Lou Gehrig: Pride of the Yankees Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 69 ratings

A touching tribute to one of the greatest ballplayers of all time

For seventeen seasons, Lou Gehrig was the heart and soul of the New York Yankees. The power-hitting first baseman donned the pinstripes for 2,130 consecutive games, a streak that earned him the nickname “the Iron Horse” and went unbroken for more than five decades. World Series champion, All-Star, American League Most Valuable Player, Triple Crown winner—the list of Gehrig’s on-field achievements is spectacular. But he is best remembered for the grace and the strength with which he faced an insurmountable challenge off the field: the disease that ended his career and which now bears his name.

When he retired on April 30, 1939, Lou Gehrig called himself “the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” His words continue to resonate more than seventy-five years after they were spoken. In this heartfelt biography, which was the basis for the Academy Award–winning film
The Pride of the Yankees, starring Gary Cooper, legendary sportswriter Paul Gallico tells the story of how a son of German immigrants rose to the pinnacle of greatness in America’s pastime and inspired the nation as no other athlete ever has.

This is the first book I’ve read about Lou Gehrig. It is so well written, and tells his story so touchingly. We need him to come back. Our kids need heroes like Lou Gehrig now! We ALL need heroes like him now!

In the world today, it is hard to find people who constantly try to fake who they really are. This book shows a honest humble man who had everything and had it taken away through no fault of his own. Keeping that in my mind as I read this made the book even more amazing.

I first read this book in the fifth grade in 1948. I also saw the movie about the same time. I have thought about both over these many years. Recently I hoped I could read it again and was pleased to find that I could purchase it with Amazon Prime. (Top BA) I was even more pleased to get it delivered in short order (Most HRs). Then I was most pleased to find it in good physical condition (Most RBIs). I read it in two days and enjoyed every minute of it. Can't wait to read it to my great grandchildren.

Just finished this on a layover to New York City. My husband and I are visiting for the first time. We will be attending a Yankees game on Friday. Gehrig has been my favorite player for many years. Paul's book reiterates why. God bless the athlete, man, and hero who was Lou Gehrig.

The book was fine, but it was more like a few short stories than a full book. I did not realize that in advance or I probably would not have purchased it. Still, though short and without anything new, it was enjoyable.

I have ordered these books several times before but, this was the first time from this seller. It arrived promptly and I was so excited to discover it had a dust jacket in really good condition. I didn't know the dust jacket was on the book until it arrived. My uncle, Bill Dickey, wrote the forward so I have bought the books for my grandsons. I will definitely buy from this seller again.

The book should really be rated a 3 star, but I rated it a 4 star as I read it as a child and Gehrig became one of my childhood heroes as a result. He is the type of athlete young boys need as heroes, not flashy, not a show off, just a good solid MAN.

A wonderful story of Gehrig' s life, The disease is known as Lou Gehrig' s Disease in stead of the medical name.

Absolutely wonderful. This was the only book by Paul Gallico that my Sister did not have. It was her Christmas present and she loved it. Thankyou so much.
