I Said Yes: My Story of Heartbreak, Redemption, and True Love Kindle Edition
Millions know Emily Maynard Johnson from her appearances on both The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. At the end of a long, fruitless search for a husband, Emily found that waiting right in front of her all along was the truest love of all: the unconditional love of the Lord.
Overcome with embarrassment following her nationally televised heartbreaks, Emily finally committed herself to the only one she knew would never leave her empty and alone. Abandoning her need to be chosen by men and finding peace in the fact that she was already chosen by God, Emily found the joy she had been looking for in serving God.
I Said Yes chronicles Emily's experiences on both The Bachelor and The Bachelorette and the way that God turned her life upside down through the knowledge and acceptance of His true love.
As Emily sheds light on her life as a believer in the spotlight, she teaches us:
- How to embrace the gift of true redemption
- What it means to fully surrender your heart to God
- How to say yes to God's ways, God's love, and God's timing
In I Said Yes, Emily tells the story of her life before and after reality TV fame, describing the profound new reality she discovered when she traded fame in favor of the Lord--and to that unconditional love, Emily said yes.

CHAPTER 1
Church lady," my brother, Ernie, three years my senior, spewed with disgust. I pretended I didn't hear. It was a name he had called me for years. And oddly, it had nothing to do with the fact that I went to church. Because I didn't, except on that rare occasion when it didn't seem like such an enormous chore for my parents to get everyone together and out the door on time for Catholic Mass. I was dubbed the church lady because I was more or less a Goody Two-Shoes. (Maybe just one reason I had a tendency to fall for the bad boys, some of whom shall remain nameless in my vault of shame.) As a little girl, it made sense to follow the rules. I was pretty stringent. And I wasn't shy about voicing my disapproval when the ones I loved most committed certain infractions. Like smoking.
I remember when I was around ten, bouncing up the creaky wooden staircase in our home, when I heard a familiar click-click-click from the stove. My father was lighting a cigarette the old-fashioned way. I made a beeline down the stairs and tore into the kitchen screaming bloody murder. "Dad, don't do that!" I pleaded, tears streaming down my face. "You're going to die."
A chill from the tiled kitchen floor shivered through my body as a scene from health class a few weeks earlier replayed in my mind. The teacher had droned on and on ad nauseam about the harmful effects of smoking. I sat at my desk, barely hearing a word she was saying, riveted by a glossy photograph that was being passed around the room. There, right before my eyes, was a high-quality image of a blackened, diseased lung. I stared in horror at the charred-looking organ. So when Dad whipped out a deadly cancer stick from his back pocket, all I could think about was what was happening to his insides. Unfortunately, he didn't appreciate my good-willed theatrics. A man who stuffed his emotions, Dad simply rolled his eyes, realizing he could avoid the drama by not smoking in front of me.
Sometimes, if he was annoyed enough at my church-lady antics, he gave me more than an eye roll. Like the time we were in Key West, where we spent a few weeks most summers, and Dad reached for his crinkly pack of smokes. On cue I started ranting and raving with high-pitched cries. My father shook his head and reached for something else in his other back pocket.
"Here," he sighed, pressing a credit card into the palm of my hand. "Go on now, sweetie, go shopping."
Staying true to my obedient little self, I wiped dry my tears and nodded in compliance. "Okay, Dad. I will." It was his most expensive cigarette.
Planting roots near Cheat Lake in Morgantown, West Virginia, home to the state's largest university, my father was an old-fashioned man who held firm to some pretty antiquated values I didn't agree with but, like a good Southern girl, rarely questioned. Dad was a hard worker; he still is. Growing up with empty pockets, he toiled in the coal mines as a teenager, spending ten grueling hours per day far below the earth's surface in the presence of thick dust, heavy equipment, and noxious fumes. He worked his way up over the years and bought a handful of coal mines; today he owns two as he is beginning to retire. I loved Dad but didn't see him much as business took up most of his time.
If I was the church lady, Mom was the Southern Martha Stewart, which means, unlike the famed M. Diddy (Martha's prison name), my mother wore a lot of noisy bangles and had a slight and very charming twang in her voice.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2016Let me start by saying I'm a fan of the bachelor/bachelorette. I fell in love with Emily on Brad's season and secretly hoped he wouldn't choose her so she could be the bachelorette.
Emily starts the book talking about her childhood and teen years. I had no idea she went to boarding school. Without giving too much away, she had a rough couple of years. Then she talks about Ricky, her daughter's father who died in a plane crash. I cried through those pages. I've heard her story so many times but reading it in detail was much more emotional.
Emily spends a lot of time talking about the bachelor, Brad, the girls in the house, etc. it was great to read some behind the scenes that happens in the mansion. Her relationship with Brad and just how awkward the whole thing was, especially when cameras are done rolling.
She talks about her journey as the Bachelorette, though much more dense. Her being stalked by paparazzi, etc. I wish she went more into detail about her experience, though Emily is a class act and wouldn't talk trash about the show or the guys.
Finally in the very last (!!!!) chapter of the book she talks about her Faith and turning to God's word for advice. She briefly talks about her relationship with her husband, I just wish there was more. The ending seemed a bit rushed. Their story is beautiful and I'd love to read more.
Overall I'm happy with the book, worth every penny. It made me reevaluate my relationship with God. Pick it up, you won't regret it!!
PS my girls may have been neglected for the 14 hours it took me to read this book. I couldn't put it down.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2016Very interesting to hear her upbringing and while she doesn't ever bash her parents, you can read between the lines and figure out that she wanted their time and attention more than anything. Money couldn't buy those. Emily grew up while raising her daughter and it seems her mom also grew up and matured alongside Emily as well. It was interesting to read how she met Ricky and how she fell head over heels in love with him. One could sense that he was her constant, her steady hand -- she could always count on him 100%.. For the first time in her life, she could count on someone to always be there. Emily discusses being on The Bachelor in great detail and the connection with Brad Womack was very strong. You could sense it in the book. While she doesn't say it, I really feel like, more than anything, not being able to date out in public or carry out a normal relationship -- being couped up in a house and all the media attention really led to the demise of that relationship. She also mentions not having a counselor or mediator to help them assimilate back into the real world. Wonder if that would have made a difference. After she writes many chapters about being on The Bachelor, Emily really doesn't delve into The Bachelorette as much. Once can sense that it was more of an experience and that she really didn't have much of a connection with any of them except for Arie -- and he likely would have been her final choice had he not had a relationship with producer Cassie, who Emily considers a good friend. It seems that Emily more enjoyed vying for Brad's heart than choosing a suitor when she was The Bachelorette. It sounds like The Bachelorette was a stressful experience for her. Not much is mentioned about finally meeting her current husband. The ending is far too abrupt, maybe because she became a mom again and writing was taking too long to complete? The climax of the book is The Bachelor and then the fast forward button is hit, except it is pressed too fast. Maybe she doesn't want to go into explicit detail because she wants to keep that part private. Who knows? But you can tell by reading the book that she is very private. However, there is a lot that she doesn't say -- you can read between the lines and figure out a lot by what she DOESN'T say. A very good read, all in all. Just too quick to end. I'm so glad to see that she is happy and has a wonderful husband. I can relate to her anxiety and always questioning everything, the pessimistic, questioning outlook on relationships and life. God is good though and I'm glad she said "YES" too. :)
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2016I have always loved Emily Maynard.. loved the way she carried herself, the way she presented herself, the values she has instilled in her daughter, and her style. When she came on the Bachelor, she was immediately my number one pick and I was just as excited when she became the Bachelorette. I bought this book on my kindle and read it within 2 days.. I couldn't put it down. I absolutely loved hearing her back story and how she got to where she is now. I adore and respect her 100x more today then I ever have before. There aren't many people in this world that could go through the heartache & heartbreak she has gone through and come out the way she has. She is the kind of person I have always wanted to be, and has made me want to work harder to become that person. I loved the quote towards the end of the book where she said her pastor stated to her and Tyler (I am probably not saying this correctly but it was with this point in mind) "you can give up on a marriage but you can't give up on a best friend". As a divorced, single mom - that REALLY struck a cord with me. Amazing book, Emily. You are every bit as poised and beautiful on the inside as you are on the outside.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not enough info about Jef
Although I was getting into the book anticipating the moment when I would find out just what went wrong between Emily and Jef…..I was disappointed because this issue wasn't properly addressed. It was just skimmed over. Emily just wrote that '' they had arguments''. Well. what were the issues? How did Ricki feel about Emilie's breakup with Jef? What about the accusations (read online) that Jef had called Emily a bad mom and broke up with her because of that fact? I'm not saying that that is what happened ( I truly believe that Emily is a great mother to Ricki), but I was looking for clarification on this matter. I feel that a whole lot was left out regarding the relationship with Jef and it was a disappointment.
Also, no pictures within the book? This is odd because every autobiographical book I've read shares photos with their readers. A strange side note: on the back jacket cover it showed Emily with Tyler and Ricki and new born baby. Also, Emily looked pregnant. Where was Jenning? Most probably the baby was born after the book's release, but since the photo was shown I think it should have been mentioned on the back jacket cover at least.
On the other hand I'm happy that Emily said that she felt closer to God and that her relationship with Tyler was happy. I just wish more had been written about the subject that I most wanted to read about : the relationship breakup with Jef.
