Omar Al-Bashir and Africa's Longest War Kindle Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

President Omar al-Bashir is Africa's and arguably Arabia's most controversial leader. In power since 1989, he is the first sitting head of state to be issued with an arrest warrant, for war crimes, by International Criminal Court. He has been a central personality in Islamic and African politics, as well as a love-to-hate figure for the US in the 'war on terror'.For military history readers, Al-Bashir is a field marshal who has fought possibly the world's longest conflict. Modern Sudan has been embroiled in war since 1955.No proper biography has been written on him before. Nor has there been a comprehensive military history of Sudan. The book briefly covers the military background until independence. Then it dissects the long north-south civil war until Bashir's Islamist military coup in 1989. Thereafter it narrates the wars in the east, south, west (in Darfur), International political and military intervention is also factored in.The author draws on in-depth one-on-one interviews with Bashir himself and his family and close political, military and intelligence colleagues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back-story of the current war in Sudan

If, like me you have no idea what has caused the terrible new war in Sudan, (2023 as I read it) this book will give you excellent background information. Written in 2019/20 before this current war, Professor Moorcraft's usual elegant style makes all the technical detail very accessible, and the characters very recognisable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A man and his nation
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 5, 2015
This is a well written review of one of the most enigmatic African leaders and least understood countries.Moorcraft is obviously well connected and utilises those connections to provide an entertaining and up to date picture of a vast country that has not enjoyed the best press for a number of years, starting with General Gordon!
For anyone with a general interest in Africa and certainly for anyone planning a visit the book will be useful. It isn't a dry academic treatise and even manages to introduce some amusing tales and anecdotes into a history that has often been tragic and, on occasions, brutal
Al-Bashir is given a fair treatment and for a man with a particularly negative image in the West emerges as an interesting and, perhaps, somewhat misunderstood man, although there is no attempt to brush over the appalling abuses that have occurred in a long period in power.
If you want an up to date picture of an African state which, potentially, could have a bright future but also a warts and all account of the casualties inflicted in getting there this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars it has significance for an better grasp of the whole global geopolitical scene today
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 28, 2015
Professor Paul Moorcraft is a incisive analyst of the politics and history of a key region much overlooked and much misunderstood by the average reader in all the focus on the Arab Spring elsewhere and the remaking of neighbouring states both in Africa in the Middle East. His account of the realpolitik of the Western and Eastern major players is telling and told well: it has significance for an better grasp of the whole global geopolitical scene today. Moreover it is based on real experience, much being written in the first hand from many interviews with key players where he has been brave enough to ask the questions others may fear to ask, and been rewarded with some straight answers. A great read.
