Sherlock Holmes and the Apocalypse Murders Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 60 ratings

A gruesome new murder puts London’s greatest detective on the trail of Jack the Ripper—again. “[Day] always captures the flavor of Conan Doyle” (The Sherlockian E-Times).

Croxley Mews is a typical London street: narrow, winding, and dark. Sherlock Holmes has never trod its cobblestones—until the day a woman is found lying dead on them. It is a murder gruesome enough to shock even the battle-hardened Dr. Watson, who has never before seen a woman disemboweled. It looks unmistakably like the handiwork of that notorious murderer who stalked the alleys of Whitechapel a decade before. Holmes is not fazed. He caught Jack the Ripper once—and he will do so again.

At the height of the Ripper murders, Holmes was called in by his brother Mycroft to catch the killer, whose social position made him impossible to arrest. The killer was exiled, but now he may have returned—bringing all the terrors of the apocalypse in his wake.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Another title in the Sherlock Holmes 'Murder' series. Sherlockian Times reviewer says of Sherlock Holmes and the Apocalypse Murders..."A number of authors have written excellent Sherlock Holmes pastiches. But none exceed Barry Day. He always captures the flavor of Conan Doyle and always comes up with a new, fresh plot. The pace is swift, right from the first page to the thrilling finale. This book is hard to put down. I would rate it a 9.5!"

From the Author

I have tried in my Sherlock Holmes/Dr Watson pastiches to be faithful to the attitude and language of the originals. All of the incidents depicted either happened or could have happened, had the characters been real people at the time. Holmes could have met Sigmund Freud or Oscar Wilde. My only nod to the modern reader is to indicate Holmes's prescience at that distant date over things which we know did take place. The strange thing that I find happens when writing about Holmes and Watson is that they take over the telling of the story. Often I find they have taken me somewhere I had no conscious intention of going. They make exciting traveling companions and I hope we have many more adventure together! Sincerely Barry Day

Being a Sherlock Holmes "nerd," I am always leary of authors writing a "new" SH story. Some are quite imaginative and stay within the SH guidelines well, and this is one of them. The author reopened "the Jack the Ripper" case and created a new and exciting story. I definitely enjoyed the story and would recommend it. It moved along quickly and had a satisfactory ending.

Not very good one of the worst attempts to write a Sherlock Homes mystery I have read in a long while.

An exciting story filled with Sherlock, Watson, Mycroft, Wilde, Adler and the familiars. It's a believable take on the Jack the Ripper mystery and suggests why it was never publicly solved, throw in biblical quotes and a creative story emerges. If you are a Doyle fan and have a few hours to spare you won't find anything more engrossing than the . . . . Apocalypse Murders.

Given the number of wretched Holmes stories out there, it's nice to read one, that, while not remarkable, tells an entertaining tale. There were a few things that irked me, such as foreshadowing of future historical events. Still if you are looking for something worthwhile, to read, this should do nicely m

With Holmes' books, one's never sure what they'll get but this one held up well. Worth reading.

As a collector of Sherlock Holmes oriented works there is a certain expectation I have about the physical make-up of a book. It this is important to you as well, consider this a critical alert. When I received this printing I had to search to find it in the box - yes the book itself was small - though small does not conjure up the proper idea I am trying to communicate - I must call this printing a "book-ette". Good size for a child's doll house.
The actual story, once I found it was solid. However, I believe in the total reading experience - the physical surroundings of the room, the weather, etc. This book-ette left me disappointed. If I could figure out how to get my money back I would.
