In international bestselling author Campbell Armstrong’s thrilling, sophisticated tale of espionage, an assassin’s vengeance triggers the exposure of a lethal conspiracy at the heart of the US government

The director of the CIA lies unconscious and close to death in a private clinic, and his likely successor waits on his Pennsylvania estate while the power brokers in Washington, DC, do their deals. In the meantime, a man in Dallas is murdered. And on the other side of the globe, in Manila, a nondescript American is killed in his lover’s back-alley apartment.

Hard-drinking Scotsman Charlie Galloway, who has been suspended from his job in the LAPD, unofficially looks into the murder of a Filipino woman. Step by step, his investigation leads him to the nation’s capital, where a shocking conspiracy reaches deep into the heart of government.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A darkened street is "razored by flashing lights" and a killer has learned the "delicate beauty of patience" in this handsomely crafted espionage tale, likely to be another winner for the bestselling Armstrong ( Mambo ; Jig ). When Charlie Galloway, a transplanted Scotsman recently suspended from the LAPD, discovers the brutally murdered body of his Filipino housekeeper, he stumbles onto a conspiracy that reaches into the highest levels of U.S. government. In 1985, in Benguet province, the Philippines, several people suspected of anti-Marcos activities were massacred in a deserted field, with the connivance of the CIA. Now, five years later, an assassin has come to the U.S. to avenge those deaths. William Laforge, one of the operatives present that night, now stands for appointment to head the CIA; Byron Truskett, his chief Senate backer and himself a presidential aspirant, needs a squeaky-clean nominee. To what lengths will these men go to protect themselves and their ambitions? And can Galloway, a self-described Lone Ranger with a fierce thirst for whiskey and a marriage on the rocks, possibly help his adopted country and save himself at the same time? Readers will stay riveted.

I thought I would enjoy this book. Just another thriller. Politics. High government intrigue. An assassin. The usual. But this book wasn't that. It had hard rhetorical questions. Ones it will not answer. It cannot answer them anymore than you, the reader, can. The questions are deep and disturbing. The author has unusual insight. I described this book to a family member as a rapid page-turning thriller with dark philosophical overtones. If I taught political science at a university, it would be required reading. It calls into question what you think you know. It is a painful book if the questions burrow in. It will haunt me for a long time. But...if you appreciate deep thinking and you aren't offended by things being questioned, l cannot recommend this book enough.

A good thriller written by an author who doesn't think much of America . That's okay but stating that the Constitution was outdated is a bit over the top for me. About a third of the book was about the main character's alcohol addiction making him totally unlikable. However, the story is an entertaining story and I highly recommend the book, Campbell never disappoints me.

I enjoyed the multiple threads that were used to move the book along and keep it interesting without, giving away the plot. This is the first book by Campbell Armstrong that I have read and it will not be the last.

Agents Of Darkness is the type of novel designed to hold the reader curious and involved page after page. Well-written and surprisingly world-conscious, the espionage-oriented book takes the reader from the Far East to California and on to Pennsylvania where the book's finale takes place.
Main character Galloway is instantly believable and his predicament alarmingly real. He is down, but not out and beckons the reader to feel for him as he battles himself, his life and a nemesis given birth by his country.
With a surprisingly unfair ending, Agents Of Darkness may disappoint some. Having said that, the book lives up to its path of bloodshed and evil.
