A woman’s homecoming is met with death threats, a treacherous killer, and a legendary monster in this supernatural thriller series opener.

Behind a legend lies the truth . . .

As a child, Eve Parrish lost her father and her best friend, Maggie Flynn, in a tragic bridge collapse. Fifteen years later, she returns to Point Pleasant to settle her deceased aunt’s estate. When Eve uncovers startling information about her aunt’s death, that legend is in danger of becoming all too real . . .

Caden Flynn is one of the few lucky survivors of the bridge collapse but blames himself for coercing his younger sister out that night. I’m fascinated by cryptozoology and grew up not too far from West Virginia, where the legend of the Mothman and this story occur. So when I heard this book, written by an author whose other work I’ve enjoyed, was available for preorder, I immediately placed mine. I was so sad that I was too busy to read it the day it was released. But the second I had a chance, I sat down to read it. And I read it in one sitting. I was captivated. I couldn’t put it down until I’d read every last word.

A Thousand Yesteryears follows Eve Parrish, who returns to Point Pleasant when her aunt dies. She’s inherited more than just her aunt’s properties—she’s inherited mystery and danger, as well. Vandalism, threats, animal mutilation—it’s a good thing the boy next door used to be a cop. He also used to be the boy she had a crush on. Fifteen years later, those feelings come rushing back. And he returns them. Mixed up in the modern day mystery is the fifteen-year-old Mothman legend, the tragedy of the bridge collapse, and the disappearance of a reportedly “easy” girl. How the mysteries of fifteen years earlier and those of the current time period intersect are chilling. And the author ties it all together brilliantly.

Mae Clair weaves a masterful story full of well-conceived plot points. Her characters are three-dimensional and realistic, lovely people you want to meet and have dinner with (or sadistic villains you want to run from even in a sunny park or crowded church). The settings come to life, much more than sights but also sounds and smells. I relived the eighties through this work. And the ending is satisfying, yet is open-ended enough to so we can revisit these characters and this world again.

And I, for one, am looking forward to doing just that.

A very enjoyable fictional take on the true reports of the Mothman sightings in Point Pleasant, West Virginia and the bridge collapse back in the ‘60s. Mae Clair weaves a story that grabbed me from the beginning and did not disappoint at the end. I really enjoyed her writing style as well. Having visited Point Pleasant for the annual Mothman Festival a few times, it all seemed familiar to me, as though I was pulled into the story along with the rest of the characters. Great job Mae!

Mae Clair’s very shivery novel is set in a town still trying desperately to recover from the terrible tragedy that caused Eve Parrish and her mother to abandon their home, friends, and family for nearly fifteen years. Upon Eve’s return, she discovers, among other things, that the legend of Mothman still hangs over the town, as well, and believe me, it adds an unexpected dimension to this tale of buried secrets and soul-crushing guilt.

As a fan of Appalachian folklore, I’ve read about Mothman many times, but have to give kudos to Mae Clair for her skillful rendition of what I originally thought was a pretty silly concept. In her able hands, it most definitely is not silly. In fact, I can’t wait for the next book to find out more. In addition to the continuing story of the Eve’s future plans and growing relationship with her childhood crush, Caden Flynn, the mystery of who, or what, Mothman actually is, just might get laid to rest. I’m dying to learn exactly what the title of the book only hints at.

If you like your mysteries filled with evil aplenty of the human kind, and a touch of what might be something supernatural . . . or not . . . you should definitely check out A Thousand Yesteryears. And may I add, it’s always a pleasure to read a well constructed, well-edited, and solidly written book like this. I will be following along with this story, and will definitely continue reading more of Mae Clair’s work.

A Thousand Yesteryears is the first book in the Point Pleasant series, but somehow I read books two and three before it. Guess that answers your question about reading them in order. Each can serve as a standalone but share many of the same characters.

I’ve read several novels by this author, and she has such a talent for creating characters you love or hate. These are no exception. You want Eve to grapple with her tragic past, put it behind her, and settle her deceased aunt’s estate – and maybe even take over the hotel left to her and stay in town. You want Caden to realize he’s not responsible for the death of his sister and shed the blame he carries about that night. You also have a deep desire for the killer who ended the lives of their friends and family to get what’s coming to them because these characters feel like your own family.

Of all the subgenres of suspense, supernatural suspense is my favorite. I’m always a fan of the otherworldly, and basing a series on the Mothman and setting the story in the town where he was reportedly seen intrigues me even more. Is he a good guy or a bad guy? He makes appearances in this novel, so you’ll have to decide for yourself.

Small towns, long held secrets, sweet romances, dark mysteries, and strong characterization make this series a must read and will enthrall supernatural suspense fans. The Mothman is just a bonus.

5.0 out of 5 stars "A Thousand Yesteryears" is a brilliant piece of work, worthy of best-seller status!

After reading "Eclipse Lake" by Mae Clair, I became an instant fan of her work and brilliant writing style.
Mrs. Clair’s writing is flawless as she weaves elements of paranormal, mystery, suspense, and romance, taking readers on an impressive journey. "A Thousand Yesteryears" is a brilliant piece of work, worthy of best-seller status.
Eve Parrish was just a child when she lost her father and her best friend, Maggie Flynn, in the Sliver Bridge collapse. When she returns to Point Pleasant, fifteen years later, it becomes clear that the passage of time hasn’t healed all wounds, and the town of her youth has changed. Soon after she arrives back in town, to settle the affairs of her recently deceased Aunt Rosie, a body is found on the grounds that hold the legend of the Mothman.
Point Pleasant has secrets and unsolved mysteries, and Eve's deceased aunt has hidden the key to solving the mystery that will reveal many truths. What ensues is a spectacular unraveling of secrets. Eve reconnects with old friends and becomes friends with an old acquaintance, and together they try to piece together accounts, based on speculation, paranormal activity, and pure gut instinct.
Once again, the character development is superb, and the pace is perfect - fast and intense! "A Thousand Yesteryears" has it all, and I highly recommend it!

I want to preface this review with this statement; I am a writer, not a book reviewer so bear with me!

A Thousand Yesteryears by Mae Clair

5 stars

I absolutely loved 'Yesteryears'.

Author Mae Clair takes home five stars from me with this supernatural / mystery story. Five stars for attention to detail, compelling plot, likeable characters, and a compelling story setting.

I am not usually a mystery genre reader, so Clair's task to entertain me was truly formidable, but within the first two chapters I was hooked. The setting and location of 'Yesteryears' sucked me in straight away; mid 1980s small town USA. The addition of a classic 50s style horror noir monster, The Mothman, clinched the deal. I knew I was going to like this book.

Clair introduces her believable and likable characters early in the piece and promptly surrounds them with mystery and intrigue. The plot is woven masterfully in Clair's capable hands, and leaves the reader guessing as to who and why right up to the end.

My favourite element of 'Yesteryears' are the relationships that develop between the characters; an unlikely friendship and a sweet romance. At no time do these relationships feel forced, rather they mature naturally throughout the story and promote the mystery plot rather than hinder it.

I thoroughly enjoyed 'A Thousand Yesteryears' and highly recommend this story to any fan of mysteries, supernatural or paranormal thrillers, or anyone wanting a good, solid read.

On 15th December 1967, when it was crammed with rush hour traffic, the Silver Bridge collapsedr, taking forty-six lives. Eve Parrish, little more than a child, watched the bridge as it crumpled and fell, taking her father down into the watery prison of the Ohio River.
Point Pleasant, the town on the West Virginia side of the bridge, is Eve’s home, but after the disaster her mother moves to Harrisburgh, and Eve will not return for fifteen years, when she is called upon to wind up her aunt’s estate. Unsuspecting, she stumbles into a web of intrigue and mystery surrounding her aunt and a supposedly mythical creature known as the Mothman.
This story gets its foot on the gas early and does not relent until the final page, so pack lunch and enjoy the excitement of the ride. Author Mae Clair’s characters fit perfectly into the small town culture of Point Pleasant, and she guides you around the twists and turns of the plot with fluent ease. I was captivated. Now I have read it I will miss it, but I have the consolation of knowing there will be more in this series. Watch this space!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great start to a series

Eve Parrish returns to Point Pleasant fifteen years after the tragic bridge collapse that claimed many lives, including that of her father and her best friend Maggie.

After the accident, Eve’s mother decided a fresh start was needed and she moved with Eve far enough away to help forget the events of that night.

But now Aunt Rosie has died and left her house and the Parrish Hotel to Eve and so Eve has travelled alone back to her home town, to decide what to do with her inheritance.
Her first instincts are to sell and return back to her new home as soon as possible. The town has changed, weighed down under its reputation as a place of tragedy. But there are plenty of people that Eve still knows, the Flynn brothers, Caden and Ryan, .their mother Mrs Flynn and Katie Lynch whose sister Wendy disappeared. Events soon begin to take an ominous turn and conspire to keep Eve back in her old home.

This murder mystery; what really happened to Maggie and to Wendy Lynch, is woven into the paranormal tale of the bridge collapse and the legend of the Mothman, a creature said to roam the swampy area just out of town. Plenty of local people believe in the Mothman and some have seen it. Despite her early doubts, Eve begins to wonder if maybe the Mothman really does exist and if Maggie is trying to help catch a murderer from beyond the grave.

With a bit of romance thrown, in this is a great start to a series and a fluent, easy read.

This book as it was recommended to me by a friend. I am trying to discover new author's work and read genres that I wouldn't normally pick up, as I am usually an avid romance reader.
A Thousand Yesteryears is not only a thrilling mystery story which is packed full of beautifully written characters, but has an underlying romance throughout too. I found myself grabbing my kindle whenever I could, to catch up with what was happening next. I wasn't disappointed and enjoyed every moment of this author's work. Packed full with tension, intrigue and historical details, this book has it all!
