Mystic Dreamers Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 140 ratings

In the tradition of the historical fiction of Kathleen O'Neal Gear and W. Michael Gear, USA Today bestselling author Roseanne Bittner tells a story of Native America sure to capture you and carry you on an adventure of love and hate, good and evil, life and death in Mystic Dancers, first in a series.

In 1833, Star Dancer, a Sichangu (Brulé Sioux), is promised in marriage to Stalking Wolf, an Oglala warrior whom she has never met. What begins as a loveless union develops into a moving story of a man and a woman led by powers beyond their control. Dreams, visions, and mystic experiences fill this provocative love story that launches a saga about the Lakota and their first meeting with the White Man.

Welcome! I'm glad to be in touch with you, especially if you love American history and America's Old West of the 1800's. I hope you enjoy stories about that time period, as well as Native American stories. It's what I love to write and currently I've had 72 novels published over the past 38 years. I am still writing and won't stop until the Good Lord requires it.

I grew up on westerns when they dominated television - shows like The Big Valley, Cheyenne, Wagon Train, Rawhide, Bonanza, Have Gun/Will Travel, The Rifleman, Wanted - Dead or Alive, and of course the famous Gunsmoke, which I still watch today. My all-time favorite western movies are The Guns of Josie Wales, Pale Rider and Hang 'Em High (all starring Clint Eastwood) - The Searchers, Rooster Cogburn and The Shootist (John Wayne) - and Quigley Down Under and Monty Walsh starring Tom Seleck. I also loved the Louis L'Amour westerns, which usually starred Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot. When I watched How The West Was Won at the tender age of 18, I knew that some day I would write stories about that wild time period of America's history. Books that deeply impressed me are A Lantern In Her Hand by Bess Streeter Aldrich, and The Proud Breed, by Celeste de Blasis.

No other nation has exploded in exploration and settlement like America, and to this day our Native Americans still suffer culture shock. When I read Dee Brown's Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, I knew I also had to tell stories of America's growth through the eyes of the Native Americans, as my own maternal great-grandmother was Potowatomi. Another writer who vividly depicts the truthful early history of our country is Alan Eckert, in books like That Dark and Bloody River.

Throughout the exciting history and adventure in my stories I always strive to also tell an abiding love story between two people whose love holds them together through the trials and tribulations of settling America's frontiers. It took grit and bravery to head into rugged, unknown territory, knowing you will leave family behind whom you will probably never see again. Free land, gold and a better life were strong temptations for men, as well as for many brave-hearted women, some of whom settled the West on their own under the Homestead Act. Such a woman is depicted in my own novel, Montana Woman.

I have lived in Michigan my whole life, but I truly believe I have a past spirit who lives or lived in the Old West. My husband and I have traveled the West for 40 years, and I have visited just about every place mentioned in my books.

For a list of all my books and how you can one-click order many of them, watch my web site at www.rosannebittner.com, and my blog site at www.rosannebittner.blogspot.com, and look me up on Facebook for news about any new books coming, and about many of my past titles that have been reissued in print and as e-books! I have been so touched by this story! I felt like I was right there. I even knew without a doubt what the visions of both Rising Eagle and his wife had each time, even as she was Star Dancer.
My name is Starr! I absolutely love Indian stories, especially the historical ones. I think I've said it before but my husband is part Cherokee (and looks like an Indian). I love him deeply and am proud to be his wife and friend! I am a very white paleface on the outside but inside I feel Indian. Thank you for this story. On on to the next Mystic book.

I love almost all the books by Rosanne Bittner; some are more action-packed than others. The "Mystic" series was a rather "calm" series -- wouldn't keep you up at night; but a nice story about a Native American couple living out their destiny, trying to keep "American Indian land" under their control for as long as possible, even though they realized the White Man's world was taking over eventually.

Her books take you right there. You see the scenery, you can hear the sounds, you get involved in the lives of these characters. They are not just "books" she writes, they are masterpieces! I feel like a part of me is kind of lost when I'm done with a book. No other auther grips the heart and soul the way she does.

I had read this book as a young teen(overachiever). Imagine when I found it as an adult. So excited.

Rosanne Bittner is one of my favorites so it wasn't hard to jump right in and start reading. This I consider a good start to a trilogy that follows with two more books. I thought it interesting that elements of Magical Realism, more often found in Latin American literature, were found in this novel. It actually surprised me..........though it was appropriate and added so much to the novel. Without it, the novel would really be just like any other American Indian story. Good Read.

Loved this book as well as I do all of Rosanne's books. I love hearing tales of Indians before the white man invaded their territory and took it all away. These people are a loving, human people who didn't deserve what was done to them and Rosanne makes her characters come alive and history worth reading about.

This is a great series and makes you wonder who the savages really were, the white men are still taking and abusing. You cry with them and I did cry a lot at how we butchered them. This series is awesome and well worth the read.
