- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2015I've been interested in hand lettering for a while. I usually write personalized messages in greeting cards so I thought the next step would be for me to design the entire card!
I thought the author Bethany had a very interesting take on teaching that I have never seen in book form. She knows her stuff. Bethany writes the letters, draws pictures and then prompts the reader to follow suite after each example. At first it felt a little grade school, but she gets down to basics. This is 101, people.
I bought this book on Kindle, but I really wish I purchased a physical copy, especially for practice. I would have liked to use this as a workbook instead of a reference guide. A couple of my favorite things covered are fake calligraphy and dimensions.
Remember when I said this felt like grade school? Well forget that, because you enter the advanced classes once Bethany covers positive and negative space. I think that section is my favorite.
There's so much to cover in this book! You can practice letters, do arts and crafts and even make gifts like a paper bouquet. I'm even going to start practicIng making logos for my future business. This book has given me a great creative outlet.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2015This is such a fun and addictive book! I love how it has so many examples of organized doodles.
The fonts in this book are made to be drawn by hand and embellished with flowers, fruits and more. I am buying a few more as gifts for my busy friends. The best part of this book is that there are pages to draw and practice. I love how my drawings add to the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2025I enjoyed this book, which had a lot of ideas to help the reader mix their own lettering with floral accents. It is a workbook with white space to practice each section so it is probably better as a physical book. It does work on a Kindle and you can do the double tap thing to zoom in on all the pictures (some are very tiny so you definitely want to zoom) The book is appropriate for young people or adults (at least junior high on up). The author also provided information on ways in which up apply your letters to things like gift tags and table settings.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2015This a great book for anyone who likes to doodle, scrapbooking, making greeting cards or gift cards, or anything crafty. These designs can be reproduced and used on bulletin boards in offices or schools. There are 12 chapters that may inspire the doodler to learn the art of lettering with step-by-step instructions. With practice, the hand lettering will become your own. You will develop your own style and add to what you learn from this author. This book could also be used to help someone who has poor penmanship. Instructions are given for each letter of the alphabet in upper and lower case. There are practice pages or use tracing paper to help make an exact copy and practice until the technique is perfected. Once this skill has been accomplished the applications are endless.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2015I am a tiny bit obsessed with hand lettering, and this book basically made my lettering dreams come true. This book teaches you the basics of lettering, starting from the different types of letterings and continuing with botanical doodles that can decorate your writing. The book provides you with step by step instructions, but with plenty of room to bring your own creativity to your work. My favorite part of the book was that it included space to doodle and practice each step of the way. I can never get my script to look as pretty as I’d like, but this book provides guides to make things look as beautiful as I’d dreamed. This book is wonderful. I can’t recommend it enough- it is SUCH a great book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2017A cute book for teenagers, young adults and people who likes flowers. I rate it 3.5 stars.
GOOD:
-The book is very interactive. It is something I would want to draw on and color later (since there are no colors in this book at all except black and white).
-I like how creative the book is. I think it is worth mentioning that the book is handwritten. Kudos for the author!
-The lettering are sexy and beautiful at the same time. These fonts are so good. Designs varies on frame, weight and dimension.
NOT SO GOOD:
-Everything is black and white, I would much appreciate a botanical book in colored version since you are buying the paperback anyway and it is not CHEAP!
-Other scripts are too intricate. Good thing there are instructions to follow for total beginners like me. Although a little subtle in my opinion.
-I wish there were more practice pages on the book.
Overall, it is a good buy.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2015I love this book!! It is so fun. I am so glad that coloring books are all the rage these days because it really is a great way to let go of stress. This hand lettering workbook is fantastic! Learning the basics of how to start a drawing is essential to anyone with an itch to paint or draw and this is a great way to learn. It really helps you learn to draw from beginning to end. The practice pages were so fun and in some cases funny [ originals where definitely better then my attempt at them ]. This book was an absolute blast! Learning to do a variety of different things from plants to letters was just such a blast. Stop and smell the roses.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2016A clear, cute, book of cartoon-like examples of flower, plant and leaf decorative elements and hand lettering. I think the word "botanical"--which makes me think of exacting, realistic illustration--can be confusing here. The title clearly has "whimsical" in it, and it is just that. There are pages to practice, which I find practical. The pages are decorated, and the decorations keep you focused on whimsical and cute.
If you are a traditional calligrapher working in pointed brush and parallel pen and looking to polish up your majuscule skills, this is not your book. If you want to learn some joyous hand-lettering through practice, this book will put you on the right track.
There are many examples, which I find helpful. The best way (for me) to use the book is work through it, following the lessons, then strike out on your own to put your own aesthetic into your work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ce livre est génial
