About the author

Leigh Bale is a Publisher's Weekly best selling author of inspirational contemporary romance, romantic suspense and medieval romance. She won the prestigious Golden Heart in 2006. More recently, she was a finalist winner of the Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence, the Bookseller's Best Award, and the Write Touch Award. She is the daughter of a retired U.S. forest ranger, holds a B.A. in History with honors, loves grandkids, spending time with family, weeding the garden with her dog Sophie, and watching the little sagebrush lizards that live in her rock flowerbeds. Married in 1981 to the love of her life, Leigh and her professor husband now have two wonderful children and two grandchildren. But life has not always been rosy. In 1996, Leigh's seven year-old daughter was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. In the dark years that followed, God never abandoned them. After six surgeries, two hundred and eighty-four stitches, a year of chemo, and a myriad of other difficulties, Leigh's daughter is now a grown woman and considered less than 1% survivorship in the world for her type of tumor. Life is good! Truly the Lord has blessed Leigh's family. She now transfers the love and faith she's known into the characters of her stories. Readers who have their own trials can find respite within the uplifting message of Leigh's books. You can reach Leigh at LeighBale.com.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2015This is a story with a rich and compelling love. Sam is every woman's dream, full of fun, maturity, and a sweet romantic. Rachel is a lovely widow, still grieving, but lonely at the same time. She has a seven year old son, Danny, who is sweetly trying to be the man of the house, while he's grieving for his dad. From the first page to the last, this is a story that you, the reader, will fall in love with, too.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2013Okay, I LOVE Sam, Rachel, Gladys, Charlie, and Danny! They all worked together to make this story excellent.
Rachel and Danny drove into town on a cold winter night during a snowstorm. Rachel hit some black ice and totaled her car (she sprained her wrist, didn't break it like the back of the book said). Sam was there to take her and Danny in.
They were both suffering from losses. Rachel's loss was only a year old and Danny was still feeling the ache of it. Somehow, Sam still hadn't healed after twelve years of suffering. But there was something between the two. Sam tried to run at first but soon gave into his feelings. They both helped each other!
I loved Danny and his love for dogs. I'm glad that Rachel let Danny play with dogs even though she was afraid of them. I enjoyed the stories that took place at the vet. I even liked the stories at the restaurant.
My only complaint (and the reason I didn't give this book a five) is that I was a bit lost in the time period. When the story first started, I assumed it was close to Thanksgiving/Christmas. But there was no mention of them occurring. I'm thinking maybe the author was a bit confused on when the book took place?
The romance was great. In a situation like this, you don't expect a lot of physical affection. I think it's something that evolved slowly. The physical contact that was made was done purposely and carefully. I think this holds in line with the broken hearts the two were still trying to get over.
Finally, I enjoyed Danny's attitude toward Sam. I think this really touched on real fears that many children suffer from. A child loves his father and mother. A substitute just won't do, and some children just won't accept one without giving them time to do so. I respected the view the author took on this.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2009This was a sweet romance and I loved the characters, but I couldn't give it the full five stars, because I didn't feel any chemistry between the hero and heroine or think the romance was developed enough, nor was there even a kiss but one very slight whisper of a kiss, that is not enough to make a believable romance.
