The Rock (The Highland Guard Book 11) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 794 ratings

From a New York Times bestseller, “star-crossed lovers defy society and tradition in this action-filled, fierce [medieval] romance” (Library Journal).

The first time he caught sight of Elizabeth Douglas, Thomas MacGowan thought she was a princess. To the son of the castle blacksmith, the daughter of the powerful Lord of Douglas might as well be. When it becomes clear that his childhood companion will never see him as a man she could love, Thom joins Edward Bruce’s army as a man-at-arms to try to change his lot. If he’s harbored a secret hope that he could close the gap between them, he faces the cold, hard truth when Elizabeth comes to him for help. She might need the boy who used to climb cliffs to rescue her brother from the hands of the English, but she would never see the son of a smith as a man worthy of her hand.

But what to make then, of the simmering attraction between them?

“A well-crafted series.” —

About the Author

Monica McCarty is the bestselling author of the Highland Guard series, the MacLeods of Skye trilogy, and the Campbell trilogy. Her interest in the Scottish clan system began in the most unlikely of places: a comparative legal history course at Stanford Law School. After realizing that her career as a lawyer and her husband’s transitory life as a professional baseball player were not exactly a match made in heaven, she traded in her legal briefs for Scottish historical romances with sexy alpha heroes. Monica McCarty lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and their two children.

We are getting closer to the end, it just fantastic to mix history with fiction, Ella is able to conquer her fears, Thom was able to accomplish his goal, but being together is the best price, the love and passion they share is beautiful, lest see what happens in the next book

I have the entire series so far. I love Monica McCarty. She is one of the best writers, as far as I'm concerned. Very interesting books and she does her homework on the history involved in this set of books. I bought this set on Amazon because this seller had new books, which is what I wanted since my other books were new as well. I haven't read all of them yet. I've had a very traumatic situation in my life recently, and I haven't been able to recover from it. Let me just say that I am heartbroken. I do plan to read all of the books in this series, though. Great seller and fast shipping!

A sort of Wuthering Heights Heathcliff and Catherine plot about Thom the handsome, muscular son of a blacksmith, a champion rock climber who climbs castle walls to visit Elizabeth, the beautiful blond princess-like daughter of the castle. The two were friends as children. The dialogue is often anachronistic but I sort of accepted it as a translation of what really been said. The novel is part of a series with references to past stories (a bit irritating--I hadn't read them) and it went on too long with Elizabeth thinking she should marry a highborn handsome aristocrat she didn’t love, the requisite sex scenes with Thom whom she really does love, contrived repeated meetings with him etc.. But it is overall a satisfying example of the medieval romance genre.

This one has to be the best story among the Highland series, romance-wise. Thom is not your regular hero, all awesome, invincible fighting machine that the rest of the Guard already is. He has to fight, work and sweat his way up. That he is not of noble blood, or even a chieftain or a heir, only adds to his appeal and his journey. Neither does he take one look at the heroine, forget all his duties and fall in lust. He doesn't even jeopardize any mission because he cannot control his lust for the heroine. Rather, he loves her, and never confuses his feelings for her with only lust. Which makes him truly awesome in my estimation. Elizabeth is also different. She is not willful and annoying like Bella or Cate, nor a self sufficient, independent woman like Juliet. In fact, the hardships that she has seen as a child and which have shaken the foundations of her sense of security reminded me a bit of Scarlett o'Hara. Scarlett never wanted to be hungry again, and Elizabeth doesn't ever want to be poor or destitute again. This fact explains why she accepts Randolph over Thom. McCarty shows a lot of maturity in her writing in this one as she handles their romance. Thom has always been in love with her, she loves him as her best friend. She is shocked when she discovers his feelings for her, and is truly upset that she has lost his friendship. The difference between loving someone and being in love with them has been handled beautifully by McCarty. And then the way Thom ignites feelings inside her is both sensuous and hot. It's difficult to imagine what a difference in class meant at that point in time, but it was there, and it was very rigid. Which also explains why inspite of loving Thom all her life, Ella never considered him as her love interest. Her practical nature and insecurities collide with her feelings for Thom, and she is caught in the middle. It's not until she is betrothed to another man that she realizes she has made a mistake, and it's not until Thom's life is in danger that she finds the strength to rebel against her family and the rigid society. The only scene I didn't like was the seduction one, which just didn't gel with the rest of the story and seemed forced. One minute Thom was refusing her totally, and the next he turns back! It would've made more sense had he walked out then and returned later, or had Ella chasing him for a change. But otherwise, a beautiful story, and quite different from the rest in the series. Five stars.

The Rock was one of those books you just could not stop reading. I just couldn't put it down. That's the main reason its getting 5 stars instead of 4. I must admit I didn't like the heroine all that much. Lady Elisabeth came across at times as selfish and self center. Her behavior was not consistent with her age of 23 or 24. She was immature and would have been a better character if she was around 18 or 19. But I have loved Thommy from the first time we meet him in book 8.5 The Knight novella.

This is a story of Classes of people. Thommy is the son of a Blacksmith and Elizabeth is the sister to a very powerful Earl and Knight. He is very close to King Robert the Bruce. The backdrop of the story is still the same. The Bruce and his Commanders and Highland Guard are fighting the war with King Edward for Scotland's independence. All of the Hot Sexy Highland Guards and there beautiful wives are present in the story. I just love the Highland Guard and all the legend and mystery surrounding them. I really like all the Historical work Ms. Mcarty has put in her stories and how the characters are actually based on people an events during this Historical Period.

The story has a very good ending and epilog. I just wanted all Thommy's dreams to be realized earlier in the story, instead it was at the very end. But Thommy does get his HEA and his childhood sweetheart Elizabeth/Ella. I Highly Recommend the Highland Guard series. All the stories are extremely well written. The romances are Hot and sensuous. The action is fast paced. Now I have to wait until May 2016 to read the final instalment in the series The Ghost

I loved this story and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen. The wars between England and Scotland are great for excellent stories as this one was.

I love and follow the highland guard books since reading The Chief. I loved most of the books but two books in the series felt not as great as the rest. The first one was Boyd's story and this book. It is still a very good book but Ella as a character was quite annoying. Her surprise at Thom declaration and how she behaves throughout the book made me want to shake her. But I did fall in love a bit with Thom... Smith son or not :) I still very much recommend any book by Monica McCarty and can't believe the series is about to be over...

I've been a long-time fan of Monica McCarty's books (having read 12 to date). I'll probably review each of them individually at some point, but I HAD TO write a few words for Thom and Elizabeth's story, as I nearly skipped it having read some of the earlier reviews (much to my shame).
Monica puts a lot of effort into her research, and it shows - the history is always as enthralling as the story she spins into it itself, and it's what makes her books so, so charming. That being said, not everything would 'work' if she stayed 100% true to the history (as she always explains at the end of each book of this series, in great detail). So when other reviewers note that Thom and Elizabeth's story would have been unlikely if not impossible - well yes, but Monica points that out herself at the end of the book, when she covers the history it is based on in the epilogue.
That being said, this is probably my favourite of the series after Hawk's story (who doesn't love Hawk??) and Elizabeth comes across as a very well thought out character with just the right mix of historical accuracy (so - without wanting to give too much away - she knew that marrying beneath her would be difficult) and modern.. wildness? I don't think she comes across as overly young at all, I just find her charming. And Thom is.. well Thom is just lovely, and definitely one of my favourite guardsmen. Also, why shouldn't there be a new recruit nearing the end of the series?
I'll put my rant aside (I just love her books and thought some of the lesser reviews were severely unjustified), and just tell you to buy this one, especially if you loved the other books in this series, and especially if you loved Hawk's and Saint's stories. It's very good indeed, and I'm almost sad I finished it so quickly.
