Somewhere within Thorncliff's labyrinth of rooms lies the journal Chloe desperately seeks. But in the face of public danger and enemies hiding in plain sight, both must decide how much they're willing to risk to solve the mysteries of the heart.

Chloe Heartly no longer believes in love. The young widow learned this painful lesson from her philandering husband. The same husband who states he knew who killed her grandfather & Earl of Duncaster & the information can be found in an encoded book at the Duncaster Estate. Luckily her family is vacationing at Thorncliff Manor, the Countess of Duncaster’s estate which gives Chloe the perfect opportunity to look for the book.
James, the Earl of Woodford, as one duty to perform for the King – find the encoded book that lists the names of those behind a conspiracy against the King. A mission that takes him to Thorncliff Manor along with his mentor, the gentleman who raised him after his parents were killed by these same people when he was a young boy.
When fate continues to bring them together they form an alliance, albeit a very stranded alliance, to work together to find the book. A series of miscommunications, near misses at being caught, a persistent gentleman friend and a scorned woman are only a few of the obstacles they face. But beware there’s more going on than either one of them believed.
An outstanding example of Sophie Barnes’ writing. Ms. Barnes has you hooked right from the beginning of this wonderful novel. I admired Chloe’s backbone in standing up for want she wanted or intended to get & James, ever the alpha male, realizing what he had within in grasp. And the twists & turns the story takes had my heart racing.
Excited to see where Ms. Barnes takes us on our next adventure at Thorncliff Manor.

I really enjoyed this book even though it was somewhat predictable. I appreciated the forthrightness of the two main characters. There wasn't pages of misinterpreted feelings and/or words. It was cleared up quickly, so that left out a lot of frustration. The romance/intimate moments between the two were very PG. **SPOILER** When the two main characters do sleep together, it's glossed over and summarized - i.e. the author does not go into detail about the encounter, so it's a very clean romance in my opinion. If you're looking for something more explicit, this is not your book. Overall, it was a great book for me. Kept me interested the entire time.

Excellent story by Sophie Barnes! James was sent to Thorncliff Manor to hunt for a book. Lady Newbury was also there with her family and she was looking for this book. The book was a list of names that belonged to a group called the “Elector”. This story is one that needs to be read because of the different events that happen and to find out who the bad person is.

I have read several other books by this author and generally enjoyed them, but I had trouble getting into this story and had to force myself to continue reading in case it got better. Around 67% it got more interesting but it never got good.
For me, the first problem was the "Mcguffin" which Alfred Hitchcock described as a way to give the reason for the story's existence. In this case it was the murder of the heroine's grand father and the hero's parents years before. They both learn there may be a group of assassins who control the leadership of Europe by having their opponents eliminated. The King has asked the hero to find a book that is believed to have the names of the men in the group and stop them before there is another assassination attempt on his life. The heroine just happens to be looking for the same book and they keep running into each other skulking around the mansion where it is rumored the book is hidden. That just seemed a little far fetched to me.
Problem two; they constantly are attracted to each other but each has their own reason for not falling for the other. Over and over again they come together then change their minds. They constantly dream about how much each wants the other then change their minds for one reason or another. I found it very tedious.
Problem number three; it was obvious from near the beginning who the bad guy was. There was a red herring that I didn't suspect until about 90% of the way so that was a pleasant surprise.
Finally, the bit at the end was really stupid and would never really happen.
I would recommend you skip this book and read something else by this author.

Not your typical historical romance. The hero and heroine meet and are attracted to each other but both wary of involvement. They find themselves working to stop a group of noble traitors amid sword fights and other action. Good ending.

This book kept me hooked until the end. I would recommend this book to all my friends. Great read. Unable to put it down

I swear I didn't think I'd ever reach the end of this one. I've never before read a novel that was so slow-paced.

James was hunting a journal that would reveal traitors. Chloe was hunting the same journal. That was the plot and it sounded good but it soon went south. They shared a few kisses, so the first half of the story was devoted to their discussing the kisses while occasionally hunting for the journal.

Until the last 20%, the plot got lost in the shuffle because the author likes words. If one will suffice, let's make it three.

As much as the premise intrigued, the novel was let down by its execution.

Too bad this was such a disappointment. Bored me to tears. This is the first of Ms. Barnes' novels I've read. Since I think it only fair to give an author three shots, maybe I'll like the next two and find that this one was an anomaly.
