Good story.

After a monumental plumbing issue at Elaine's house, Myrtle graciously says that she'll host the month's Bunco game. With plenty of wine, the night begins with ten other women having fun before the game even starts, with Puddin and Miles subbing for two of the regular women. Things change drastically when a member of the Bunco game ends up dead in Myrtle's backyard. Myrtle discovers her dead, beaten over the head with a wrench left behind by her hapless yardman, Dusty.

What follows is another mystery that Myrtle is determined to solve before her police chief son. With her usual tact (or lack thereof), Myrtle begins the task of talking with each of the suspects. But things take a turn for the worse when Miles comes down with a vicious stomach virus and is taken out of the investigation early. And when another body turns up that appears to be linked with the first, the killer becomes even more dangerous. As Myrtle gets closer to the answer, she becomes more aware of the danger. Is this Myrtle's last case, or can she solve it before she's added to the body count?

This mystery is another fun addition to the Myrtle Clover Mystery Series. With familiar old characters as well as several new ones, this book expands what we know of the small town of Bradley, North Carolina and winds us deeper into the webs of secrets that fill the town. I enjoyed the twists and turns of this mystery, and the killer was deceptively clever. Myrtle's attitude was just as snide as ever, and yet she proves she loves her family and close friends very much, in her own way.

If you enjoyed the other Myrtle Clover books, definitely pick up this one. But once again, I would suggest starting at the beginning of the series. The mysteries are so much fun, and the characters in the small town of Bradley are fascinating. The atmosphere of the small town just gets better and better as the series goes on. And even the main cast is being expanded as we go on. I can't wait to read even more about this wonderful town and all of the wonderful characters.

A Body at Bunco (Myrtle Clover Mysteries Book 8)...finds Myrtle solving not only one murder, but two this time. In this story, one victim is killed in Myrtle's backyard while she is hosting a Bunco party for her daughter-in-law. Of course she asks her friend Miles for his input, being that he was also there at the party. Most of the story has Myrtle trying to solve the first murder by herself, as Miles seems to have picked up a virus. There are plenty of suspects, and while conducting her own investigation for the first murder, another murder takes place. This, besides trying to save the local newspaper, and get it back to the way it was, has Myrtle one very busy senior citizen. I can't wait for the next in the series.

The gnomes are back out on the front lawn so everyone knows Miss Myrtle's son Red is in the dog house again and no matter how much he tries to woo his crotchety octogenarian mama she refuses to let him off the hook so the gnomes stay. To add to Red's woes the plumbing at Red's is shut down and he now has to use Myrtle's house. Unfortunately, Red's wife Elaine is scheduled to host a Bunco party for her Bunco Club so Miss Myrtle graciously offers to host the party.

As luck would have it one of the Bunco ladies ends up getting murdered and is found lying on top of one of Myrtle's gnomes. Red is called in and it's like Deja vu since they have been down this road before.

Ms Craig takes the reader through a lot of twists and turns and ultimately Miss Myrtle solves the murder and the reader gets a delightful story.

Once again, Miz Myrtle Clover solves a murder that occurs where else? In her own backyard!
With no one to witness the crime but Myrtle's gnomes, Myrtle sets her cap and investigates.
Her side kick, Miles and his psychic cousin, Wanda lend insight into Myrtle's investigation.
Along the way, Puddin lends a hand at being Myrtle's eyes and ears as well as Myrtle's beloved feral cat, Pasha.

Myrtle Clover is back and investigating yet another murder despite admonitions from her son, Red, who happens to be her neighbor and also the police chief. Myrtle's DIL asks her to host bunco at the last minute, and she obliges, not knowing exactly what bunco entails. Ordinarily, as far as I know, bunco does not involve murder, but in this case, one of the guests ends up dead in Myrtle's backyard. Red's house has plumbing issues, so he and his wife & son troop on over to Myrtle's house several times a day to do laundry, use the bathroom, etc. Miles gets laid up with a stomach bug or something, so Myrtle is on her own for a bit here. She's a bit snoopy, a mite cantankerous, and quite a dab and at being stubborn.

Puddin' is still the housekeeper, though I can't imagine why!
This book is part of a series, but IMHO it can be read on its own.

I have almost all of her books. She's not quite as funny as Agatha Raisin, but I would recommend her books to Agatha Raisin fans. She should be living a nice quiet life in her senior years, but somehow someone in her neighborhood always gets murdered. She and her friend Miles try to figure out what happened. I'm loving these books and looking forward to reading more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Myrtle Is Just Perfect!!!

When I noted this cozy mystery at Amazon recently, it was the word "bunco" in the title that caught my attention first.

Many years ago, my mom used to host bunco parties and at that time, I was a little girl, sneaking out of bed to see what was going on with all these ladies moving around our living room and porch, the tables, the treats...what a nice memory it brought to mind.

The story itself was a real treat. Myrtle is my kind of main character. She is spunky, sassy, opinionated (in a good way) and speaks her mind and lives life on her own terms. She is not portrayed as some achy, whining older woman (which is too often the case in other books), who is past doing anything constructive or exciting, far from it.

The story has LOTS of twists and turns and red herrings left along the way. Had me guessing who the real killer(s) was too, I like that. I don't like stories with obvious finales almost right from the start, that are too obvious.

I took off one star, not because I didn't like the story (I did) but for the following reason: I wrote a very complimentary email to this author, when I finished the book but never got a reply. Maybe lost in cyberspace, maybe not.

I do think it's VERY important (as an author myself) that we acknowledge good feedback from readers and fans. That took a bit of "the shine" off my feelings about this author overall. If you don't want feedback or have the time to write back to fans, don't offer a contact option at your blog/site.

UPDATE OCT. 21/15: I have now upgraded my rating to 5 star as the author responded to my review in a comment at Amazon.com. :-)

A charming but feisty senior, Myrtle Clover uses her wits and her ear for gossip to solve murders before her son, who happens to the Chief of Police in their small town. Myrtle has the competitive edge because she has no hesitation in using whatever ruse will work to get to the truth. Without ever losing sight of the fact that murder is the most dastardly of crimes, the taking of a life so that there are no more opportunities or choices for the deceased, the author makes this story an enjoyable romp through small-town America. Miss Myrtle, an 80-year-old retired schoolteacher, may never remember the name of the game she was hosting when the murder happened - or was "bonkers" an ironic comment on its nature? - but she never loses sight of the facts that matter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still not sure what Bunco is.....
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 30, 2015
One of a series, I enjoy the protagonist being a retired teacher, and the small-town setting in the US south. All the books I've read in this series have been well-written and formatted properly for the Kindle, I always find it difficult to believe such a sharp lady is such a poor cook, but imagine that's put in for entertainment while the murder part develops. The murders in the various books all seem believable, and the motives are usually banal and simple, so it is easy to believe in the solution, and not think it's far-fetched. They are traditional mysteries in that the clues are all put there to work out who did it, sometimes helped along by tips from the local psychic. Miles is an excellent sidekick, although I am never sure why he retired to the town.

I love Myrtle Clover. I enjoyed A Body at Bunco - made me laugh. I can just picture the actress Stephanie Cole who plays Diana in the TV series Waiting for God as Myrtle. I wish Red had a bigger part in the book since the banter between mom and son is hilarious. Looking forward to the next book in the series Murder on Opening Night.

Read this book again June 2017. Still enjoy the series.
