold to their own perspectives and beliefs, failing to appreciate those of others. Instead, people make the assumption that others have the same unique perspectives they do, even though the experiences of others can be very different from theirs.
The more they explored, the more they shared with others in their work when coaching and facilitating learning with clients. The feedback shared reflected many ‘aha’ moments for their clients and an opportunity to share their thoughts with others.
Kathy is continuously motivated by those she connects with and tries to be the inspiration that supports others to be the best they can be. She is a positive person whose glass is always half full (sometimes with wine), who believes fun and laughter are fundamental to a life well-lived. Kathy is a lifelong learner who supports and encourages others in their learning journey. She believes when someone believes in themselves, they can do just about anything.
She lives in the Okanagan region of British Columbia, Canada and enjoys hiking, water sports, skiing, cycling, cooking and travel.
Kathy believes 'we can all change the world, one conversation at a time.'

What's your preferred way of bridging differences in values and opinions?
As one who studies communication, connection and conflict, I really appreciated this book's balance, content, breadth and style. The writers are coaches who bring a relevance and accessibility to curiosity that has been intellectualized by previous writers on this topic.
As we live in a collaborative world today, I found it helpful as a reset for industrial age (hierarchical) thinking, making it a great fit for a new society where information is immediately available to all.
The book's chapters layout an easy-to-follow, transformative process designed to engage each other -- without triggering each other's hot buttons. In addition, the authors offer you a very useful and rich (PDF) workbook that has all of the charts, diagrams, and many exercises.
I paid for the Kindle version, and I have underlined a LOT of content, and have only a few chapters to go. Soon I realized that I wanted to buy the voice version, as it's easier/faster for me to absorb the material by ear, and I can listen to it at the gym or driving. The Audible version is exceptionally well-performed and very easy to listen to, unlike some other narrations that are not so pleasing to the ear.
This is a wonderful and complete effort that will help many people who desire to ask more / better questions to create greater understanding, find and create common ground/alignment, and levels the playing field. It's a valuable contribution to the world of appreciative inquiry literature.
I am glad I learned about it and am pleased to recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2016The Power of Curiosity is a well-written, comprehensive book about how curiosity can enrich our lives and strengthen our relationships. Not only did I find this book helpful in enhancing interactions in my own life, as a parent, it helped me see the importance of fostering curiosity with my children. By being an engaged parent who listens, I can deepen my connection with my kids. Furthermore, by fostering a spirit of curiosity and discovery, I can help them grow into more effective, competent communicators and life-long learners.
Authors Kathy Taberner and Kirsten Siggins do an excellent job of explaining how curiosity can help us in all kinds of conversations. For example, few us were ever taught how to engage in conflict in a respectful and thoughtful manner. Conflict brings up powerful emotions. Many of us go into confrontation with the goal of shutting the other person down--or we aren’t even sure what outcome is that we’re hoping for. While we don't have to agree with the other person, by taking time to listen and asking curious (non-judgmental) questions, we can better understand why the other person feels the way she does and then enjoy a meaningful, respectful dialogue.
I highly recommend this book to parents who want to raise skilled communicators and to anyone wishing to enhance their communication IQ.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2017I was really excited to read this book and explore the subject and power of curiosity. To read about examples of encouraging it and using it to be inspired but alas after forcing my way through about 1/3 of the book I couldn't take it anymore. This reads like some monotone mandatory HR lecture taught by someone who tells us extremely simplistic things in really uninspired and boring examples. Sorry, I give it one star.
