The Prophetess (Daughters of the Promised Land Book #2): Deborah's Story Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 867 ratings

Outspoken and fearless, Deborah has faith in God but struggles to see the potential her own life holds. As an Israelite woman, she'll marry, have a family, and seek to teach her children about Adonai--and those tasks seem to be more than enough to occupy her time. But God has another plan for her. Israel has been under the near constant terror of Canaan's armies for twenty years, and now God has called Deborah to deliver her people from this oppression. Will her family understand? Will her people even believe God's calling on her life? And can the menace of Canaan be stopped?

With her trademark impeccable research and her imaginative storytelling, Jill Eileen Smith brings to life the story of Israel's most powerful woman in a novel that is both intriguing and inspiring.

From Publishers Weekly

Deborah, Old Testament judge and prophet, is the focus of the second book in prolific author Smith's (The Crimson Cord) Daughters of the Promised Land series. The story opens when Deborah, obeying her father's instruction to return home, is given in marriage to Lappidoth. In this tumultuous time, Sisera, a Canaanite, is terrorizing the Israelites. After their marriage Deborah has trouble respecting her husband because he tends the fields and works as a scribe, refusing to train as a warrior and fight Sisera. Ten years later however, after hearing a message from God, Lappidoth offers to teach Deborah how to read and write in order to fulfill her God-given role as prophetess. Smith entwines Deborah's story with the story of Barak, the leader of another clan who wants vengeance against Sisera. The telling of the two strands reads unevenly, with the formal, Biblical dialogue slowing the pace, especially in contrast ato the colloquial feel of the larger narrative. Smith, however, brings astute observation to the inner conflicts Deborah feels about Talya, her "beautiful, obstinate daughter," about her role as prophetess, and about her feelings toward Lappidoth. This is both a well-drawn love story as well as the wistful imaginings of early Israel. (Feb.)\n

From the Back Cover

"At last, the mystical figure of Deborah comes to life! Jill Eileen Smith gives vivid voice to the women at the center of Israel's victory over Canaan. A tale of strength and faith that bears relevance even today. Not to be missed!"--Tosca Lee, "New York Times" bestselling author

Canaan has ravaged Israel. The people are in hiding. All that stands between surrender and hope is one untested woman.
Deborah will never forget the day her father and brothers left to worship at the Lord's tabernacle--or the wails of her mother after finding their bodies at the city gates. The memories of Canaan's cruelty haunt her and all of Israel. Now in this dark time, the Lord calls on Deborah to lead His people away from the idols of other nations and back to Him.
Deborah never asked to be a prophetess or a judge over God's people. Still, she cannot deny His voice or the visions that accompany it. Can her family ever understand? Will her people believe God's calling on her life? And can the Canaanite menace be stopped?
With her trademark impeccable research and imaginative storytelling, Jill Eileen Smith brings to life the story of Israel's most powerful woman in this intriguing and inspiring novel.

Biblical Characters That Touch Your Heart
"The Prophetess" is a remarkable book that does more than make Biblical characters come to life - the story by this remarkable author touches our very hearts in its retelling by this gifted narrator. I find the story inspiring for even in my own life as I read it, I am questioning the will of God in my own life. The story seems authentic and lifelike, perhaps because the characters are very real in the way that they evolve and change over time, in the way that they reveal their faults and either change - or not. I love the way that even the chief characters who - like the rest of mankind - sometimes have doubts about God's presence in their life when storm clouds of uncertainty and adversity hover overhead. Jill Eileen Smith makes characters of faith come to life, not only teaching us of the Biblical characters and making them seem human, but showing how God works through them despite their faults and weaknesses. This book seems truly inspired and led by a person with the eyes and heart of faith. Now more than ever, we need stories of faith such as this for a very troubled world. I look forward to more audio book versions by this great author and gifted narrator.

Having been told all my life I was named after the OT Deborah, I've always been curious about her & jumped on this book when I found it. Seeing an OT woman in leadership is rare. It was a vivid story about Israels's fight for freedom & Sisera's reign of terror among her people, Deborah's role in securing their freedom, & ultimately God's victory. It was a great read. I highly recommend it!!

Jill Eileen Smith manages to weave the true biblical account of Israel's only female judge into a rich and interesting story! I read it in 2 days, I just couldn't put it down. Walk with Deborah around her little village and take in the sights and sounds of what it must have been like to live so long ago. Sit with her as she delves out the mercy and judgement of the Almighty. Feel her pain as a mother of adult children and get ready to feel completely captivated by Smith's supporting cast of characters as they all face their fears and deal with the threat of terrorism as their doorstep. Smith uses a imagery and imagination based on the Bible story found in Judges. Yes buy this book and read it -- it is rich and full of profound truths we can understand and take to heart!

It is only the creativity and inspiration from God that a story with SO LITTLE detail in the Bible can be woven into such a inspirational novel. It was a beautifully told story and the lesson that stands out for me the most is to continually search my heart to make sure I have not turned anything into a idol stealing the devotion and worship that only belongs my God. We have to be watchful and tear down/ crush any idol in our lives. Idolatry has great and grave consequences. We see this picture clearly in The Prophetess!!!

I also love how Jill showed Deborah gifting from God being developed and nurtured at a young age.

I was intrigued by a tale set in this ancient time and read the promo material with great interest which led me to believe that this would truly help me understand the period better. I was quite disappointed. The possibility of a village remaining hidden in the woods, undetected by Sisera for TWENTY YEARS (the length of time he harassed Israel) in a geographical area as small as Palestine is so laughably improbable that it was really hard to be drawn into the fear of that biblical crisis. They had to remind the children to be quiet lest one of Sisera's men hear them and discover their village? Pleeeeze. Might work for a few weeks. At about 50 miles wide max, a man could easily walk across it in what, 12 hours? Sisera's army had chariots and horses. Surely, they crisscrossed every inch of that land in their twenty-year domination.

Secondly, Deborah was too whiney a protagonist for me to ever really care about. One would expect a prophetess to have a little more insight into others, to be a wiser woman who would learn to value her husband's good qualities sooner than the decades it took. I slogged on to the end and did find some redeeming scenes, but those two detractors were pretty overwhelming to me.

The author has given a woman with such short biblical history a more in depth life. This is really well written and makes you look at current wars happening now, you can easily imagine the times of judges. What it must feel living in fear and no hope? Being a woman and called to lead when all have given up hope. Only by God anointing was she able to do his work. God doesn't discriminate and is able to use anyone regardless of their background . Great inspiration to know that we are able to go through anything, because God strengthen us.

I appreciate the way that Jill approaches the story Deborah, her integrity when it comes to the biblical story, and her artfulness when dealing with intimate moments between lovers. I also enjoyed the way Jill draws and holds you in another time period, in another part of the world, so foreign to where I live, and yet the timeless truths of values and principles are so eloquently brought out. Jill is a wonderful story teller.

I was in awe through the entire book thinking about how God shows His strength through our weakness. Rather than using a strong warrior, He chose to use a lowly wife. Oh to be used of God like that today!! I also loved the closing of the book and the joy of the bride while waiting for her bridegroom. Even so come Lord Jesus! Absolutely loved this book!
