The emphasis throughout is on understanding their original purpose and on revealing how relevant they are for researchers today. Compelling insights into individual lives and communities in the past can be gleaned from them, and they are especially useful when they are combined with other major sources, such as the census.Your Ancestors' Parish Records is an excellent introduction to this key area of family and local history research it is a book that all family and local historians should have on their shelf.

As a genealogy enthusiast who had previously taken a course about English Parish Records, I did not believe this book would have much to offer me. How wrong I was! This is an extremely thorough, well written book that goes into great depth re the history of what records were maintained by the respective parishes as well as when and why and where these records might be found today. To provide this information, the author supplies a good deal of the history surrounding both the specific documents and the country in general, along with some humorous anecdotes.

Not only was this an interesting read, this book will remain as a cornerstone in my genealogy reference library.

I had thought this book would be a good reference for helping me trace my ancestors from Britain, but I had not expected to enjoy reading it, as well. Stuart Raymond writes in such an interesting manor with such great information about the history of Parishes and their functions and division of labor that I found myself reading it for pleasure! Of course we know to look at Parish records for births, marriages, deaths, but I had no idea that for centuries tithes were compulsory and the church kept records for the local governing body, of which it was a major part. So the many records we can research are discussed in detail in this book and this knowledge helps immensely in knowing where and how to look. It is a very helpful and interesting book and so well researched and written. I highly recommend it, even if you are not interested in looking into your family records!

Have bought quite a lot of these books to help me with my family history. The parish records book is very interesting and couldn't put it down.
It makes you realise that you can get into a bit of a rut with research and the book makes you think of things in a different way. Would definitely recommend this book if you are just starting out with family tree research. Very pleased.
