Classic Diners of Connecticut Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

Over twenty thousand miles of highways and main streets crisscross the state of Connecticut, inviting hungry travelers and locals into the more than one hundred diners that dot the roadways. Among these eateries are some of the most prized American classic diners manufactured by such legendary builders as DeRaffele, O'Mahony, Tierney and Kullman. Author Garrison Leykam hosts a road trip to Connecticut's diners, celebrating local recipes and diner lingo--order up a #81, frog sticks or a Noah's boy with Murphy carrying a wreath--as well as stories that make each diner unique. Tony's Diner in Seymour still keeps pictures of the 1955 flood to always remember the tragedy the diner overcame. Stories like these--of tragedy, triumph, sanctuary, comfort and community--fill the pages in this celebration of classic and historic diners of the Nutmeg State.

What a great book! Being a huge fan of the American Diner culture, this book is a fabulous resource for road trips. The research is spot on, the writing is fabulous and while it might not sound like a compliment, this book will be residing in either the glove box of my car, or the saddlebags of my Harley as it will be used constantly. I even bought a 2nd copy to pass along as a birthday present to a fellow Diner fan. Stay away from chain restaurants.....buy this book and experience what America is really all about; local business and 'locals' who make up our nation!

A HUGE part of my interest in proper, vintage, historical diners is the aesthetics of the good ole diners themselves. The quality of the photographs in this book is really inexplicable. Dull, grey, distant, sad photos, poorly reproduced on the pages, make for a pretty weak first impression of this book. Depressing, actually. And since the appearance of each diner directly influences my interest in learning more, I'm over it before I've begun.

I'm sorry, but this seems like such a lazy exercise in a "book." Published in 2013 no less - simply put, anyone with a point and shoot can self-publish a better looking book than this one. I don't see why there couldn't have been more effort with this item. If it is at all a requirement for you that this book contain halfway decent photographs of the diners it describes, take a pass.

Buy this book if you love authentically classic diners. Readers will treasure this book because Leykam's stories about each diner are not the usual run-of-the-mill restaurant reviews. His stories are interesting--about the owners, the cooks, the waitresses and waiters--even the patrons. You will learn why they bought and work the diner, why and what they like to cook, what the specialties are, and heart-warming stories about the persons who serve your food. By the way, keep this in your glove box. When you're in a town and looking for a happy place to eat, find your diner.

This is a very decent overview of the diner situation in Connecticut today. While not adorned with an abundance of photos, it is nonetheless a concise review of extant diners in the state. For anyone interested in the history of diner design, cuisine, ownership as well as the social elements endemic to diners, this book will not disappoint.

Much description of just a few diners in CT. I would have preferred to read evaluations of many more diners, i.e. the quality of their food, rather than the "descriptions" that the author provided. I was very anxious to purchase the book but very disappointed in the content. This is not worth purchasing.

Writer provides a nice history of how diners came about to include who built them. Also, provides good info on the diners in CT and their owner(s). Did not mention the AERO diner in Wyndham, which I expected to see included. What other diners did he miss?.

A fun read that would be much better with additional photos.

Too much of the book is devoted to the menu of each particular Diner

4.0 out of 5 stars On the road con nostalgia
Reviewed in Italy on July 14, 2021
