Sisters separated as children are reunited as adults in this wise, funny novel by the New York Times–bestselling author of The Diary.

Lindsay and Kerrie Ann Bishop were twelve and three when they were shunted into the foster care system. Thirty years later, Kerrie Ann, a high school dropout who has bounced from family to family, flies to Santa Cruz to meet the sister she never knew she had. With no job skills and no significant other, Kerrie Ann needs the help of her long-lost sister to regain custody of her six-year-old daughter, Bella.

Lindsay, who grew up in a loving adoptive family, has spent decades trying to track down her sister. When Kerrie Ann suddenly appears in her bookstore—a seemingly lost, but tough-looking young woman with pink streaks in her hair—she’s stunned. With help from an eighty-year-old exotic dancer, a bad-boy baker, and a sexy bestselling novelist, Lindsay is determined to help Kerrie Ann turn her life around. But Lindsay—and the sleepy seaside town of Blue Moon Bay—will never be the same.

From the
New York Times–bestselling author of Garden of Lies and other blockbusters, this is both “a touching story with wide appeal [and] a sharp example of dysfunctional family fiction” (Publishers Weekly).

Eileen Goudge

Young Goudge with her Sister

Goudge, age three, and her sister, Laura, in a playhouse built by their father. In addition to being a painter and insurance agent, Goudge’s father also designed and built houses.

Goudge at a Book Signing

Goudge with her younger sister, Patty, at a book signing for Garden of Lies in 1986. For Goudge, one of the most exciting aspects of the book’s release was sharing with her friends and family a project she’d been working on for so long.

Goudge with her Husband

Goudge with her husband, Sandy Kenyon, near his homestead in Vermont. Goudge’s own real-life romance reads like those in her novels: After three failed marriages, she met Kenyon while being interviewed for the radio. When the interview ended, they continued the conversation, talking up to three hours each night, and married soon after.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

As children, sisters Lindsay and Kerri Ann are shunted into the foster care system after their mother is arrested for selling drugs in Goudge's (The Diary) charming newest. Lindsay is fortunate enough to be adopted by a loving family, while younger Kerri Ann bounces from family to family, becoming a teenage runaway, getting into drugs and eventually losing custody of her own daughter. Thirty years after they last saw each other, Kerri Ann shows up on Lindsay's doorstep in a last ditch effort to save herself. Lindsay, of course, has troubles of her own, and her nearly unrecognizable sister turning up is the last thing she needs. The tension in the sisters' relationship is believable, and while romantic subplots are completely predictable, family dynamics are beautifully handled, particularly between the girls and the woman who tried to save them from foster care, stripper Miss Honi. A touching story with wide appeal, Goudge's novel is a sharp example of dysfunctional family fiction. (Oct.)

I’m a writer by day, with 16 fiction titles and 1 cookbook to my name, and wife of a film critic by night. Be careful what you tell me or it might end up in one of my novels. I come from a large family with a few skeletons rattling around in the closet. I’m also a mom and serial wife (my current husband is not my first, though he's without a doubt the last). Fortunately my friends and family are still speaking to me, and readers continue to read what I’ve written. Maybe because I’m not afraid to go there. So, please, pull up a chair if you dare.

I was kind of perusing for a book to read, and didn't realize how deep I was into this one until I read several chapters. Down to earth story. The author knows that life can be hard. Some people get breaks, and others work hard for them. Author seems to have realistic knowledge of 12 step programs, but got ridiculous in her depiction of a 'drug score' (oh spare me!) This was a nice read, not too heavy, not too fluffy. A nice break from mysteries and thrillers.

Once in a Blue Moon is about two sisters who were put in different foster homes at a young age. One went to a very nice couple who lived on in Blue Moon Bay (which by it's location and description is obviously Half Moon Bay on the California coast, south of San Francisco). She was eventually adopted. The other, was bounced from one foster home to the next and finally ran away at the age of 16. As adults, they were like night and day.
I had a difficult time with the first section of the book about their childhood. I believe that had more to do with my personal baggage than with the book itself. I set it down once and read another book, but my curiosity as to what happened to this yin/yang sister relationship drew me back. When the book jumped 25+ years later, the story became more interesting. I had to find out what happened to them. Each sister had their own life altering dragon to slay, not to mention their relationship to reconcile. Plus,I came to be enthralled with the minor characters, because of their quirkiness and because of their great love.
Sit in a comfy chair with a glass of wine and read this book. You'll be glad you did!

Love Eileen Goudge’s books! Received when I was supposed to but have not read yet. But I do recommend this seller 😊

I have read many of this author's books and I loved most. This was disappointing a beach read at best, cotton candy for the mind. Every move was predictable and even the sinister characters were too likeable i.e. not fully developed. The theme was glaring, the vocabulary basic and the characters were stereotypes. For light reading this is okay but I prefer details and being asked to think by the author.

Good story about sisters separated as children into different foster homes, reuniting and continuing along life paths that crisscross and clash and in the end find peace. Set in beautiful California coast and run by older sister Lindsay, the book store in Blue Moon Bay is the place where people like to gather. When Kerri Ann walks through the doors one afternoon hoping to find her long lost sister she finds even more than she dreamed. Lindsay is forever changed by this sister -- sibling -- stranger who challenges her stable secure world. Kerri Ann is shocked to find Miss Honi, the ex stripper, aka exoctic dancer who took the girls under her protective wing long ago when they were children left alone much too often by their neglectful drug addicted mother, is Lindsay's housemate and store clerk. Miss Honi is beside herself with joy as the only children she calls hers are together again. Romance walks in and around their world along with trouble as the story develops into a struggle over Lindsay's inheritance and the city's eminent domain land rights, Kerri's child custody conflict and the men who are all wrong and so right for these sisters.
Eileen Goudge doesn't disappoint.

She has a great writing style that just makes the story flow. You root for the underdog and you see what happens when they don't give up and believe in themselves.
