While you can build effective low-tech traps with materials you’d find in the wilderness, in some situations it just makes sense to use more modern options, such as cable snares, leghold traps, and body-grip traps to improve your odds of success. Choose from the following trap types, based on your needs and the animals in your area.
SNARES You can build primitive snares with materials gathered on-site, even weaving your own string out of bark fibers—but many animals will be able to chew through string. Cable snares made from braided steel cable are more secure.
FOOTHOLD TRAPS Common foothold traps are clamping jaws that grab an animal when it steps on the trigger. They do not kill the prey outright; the trapped animal is usually shot by the trapper.
BODY GRIP TRAPS Two heavy springs move the trap bars together, snapping the animal’s neck, breaking its back, or strangling it. They can be treacherous to set.
LIVE CATCH TRAPS The typical cage trap is a live-catch trap. This forgiving trap allows you to release animals that you didn’t intend to catch and is ideal for urban, suburban, or farm settings.

About the author

Thanks for checking out my author biography! My name is Tim MacWelch and I am the author of numerous books on outdoor survival and self-reliance, including three New York Times Bestselling titles (Prepare for Anything, Hunting & Gathering Survival Manual and How To Survive Anything). I'm from Virginia, USA and I have been an active practitioner of survival and outdoor skills for over three decades. My love of the outdoors started at a young age, growing up on a farm in the rolling hills of Virginia. I became interested in survival skills and bushcraft as an offshoot of backpacking as a teen—while out in remote areas, it seemed like a smart plan to learn some skills. The majority of my training over the years has involved testing survival skills and devising new ones, but my biggest leaps forward came from my experience as a teacher.
I began teaching children in 1995, spending hundreds of hours volunteering, and eventually founded my own year-round survival school in 1997. Since then, I have worked with Boy Scouts, youth groups, summer camps, and adults in all walks of life, as well as providing outdoor skills training for numerous personnel in law enforcement, search and rescue organizations, all branches of the United States Armed Forces, the State Department, and the Department of Justice and some of its agencies. I have been a featured expert for CNN, Good Morning America and several National Geographic programs, and featured in many publications including Conde Nast Traveler, the Washington Post, and American Survival Guide.
Since late 2010, I have written hundreds of pieces for Outdoor Life Magazine and many other publications. My current and past articles and galleries can be found at www.outdoorlife.com and you can learn more about my survival school at www.advancedsurvivaltraining.com.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2022I ordered this book just the other day and haven’t read all of it as of yet, but what I have read has helped me further my knowledge of surviving off of the land. I have lived in the country all of my life, with a dad that hunted every type of game. Living off the land is something my family has done for generations. As my fathers only child, and of course being a woman, I did not pay enough attention when it came to hunting. This book is a great way to learn anything you needed to know about how to survive off the grid, off the land, when you’re in an emergency in the wild, etc. I have 4 children. 2 teens and 2 tweens. They have also took interest in this book as well. I feel it is very important to teach our children these type of skills given the current world we are all having to live in. Times are dangerous, unpredictable, and they are crazy. It’s best to have this knowledge and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Just my personal opinion. My book did however arrive with the top corner damaged, but it wasn’t necessarily a big deal. I still give it 5 stars! Enjoy 😊

- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2020This book covers a ton of topics, it's more detailed than I expected and I'm very impressed. I highly recommend it, especially since its not that expensive to begin with.
I bought this book because of my writing more so than for actually surviving outdoors. Many survival books start with the type of equipment to use and never talk about they resources you can find in nature to accommodate, this one accommodates with what you can find in nature. Which is good for many reasons; among them, my story is pre-industrial revolution and modern conveniences simply don't exist as of yet.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2024Bought this for my grandson and it was delivered with no damage and its content he really has enjoyed.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2019I read some of the same ideas in the really good books because the tried and true processes and knowledge is.... well .... known by many and used in their books. This book had great information and is written well enough to be captivating and useful enough you'll want the e-book version in case you want to load them on the micro SD cards for your old re-purposed phones just for loading books and maps on for field use. I load these good books on two old smart phones that are no longer activated and an old tablet external storage card. Then when the time comes you need the information, you don't have to have memorized the books/maps.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2024I haven't had a chance to look at it
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2021If you want to have lots of usable survival information in one book, this is a good one. It would be a good first book for a survival library. Plenty of pictures and well organized.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2020I just received this book.. (pre-ordered), And I'm GLAD I did!! This is the MOST complete book on survival that I've seen in a LONG time. It would be easier to tell you what it doesn't have in it... a MUST have book! 5 Stars aren't enough for this book. I'll buy a couple more for family and friends.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2016Nothing new. Just a semi good read. It won't save your life. Don't get me wrong, the information is solid, just not the book to get you through a survival situation.
Great coffee table book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well illustrated and an excellent reference material on hunting and survival methods.
This book is very well illustrated, well written and demonstrates the vast wealth of knowledge about hunting and bushcraft by the author. Very easy reading and informative. I went through this book in a few days but the knowledge that I have gained will be with me for some time. Its nice to have a book that is both entertaining and an excellent reference. I also purchased the Ultimate Bushcraft Survival manual which is a perfect companion to this one.
