"Isabella Fontaine and Ken Brosky's incredible talent for storytelling takes the reader on an amazing action-packed ride fueled by endless creativity and limitless imagination. TGC is like a high-stakes version of Harold and the Purple Crayon meets a contemporary, above ground Alice in Wonderland."
- Book Fetish Blog

Once upon a time, a pair of brothers used magic to bring their fairy tales to life.

Now they’re everywhere, hiding in plain sight. A dwarf running a company that brainwashes clients. A wicked stepmother operating a twisted orphanage where nothing is as it seems. A magic fish who grants wishes … at a cost.

And a prince whose nightly hunger must be satisfied with blood.

The nightmares haunt 18-year-old Alice Goodenough. Every night, she sees the creatures unleashed by the Brothers Grimm. Every day, she hunts them down. Armed only with a magic pen and a trusty sidekick named Br’er Rabbit, Alice must use all her wits to vanquish the evil. Her wits … and a very sharp sword.

But there are no guarantees. No second chances. With each new creature she vanquishes, Alice’s nightmares grow more horrific. The Corruption is spreading. She will either vanquish the malevolent evil for good, or she’ll die.

And Alice is not the first to wield the magic pen. Will she succeed or will evil kill her first?

"Original.  Creative.  Exciting.  Smart.  Fontaine and Brosky weave a brilliant modern day fairy tale focused on taking the old ones down."

"A major plus about these stories is that Alice is a smart, strong, and resilient protagonist who does not just extract herself from sticky situations through sheer brute force, but by also using her brain. I think it was a rollicking good read, which drew me in and kept my interest until the end of the book. I am looking forward to following Alice through the rest of her story in the chronicles to come."

"Alice was a great protagonist and I found myself getting very attached to her. She was strong and independent and a serious kick-ass kind of girl!"

"I highly recommend these lovely and inspiring stories."

I received my MFA in fiction writing from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. I've had over a dozen short stories published, but my main focus now is Young Adult books. My previous series, The Grimm Chronicles, is an award-winning (really!) fantasy adventure series about a hero who must vanquish the monsters of Grimm's Fairy Tales.

My newest series is The Earth-X Chronicles, a YA sci-fi adventure that spans time and space. Alien ghosts, backstabbing clans, and mysterious keepers of knowledge all conspire to make this an entertaining series! I'm so excited about it that I just swallowed my gum!

This book was a huge surprise. I picked up the anthology for a dollar. Some elements that kept me coming back to read the whole (long story). The action. The detail (I feel I know fencing a lot more now). The perspectival writing - each chapter was written from varying perspectives and each was true to the character (style, humour etc) and was not disruptive. The geography and history really drew me in and had enough details to keep it interesting. The bad guys really were bad and there was a convincing sense of peril throughout. The offset of the hero-ing with ordinary school life - the angst and politics. It kept it interesting. The lack of typos. The back story was excellent with the diary entries anchoring you in the past. I know I said that the bad guys were bad. But I also love that there were moral shades of grey... Good in the bad and bad in the good. No one was perfect and no one was unredeemable. That was true to life. Couple of things I could've done without: the repeated spelling of "Gawd" . All I could hear was the voice of a cockney East end Londoner. But I know the authors were going for an American teen voice. Nothing else was "pronounced" in the book. Not sure why this one word was. Also the use of "anywho" was often untrue for the period represented. That was distracting. But those are two minor quibbles. It was an engaging and entertaining read. I thought I'd hate the man sized rabbit. I loved him. These authors did over and over again what is a very difficult trick to pull off once... They made the totally outlandish and unbelievable, believable. I cared for the characters which is important. The role concept of corruption was genius. The addition of the fairy tales at the back in appendix form was a great idea. Just an excellent read through and through.

First off, this book is HUGE. It's actually a whole bunch of mini-books compiled together. I was expecting them to be more like short stories, but they're each actually quite long.

The main hero, Alice, is what I'd consider a typical teen. She's not super shy, super popular, or super wild. She has a job working at her local library, but she also goes to parties with friends. She's good in school, but it's not her number one focus. She has a boyfriend, but her life doesn't revolve around him.

The stories are very well written, too. They're engaging, and each one is a different story. I wouldn't stay they're the kind of story that you want to sit up and read all in one night, but they'll keep you coming back.

This is one of the most enjoyable books I've read in quite a while. For days after I finished it, I would pick up my Kindle to read and be disappointed that I had reached the end and that there was no more. For me, that's an indicator of good entertainment. The twists on the original Grimms' Fairy Tales is fun and no, you won't be lost if you haven't read them. It just adds an interesting dimension to the reading if you have. Our hero is a young woman who is strong and capable. Her friends are respectable folks. There is not a great deal of teenage angst. Generally, these young people actually have their heads on straight! How refreshing. It's a long story but the friendships are solid and the goals clear and understandable. It makes very good linear sense. I highly recommend it.

Loved first half of book, it was a definite 5 star but story just got too long and convoluted...1300+ pages, really?!
Good job giving life to characters. Fun seeing some of my old favs from the fairy tales.

These books were quite enjoyable. I listen to the stories as I'm doing chores. I really enjoyed them even though I'm many years past being a young adult. I bet young adults would really enjoy reading these books.

Think something like Buffy the vampire slayer meets Alice in wonderland (allusion by the protagonist's name and her rabbit friend). Or a bit reminiscent of the Dresden files. Apart from Alice being just an ordinary teen, maybe a bit odd to her peers, but without magical abilities. She has yet to develop stamina and is always in mortal danger. As were other heroes before her.
Quite entertaining. I didn't like when different voices blended, like when both Alice and Briar used the same vocabulary (Anyhow and Yours truly). This can easily be remedied by a new edition, though, so I still give the compilation 5 stars.
I recommend this book to YA readers and to some adults who like fairy tales and happy endings. It may be even suitable for middle graders (with a warning that there is fighting, some deaths and the protagonists act more like adults than teens).

I enjoyed how different this was from the original Grimm's Fairy Tales. Answering the question of where the characters went after their story was finished. It brought such a unique dimension to each character. I enjoyed the complexity of the story.

As it turns out this is a very long series of stories alternating between characters. The book is well written and detailed just enough to be clear without being elementary. I like the Hero, she is old enough to have an idea of what is required while still having high school worries on her mind. There have been a few slow points or areas that could be improved, but it has held my attention through the entire book, I have read it every day on my train commute and have enjoyed each chapter. It would help to know some of the Grimm stories, but it is not required at all.

Corruption within fairy tales leads to a hero who has to defeat evil.
With the help of Brer Rabbit and her friends Alice becomes that hero.
A wonderful book, full of strange creatures and enthralling battles. Tales within tales lead to an epic battle and the loss of a trusted friend.
I totally recommend this book.

I loved the characters and the premise of the story. I am a fan of the girl hero who doesn't require a man to be fulfilled and is the one saving the world. It is good for young girls to read. Princesses are not all helpless!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read most of the way through.

Overall, this was a good read. In a market full a "low-confidence teenage girl learns to be so much more" stories, this has some very interesting twists to keep it fresh and entertaining. My only real criticism was the last leg of the story. It had a very different feel than the rest of the book, and seemed a bit rushed in the homestretch. Overall though, I would definitely recommend giving this a read.
