These questions seem foolish, because if the body is making cholesterol, there is an obvious purpose. Drink some herbal tea to relax because here comes a little biochemistry. Cholesterol is a small molecule made by all mammals that contains three different elements or atoms: carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. In fact, each cholesterol molecule contains 27 carbon atoms, 46 hydrogen atoms, and 1 oxygen atom. This "scary" substance contains only these 3 basic elements. We are not talking about dangerous heavy metals like mercury and lead. Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen are the building blocks of life. Cholesterol is a pretty basic structure that has been around for hundreds of millions of years. This fact was drilled into young, fertile minds during medical school but was suffocated by the tentacles of big Pharma and their cheerleaders in the media.
Cholesterol is a hydrophobic waxy molecule, meaning it does not like water, preferring the company of fat. Think pot of chicken soup left out all night and the thick layer of fat on top. Because of this unique structure, cholesterol must travel around the body with "friends" LDL and HDL, but more on that later.
About 25% of cholesterol production occurs in the liver and most cells in the body are capable of producing this life sustaining product including the intestines, adrenal glands, and reproductive organs. On a side note, the liver is a large organ in the upper right portion of your abdomen. It is responsible for hundreds of functions including detoxification (removing the gunk from the body), the manufacturing of proteins and fats, storage and breakdown of sugar, digestion of food, and MAKING CHOLESTEROL. The body makes about 1000 mg daily, enough to fill a vitamin capsule.
Cholesterol is a found in all foods that come from an animal, because animals need it to live, just like humans do. The typical daily consumption of cholesterol in the U.S. is 200-300 mg. That is about the weight of 3 raindrops. The cholesterol from food is in the ester form (uh oh...biochemistry again) that is not absorbed well by the body and is preferentially passed in the stool. The gut prefers to absorb unesterified cholesterol that was made by the liver and excreted into the bile to assist with digestion. The majority of cholesterol that is made by the liver is excreted into the gall bladder to digest food, particularly fat. It seems to reason that a good way to process cholesterol, along with clearing out the liver and gall bladder, is to eat fat. In what is called enterohepatic circulation, about 50% of this excreted cholesterol is reabsorbed by a healthy GI tract. There are some pharmaceuticals and natural supplements that prevent reabsorption as a way to lower lipid numbers. There are tests available to determine if you are a hyperabsorber or a hypersynthesizer of cholesterol. Most people either make a lot or absorb a lot, which stands to reason, because of the importance of this molecule.
Synthesis of cholesterol starts with the molecule acetyl CoA which gets converted to HMG-CoA. This molecule is then reduced to mevalonate by the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase. Blockade of this enzyme is the main effect of the group of pharmaceuticals called statins such as Lipitor and Crestor. Enzymes are proteins that convert product A to product B. In this case, many nutrients are created in this long road to cholesterol production. Has it ever occurred to medical doctors that some of these intermediates are important?

Great Book from a Great Doctor!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2016We live in a world where everything seems upside down, especially in our healthcare and medical system.
We have barely escaped the time when a doctor dared to suggest that doctors wash their hands between autospies and delivering babies which in the long run landed him in an insane asylum where he died.
Everywhere we turn, we are being poisoned through our food, water, drugs, vaccines and our choices in the grocery store are getting slim.
One of my great salvations, is to turn to the holistic experts to help make sense of it all.
I appreciate Dr. Wolfson’s knowledge and expertise and for his courage to break
Away from the status quo. He is not afraid to stand alone and he triumphs every time.
Thank God for his chance ( more like destined timeline of great love) meeting at the farmer’s market where he met his now lovely wife, who is a chiropractor and the mother of his children. They are a beautiful family to follow and learn from.
My heart went out to Dr. Wolfson in his book as he described his struggles when he was trying to implement his new ideas among a system that does not want to change.
I am a holistic caregiver and I take care of the elderly. I know a little of what it is like to stand up to a doctor or dentist who is in the mainstream.
I had a recent experience where I had to tell an oral surgeon and dentist that no, my patient would not being getting a second root canal over the old root canal. It is bad enough that he had the first root canal, but to be told he needed a second is archaic medicine. Dr. Wolfson goes over the dangers of root canals in his book.
Another recent experience was being yelled at because he was NOT on Warfarin, even though he was on Boluoke which has been used in Chinese hospitals safely now for a long time. His blood was normal, not too thick and not to thin.
My favorite thing about Dr. Wolfson is he takes people off Warfarin and replaces it with natural choices instead. Very few doctors will dare to do this, even those who are Integrative because of the criticism of their peers.
Dr. Wolfson is filling a great gap that is needed in the holistic field. We have so many Integrative doctors, but very few natural or Integrative cardiologists. Very few cardiologists will agree with an Integrative’s doctors supplements and lack of drugs, so the care usually falls apart when the patient goes for their annual check up.
I really recommend anyone who wants to learn the latest news to prevent heart attacks and strokes and who wants to have a healthy family in this very trying time we are in.
Dr. Wolfson is a voice of reason and I will be tuning into what he has to say, for a very long time.
Thank you so much for your book, your desire to be a light for us all and for your courage.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2024My wife suffers from Afib which isvery disruptive at times and puts her at a high risk for heart attack or stroke. Multiple heart doctors have told her that they can't help her due to an underlying health condition which causes her to have low platelet counts in her blood. This condition rules out the two main approaches to correcting Afib; blood thinners or ablation. The Paleo Cardiologist offers a more natural approach centered around following a strict Paleo diet and using natural supplements that Dr Wofson recommends. He at least hold out some hope for her to control her Afib whereas other heart doctors wash their hands of it. Thank you Dr Wolfson for writing this book.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2015I read the entire book. I have studied natural health and healing for a long time. So much of it was not new to me. However, I did learn some things. I really admire the author's courage in writing the book and going against the paradigm of modern Western medicine. His wife Heather must be one very persuasive lady to have motivated him to change his views about health and healing given his own education and training and having a father who was a cardiologist. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about natural healing and healing with a focus on heart health.
I think there are areas in which the author could improve the book. The book needed a better copy edit. There are numerous errors of word usage and typos. Also, I grew tired of the author's asserting his macro-evolutionary views quite often. I believe we are wonderfully made by a great creator God and are not the product of macro-evolution. I expect that many other readers believe we were created by God. Dr. Wolfson is entitled to his belief in macro-evolution, but he should have realized that many readers would not share such views. He could have expressed the main views about natural health and healing without so much mention of evolution.
I would like to have seen a discussion of The Unified Theory of heart disease as developed by Dr. Linus Pauling. While the author does mention Dr. Pauling and vitamin C. there is no discussion of The Unified Theory. I do not remember lysine being mentioned at all. To learn more about this theory, read the book by another great alternative cardiologist Dr. Thomas Levy.
I am aware that the publisher wants to keep a book readable. some of these additional areas would take up much more space. However, at least a brief discussion about The Unified Theory, a more in-depth discussion of the benefits of vitamin C, and some discussion of lysine would have been nice. I think the author certainly has enough material for an additional book and other information products.

2.0 out of 5 stars Não tão bom
O livro é bom nos primeiros capítulos. Mas não é espetacular.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alternative healing with food for thought
An interesting alternative view based on the perspective that heart disease is a modern concept and that by taking a life style that reflects an earlier period of human evolution, heart disease can be treated to better effect.

The book has a lot of interesting information. But i find that the self promotion and selling of products sort of blurs the credibility of its contents
