Nothing is Impossible: A Glider Pilot's Story of Sicily, Arnhem and the Rhine Crossing Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 37 ratings

Battle is the severest test a man can be called upon to undergo; it can bring out the best in a man and the worst...The author of this book, Victor Miller, joined the Queen's Royal Regiment, at Guildford, upon the outbreak of the Second World War. He volunteered for the elite Glider Pilot Regiment upon its formation and passed, with above average marks, the RAF pilot training programme. From here, he was to take part in three of the most iconic airborne operations of the entire conflict. The invasion of Sicily, the Allies first attack in to Europe, where he was wounded and temporarily taken prisoner; Arnhem, where the 1st Airborne Division struck sixty-four miles behind enemy lines only to clash with two SS Armoured Panzer Divisions resulting in 80% losses in nine days; and the assault crossing of the Rhine, into Germany proper, with 'only' 30% losses. This remarkable story, jotted down shortly after each operation when the events were still vivid in the author's mind, is an astonishing record of skill, bravery, comradeship and resourcefulness which represents a fitting tribute to many fallen friends and colleagues. The book was published initially in 1994, before the author's death. This posthumous edition comes with brand new supplementary content, drawn together by the author's sons and family.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Sad that the author is no longer with us, but great that the publisher has produced a new posthumous edition with additional material provided by his sons and family. Pioneered by the Germans, vertical insertion by glider and parachute was to revolutionize land warfare. This personal account by a British glider pilot of the large scale airborne assaults by British troops is fascinating and very valuable – Most Recommended."

About the Author

Victor Miller was born in the London Borough of Croydon on 6 July 1919. After finishing school at the age of fifteen, he worked as an estate agent before joining up in October 1939. He was demobbed in 1946, moved to New York in 1947 and worked in Import/Export until he returned in 1951. He retired in 1980 after working as an Export manager and, except for his time in the USA, lived in Croydon, Surrey, his entire life until his death. This new edition of his acclaimed book marks a collective effort on the part of his two sons Christopher and the late Peter J. Miller, as well as Peter's wife, Janis Moran, to get the book back into print in time for the 70 anniversary of the ending of the Second World War.

Nothing is Impossible: A Glider Pilot's Story of Sicily, Arnhem and the Rhine Crossing is well written and gives an honest account of the experiences, thoughts and feelings of Staff Sergeant Victor Miller through some of the major operations of the Second World War. If you have read A Bridge Too Far by Cornelius Ryan you will have come across accounts by Victor Miller but Nothing is Impossible: A Glider Pilot's Story of Sicily, Arnhem and the Rhine Crossing gives you the full version of his experiences and adds depth to history. I highly recommend this book, Victor Miller’s story is riveting.

This is an interesting war memoire of a British WWII glider pilot, who spent most of his time in training, but was in the three big landings.

A great account of WW2 airborne operations as seen through the eyes of a glider pilot sergeant. I've read a lot of books and accounts of the plight of the 1st Airborne within the Oosterbeek perimeter, but Miller's account of 6 days of trench life within the vicinity of the Hartenstein Hotel is a must read for all enthusiasts of the gripping combat that was Oosterbeek in 1944.

While I found the storey facinting, not being in the war or living in the areas described, I soon got bored and did not finish the book

Not finished reading yet, but so far it has been an in depth and fascinating story. A definite must for those interested in glider pilots and the battles they fought in, particularly Arnhem.

You gain a real incite into the huge amount of resource put towards the training of the aircrew, who also double up as specialist ground troops. The fact they had to go into battle in a wooden framed aircraft without any protection from anti-aircraft munitions and lacking crash stress design is a miracle that any aircraft landed it's contents successfully. You also encounter the horror of almost continuous mortar and artillery fire on the authors location at Arnhem, unable to avoid it for 9 days.

This is the story of one man and his comrades in arms who landed by Glider in Sicily 1943 and carries the story through various well known Airborne Operations from Sicily to Arnhem and the crossing of the Rhine into Germany.
The story initially gives us great insight into the preparation for action, how the Glider Pilots did their job and the relationship with their tug transports. In particular the flight to Sicily, the landing and the action in taking their objective.
The central character spends some time describing his wounding and capture then of his release
when the land forces eventually broke through to complete the operation.
We can also come to appreciate the different tasks of these Airborne soldiers in Gliders and the Para troop's who landed independently and the land forces arriving from the sea to finish the job.
An informative story well told.
