Review

A selection of comments from Amazon reviewers:

"This is the first book by J. T. Williams I have read and I am hooked! I discovered him via a giveaway and dove inside the covers with no idea about the story. I MUST READ THE ENTIRE SERIES! I experienced the same thrill, awe, and wonder when I read The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien many decades ago. So much entwined and little clues here and there with twists you will miss if you don't read carefully. I am definitely buying the series!"

"I loved everything about this very different story. The author was excellent at describing the scenes, so much so, you could almost feel the cold in the air, hear the battle around you. There was lots of action, great character interplay, and an intriguing plot that kept me guessing!"

"Wow! What a book! Not only is that a great boom for JT's first but it is a great boom period! I have read all his newer stuff but I have to say this is one of my favorites and I had a hard time putting it down. The setting and world he had created is simply awesome and unique but familiar at the same time! Then he fills the world with awesome characters and a plot that keeps you guessing all adds together for a great read! I highly recommend this!!!"

"I can honestly say all of the books that I've read by J.T. Williams have all been amazing. When one books ends I cant help but want to read the next. This story has a great plot and it play out where you never wanna stop reading."

This is the first book by J. T. Williams I have read and I am hooked! I discovered him via a giveaway and dove inside the covers with no idea about the story. I MUST READ THE ENTIRE SERIES! My husband asked what the story was about as my face distorted into many facets. I LOVE the details, the characters, scenery and different races throughout the story. I experienced the same thrill, awe and wonder when I read The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien many decades ago. So much entwined and little clues here and there with twists you will miss if you don't read carefully. I am definitely buying the series!

This story is not at all as it seem. With twists and turns and maybe redemption toward a true path to a new life and a greater adventure. This is just one part of an epic saga to test time itself. I highly recommend this book and will read the next book in the series soon. Can't wait to see where this story will lead us all. I will be reading more of J.T. Williams epic crafted stories over the years to come. Bye for now.

Took about 5 pages to really get into it but afterwards, I found myself reading 3 or 5 charters before bed instead of one. Looking forward to more of the author's writings.

Rogues of Magic offers another solid tale of the Dwemhar. Led by Sviska, an assassin turned hero, the very remnants of magic must be protected from the Order. Chaos, destruction, death, and slim hope sweep across the frozen north of this story’s palette. Entertaining and engaging. Looking forward to the next book in this series!

I really liked the cloak and dagger at the front of this book. Just when you think you are starting to get a better idea about what is happening you get taken on a trip of magic! This becomes a real page turner.

It was a little boring at first but then it gets rushed towards the end... Meh

5.0 out of 5 stars There is evil here, but it is difficult to tell where and from whom it comes.

An assassination gone wrong, or had it?? The target a young girl, which when the assassin perceived that this was the target, he realized he no longer had the heart to carry on doing the work of the Order. Strangely, he almost immediately received a job, sending him North, acting as a winemaker. He had learnt the art of winemaking at an early age, so yes he was qualified for this assignment. However, all was not as he originally thought, as magic still was used in the Township of the North, magic which was being killed out by the Order, which he owed allegiance to.
Yes, the story evolves, having tie ups with the Half-elf Chronicles. The world is being assaulted by dark forces and those with magic are all that s5and in the way. A story well crafte, I look forward to reading more of this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Original and enjoyable telling of an Assassin's mission
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 24, 2015
I read 'Winemaker' on the back of J.T.s horror anthology, 'Raven's Requiem' which a mutual friend tipped me off about and I as I like medieval mercenary stories having wrote one myself this was right up my street.

Loved the feel of the story, you could almost feel the cold of Elinathrond. Good interplay between the characters, in particular a genuine friendship Sviska (undercover as Turmin) and the Slats the dwarf, Berie, and Lord Brethor. The whole world of the Order, the Kells, the Priory works well and is cleverly thought out, makes sense and the whole wine 'macguffin' was intriguing. There's a BIG battle later and it is written very well and conveys the action clearly.

Downsides; Personally, I would have liked more physical description of the protagonists and I think the text could benefit from another proof as there is a couple of typos but that said, they don't get in the way and its cracking book that kept you guessing which direction the plot would advance. There is a tiny subplot with Mermaids that I didn't get and felt out of place to me, but loved everything else.

A confident debut novel and I'm happy recommend it to any fan of dark fantasy genre. Looking forward to reading Book 2 now...

3.0 out of 5 stars Very full, chaotic and busy but derivative.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 3, 2017
This is lively and full of imagery. Maybe a little too full - it's quite a chaotic book. While there is definitely a plot, events follow each other thick and fast and it get quite hard to keep up as magic doors, magical beings, dark monsters, unlikely plots and twists and various orders and races come and go.
I enjoyed a lot of the imagery but I felt that the author had collected a biggish cast from reading Tolkien and other fantasy and splashed them all over this book with lots of enthusiasm but not much self control. The language was occasionally surprising too - I was struck particularly by phrases such as 'an unnatural heat emulated off the fire'. Like the characters, I felt that the author had collected a lot of words and loves them but hasn't quite had time, in the excitement of writing, to work out if they actually mean anything in the context.
The author's excitement comes over very clearly but the book doesn't live up to it. He (she?) loves this fantasy stuff but hasn't got anything original to add. On the other hand, it's a remarkable spilling out of all the fantasy plots and characters and types and tropes that you've ever come across. Just, they've all been done before.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good debut effort
Reviewed in Canada on March 21, 2017
I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it.

Winemaker of the North is the first book in the Saints of Wura trilogy. The story is interesting although predictable at times. I really liked Sviska – a well fleshed out character. However, the writing could have been tightened. There were quite a few awkward sentences and the use of “began” in a strange manner did bother me – at least, it was strange to me but it could be because English isn’t my mother tongue. Those “flaws” spoiled the reading experience a bit but not enough to make me stop reading. I think it’s a good debut effort. I’m giving it 3,5 stars.

A deftly woven fantasy, the world building is remarkably good, the characters are multi-faceted and interesting and there is a current of mystery underpinning the whole narration.

Pacing is excellent, no dragging, excess of descriptions or tedious filler. This was a vastly improved quality of story-telling when compared to the first book of the The Half-elf Chronicles, which I actually also rather enjoyed!

Will definitely be following the surviving characters as I'm rather invested in them and want to know just what battles they will have to face next. The enigmatic Sviska is definitely one to watch!
