Deborah, Old Testament judge and prophet, is the focus of the second book in prolific author Smith's (The Crimson Cord) Daughters of the Promised Land series. The story opens when Deborah, obeying her father's instruction to return home, is given in marriage to Lappidoth. In this tumultuous time, Sisera, a Canaanite, is terrorizing the Israelites. After their marriage Deborah has trouble respecting her husband because he tends the fields and works as a scribe, refusing to train as a warrior and fight Sisera. Ten years later however, after hearing a message from God, Lappidoth offers to teach Deborah how to read and write in order to fulfill her God-given role as prophetess. Smith entwines Deborah's story with the story of Barak, the leader of another clan who wants vengeance against Sisera. The telling of the two strands reads unevenly, with the formal, Biblical dialogue slowing the pace, especially in contrast ato the colloquial feel of the larger narrative. Smith, however, brings astute observation to the inner conflicts Deborah feels about Talya, her "beautiful, obstinate daughter," about her role as prophetess, and about her feelings toward Lappidoth. While she loves writing and researching, she is willingly interrupted by her west-coast children and adorable grandchildren. Traveling to Israel was a highlight of her life, but traveling west is her new favorite vacation location. When she’s not packing her bags, she can be found reading stories that take her away, playing too many games and puzzles on her phone (call it down time), or snuggling her lovable, mischievous cats Kody and Kaelee. She has been married to the love of her life for 47 years and counting and lives in a quiet neighborhood in southeast Michigan.

    It is only the creativity and inspiration from God that a story with SO LITTLE detail in the Bible can be woven into such a inspirational novel. It was a beautifully told story and the lesson that stands out for me the most is to continually search my heart to make sure I have not turned anything into a idol stealing the devotion and worship that only belongs my God. We have to be watchful and tear down/ crush any idol in our lives. Idolatry has great and grave consequences. We see this picture clearly in The Prophetess!!!

    I also love how Jill showed Deborah gifting from God being developed and nurtured at a young age.

    I was intrigued by a tale set in this ancient time and read the promo material with great interest which led me to believe that this would truly help me understand the period better. I was quite disappointed. The possibility of a village remaining hidden in the woods, undetected by Sisera for TWENTY YEARS (the length of time he harassed Israel) in a geographical area as small as Palestine is so laughably improbable that it was really hard to be drawn into the fear of that biblical crisis. They had to remind the children to be quiet lest one of Sisera's men hear them and discover their village? Pleeeeze. Might work for a few weeks. At about 50 miles wide max, a man could easily walk across it in what, 12 hours? Sisera's army had chariots and horses. Surely, they crisscrossed every inch of that land in their twenty-year domination.

    Secondly, Deborah was too whiney a protagonist for me to ever really care about. One would expect a prophetess to have a little more insight into others, to be a wiser woman who would learn to value her husband's good qualities sooner than the decades it took. I slogged on to the end and did find some redeeming scenes, but those two detractors were pretty overwhelming to me.

    The author has given a woman with such short biblical history a more in depth life. This is really well written and makes you look at current wars happening now, you can easily imagine the times of judges. What it must feel living in fear and no hope? Being a woman and called to lead when all have given up hope. Only by God anointing was she able to do his work. God doesn't discriminate and is able to use anyone regardless of their background . Great inspiration to know that we are able to go through anything, because God strengthen us.
