Richard Paul Evans

When Richard Paul Evans wrote the #1 best-seller, The Christmas Box, he never intended on becoming an internationally known author.

Officially, he was an advertising executive, an award-winning clay animator for the American and Japanese markets, candidate for state legislature and most importantly, husband and father. The Christmas Box was written as an expression of love for his (then) two daughters. Though he often told them how much he loved them, he wanted to express his love in a way that would be timeless. In 1993, Evans reproduced 20 copies of the final story and gave them to his closest relatives and friends as Christmas presents. In the month following, those 20 copies were passed around more than 160 times, and soon word spread so widely that bookstores began calling his home with orders for it.

His quiet story of parental love and the true meaning of Christmas made history when it became simultaneously the #1 hardcover and paperback book in the nation. Since then, more than eight million copies of The Christmas Box have been printed. The Emmy award-winning CBS television movie based on The Christmas Box starred Maureen O'Hara and Richard Thomas. Two more of Evans's books were produced by Hallmark and starred such well-known actors as James Earl Jones, Vanessa Redgrave, Naomi Watts, Mary McDonough and Academy award winner Ellen Burstyn. He has since written 10 consecutive New York Times bestsellers and is one of the few authors in history to have hit both the fiction and non-fiction bestseller lists. He has won three awards for his children's books including the 1998 American Mothers book award and two first place Storytelling World awards. Evans's latest book, The 5 Lessons a Millionaire Taught Me About Life and Wealth, is now available.

Of his success, Evans says: "The material achievements of The Christmas Box will never convey its true success, the lives it has changed, the families brought closer together, the mothers and fathers who suddenly understand the pricelessness of their children's fleeting childhood. I share the message of this book with you in hopes that in some way, you might be, as I was, enlightened."

During the Spring of 1997, Evans founded The Christmas Box House International, an organization devoted to building shelters and providing services for abused and neglected children. Such shelters are operational in Moab, Vernal, Ogden and Salt Lake City, Utah and Lucre, Peru. To date, more than 16,000 children have been housed in Christmas Box House facilities.

As an acclaimed speaker, Evans has shared the podium with such notable personalities as President George W. Bush, President George and Barbara Bush, former British Prime Minister John Majors, Ron Howard, Elizabeth Dole, Deepak Chopra, Steve Allen, and Bob Hope. Evans has been featured on the Today show and Entertainment Tonight, as well as in Time, Newsweek, People, The New York Times, Washington Post, Good Housekeeping, USA Today, TV Guide, Reader's Digest, and Family Circle. Evans lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, with his wife, Keri, and their five children.

I thought the book started out a little bit slow but once I got into it I realized I was dealing with a person in the book who had problems similar to a lot of people that I know. It was quite a lesson in how to handle people with emotional spiritual problem. The book has such a surprise ending that it knocks you off your seat

Our hero, Charles James, travels from rags to riches only to question what he has gained. Still a youth with ambition and determination, he meets people who offer him love (Monica) along with others who give him opportunities to put his talents to work to gain material wealth. As love and wealth conflict, Charles's life becomes one of great conflict. Richard Paul Evans is masterful in creating this story. The characters are truly believable; the plot unwinds with empathy and suspense. He describes human conditions vividly as he tells of the struggles Charles faces while trying to balance his morals with sudden wealth. The conclusion begs the question of "what happens next?" I highly recommend this book to anyone! If you're a RPE fan, be ready for another wonderful literary treat. If this is your introduction to his writing, prepare to look for his gems from the past, curl up and read them all.

As I read this story, I was surprised (although not disappointed) to find out that this story was not a completely fictional story. It is based loosely on the true story of a man under the alias of Charles James, with the main character telling and reflecting on his life, his rise and fall from grace.

Despite Charles making some wrong turns in life as he got older, due to understanding his early life in the beginning of the story, he always remained a likeable and sympathetic character to me. There was a sort of innocence to him in the actions his took, although some can be seen as unforgiveable. But in the end, I easily connected with him and was really rooting for things to turn around for him at the end.

And that’s where I will enter my only disappointment with the story. I felt like it ended in a sort of cliffhanger. In the end, Charles saw his opportunity to have a second chance at life, but as a reader, I didn’t get to discover what he made of it—what became of him. And that’s because, since this story is based on a true story, the actual Charles James was still figuring that out as the author made it clear. So I won’t knock down the story for that because despite the cliffhanger ending, as a reader, I got something valuable from it. Not only was I entertained, but I got another view on how easily life can steer one in the wrong direction, causing one to lose everything that matters, but on the positive side, how that wrong direction can open one’s eyes to what really matters. It was a good story all in all. I hope the author stays in touch with the man called Charles James and lets the readers know what became of his second chance.

I hesitated to buy all three when I noticed they were listed as "religious" but after the first one I realized that the author is not pushing religion. The main character does have a religious experience, but that's not the point of the book. It's a good read (I listened).

5.0 out of 5 stars Redemption is always possible
Reviewed in Canada on January 12, 2019
Redemption is the theme of this book. The next book will finish the story. However, in this book, we see the increasing need for redemption. Rather than using childhood abuse and poverty as an excuse theme for bad adult behaviour, Evans shows a man who uses this experience to propel himself forward. But economic success is not always the best way forward. Redemption involves much more.
