Long Legs and Tall Tales: A Showgirl's Wacky, Sexy Journey to the Playboy Mansion and the Radio City Rockettes Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 34 ratings

Long Legs and Tall Tales is a comic memoir about a naïve, goodie two-shoes, Midwesterner who tosses aside her conservative business suit and college education, leaves the safety of suburbia behind, and hesitantly sets off to become an international, sexy showgirl supreme. Follow her into her dressing rooms around the globe, as she learns to survive and then thrive (in stilettos, no less) in the wild and wonderful world of entertainment. With a virtual VIP All-Access Backstage Pass, readers get a sneak insider peek into two of America’s most iconically sexy and spectacular institutions—Playboy and the Radio City Rockettes—like never before. But wait! There’s more. The book also chronicles highlights of Kristi’s wacky journey from obscurity to fame including:

*her humble tutu and tiara-loving beginnings at her local “Dolly Dinkle” dance schools
*her awkward stretch into modern dance amid the danger and excitement of New York City
*mortifying corporate party performances (including dancing as half of the Brooklyn Bridge and knocking over patrons with her big buttress)
*musical theatre and movie escapades in and around Hollywood
*homespun fun in the Ozarks as Buddy Ebsen’s hottie Beverly Hillbillies sidekick
*jet-setting and bar-hopping with real live Playboy Bunnies
*her horror at sashaying on stage in a G-string
*going overboard for love on a cruise ship, and
*shaking her tail feathers for President Bill Clinton.

From the sweaty, smoky nightclubs of Singapore to the sizzling Las Vegas strip to the snowcapped mountains of Alaska and beyond, these behind-the-scenes, high-kicking high jinks rival the euphoria of thunderous applause. Having spent over 12 years strutting her stuff as a professional entertainer, including logging in over 1,200 performances (and 240,000 kicks) as a Rockette and touring overseas with the steamy Playboy’s Girls of Rock & Roll, Kristi has juicy secrets and shenanigans to spill. Through stories of her sparkling success despite mortifying missteps, the book aims to inspire readers to light their spark, pursue their passion, and shine brightly as the stars they truly are.

Kristi Lynn Davis is the voice (and the legs) behind the book Long Legs and Tall Tales: A Showgirl’s Wacky, Sexy Journey to the Playboy Mansion and the Radio City Rockettes. Having logged in approximately 1,200 performances and 240,000 kicks as a Radio City Rockette, she learned what it’s like to live life as a showgirl supreme. But strutting her stuff for the world’s most famous precision dance troupe was just the tip of the iceberg. She also traveled the globe with the steamy Playboy’s Girls of Rock and Roll, sailed to exotic ports of call as a singer-dancer on luxurious cruise ships, and graced the stage in musical theatre productions with showbiz icons Susan Anton, Buddy Ebsen, Maurice Hines, Jack Jones, Paige O’Hara, Juliet Prowse, Rip Taylor, and others. She even shook her tail feathers for former President Bill Clinton.

In addition to being an author, Kristi is a speaker, entertainer, choreographer, and drama therapist. As a trainer and coach, she works with individuals and organizations who desire to dream bigger and think and act more creatively. Pairing her professional background in show business with extensive graduate studies in psychology, drama therapy, and psychoneuroimmunology, Kristi offers a unique, holistic, creative approach to helping people activate the power of the mind, body, and spirit. She particularly enjoys inspiring audiences to entertain new thoughts that will mess with stress, kick out obstacles, and “Rockette” them into spectacular success. In her signature keynote speech, Kick high! Be spectacular!: Showgirl Secrets to Tap into Your Potential and Get a Kick Out of Life, Kristi transforms into a Rockette right before your eyes as she shares stories of sparkling success and fortuitous “failure” from her rocky journey into showbiz, to assist you in discovering your dreams, dancing with fear, and becoming the star you truly are. Kristi thrives in the beautiful state of Michigan with her wacky, sexy husband and two spectacular children.

Unless you happen to live in the echelon that would get you on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous or travel abroad for a living there is a good chance trips you take don't last more than a week or two. Sure you might hit an exotic destination along the way, bounce across a few time zones or learn the basics of a new language, but would you be inspired and passionate enough to turn one of those trips into a life's work? Kristi was!!!

Sit down, fasten your seat belt - not always an option for Kristi - and brace yourself for a global hop the most seasoned travel agent couldn't whip up! And oh yeah, the best part - you get the frontal view from backstage - literally.

I loved this book for it's vivid, imaginative descriptions of wherever Kristi went and of whatever she was doing as well as Kristi's time travel and the beautiful things that happen when she walked, ran and sprinted me through her dancing career. Kristi writes what she is thinking and when required leaves enough clues so even the most Sherlock Holmes challenged can fill in the blanks.

I LOL'd throughout the book. I appreciated the depth to which Kristi let's us into her personal relationships - especially with her fellow dancers and colleagues - and I picked up a real cool life lesson to boot - add one more high kick to Kristi's lifetime tally! I can't say enough about the name dropping either. Of course it ain't name dropping if you can back it up...WOW!

I hope you enjoy your trip as much as I enjoyed mine!

It brought back so many memories of my career : Rockette at Radio City Music Hall, getting into two Broadway shows and running away with an Argentinian circus to be a showgirl, dancer and magicians assistant. So many inside performers shtick recalled. Dealing with the animals (bet you didn't have a blind berserk camel who peed all over the orchestra and then Sat down refusing to move requiring a whole number danced around him!) I loved this book to hear your stories, remind me of mine, and I know they will inspire young girls with stars in their eyes. I found the lessons I learned as a performer stood me in good stead as I moved into more corporate work. Nobody has a better work ethic than a current or past Rockette! Working with Russell Markert and Violet Holmes were career highlights. Thank you for writing a book for those of us who have been there. And thank you for writing it for others who yearn to be. And for those just wondered what it would have been like. That sparkle that is part of your DNA will find creative outlets all you life. And even when you're old, you'll find ways to add shiny things to whatever you do. You'll always be a dancer in your soul. To the Rockette Sisterhood!

As someone who was coming up in the biz around the same time as Kristi, I found this memoir full of all the recognizable fun, wildness, and uncertainty of a life in entertainment. Her adventurous spirit, her disciplined work, her brushes with fame, and everything in between were very entertaining in their own right.

If you were or weren't in show business yourself, you'll find it eye-opening and full of the nostalgia of an innocent abroad, of a Midwesterner thrust into the chaos and toughness of the dance world and coming out wiser, more confident, and more at peace on the other side.

I laughed, I nodded in recognition, and it ultimately left me with a smile on my face.

Kristi Davis will grab you, drag you into her world of show-biz, and will leave you screaming, MORE, MORE, MORE!!! Her colorful phrasing, bedazzling story, and inspirational message isn't just for the theater crowd. Believe me, her message is for anyone with a dream to do more, be more, contribute more - and not sure what it takes to get there. Kristi's memoir will light the way as she shares the ups and downs, the triumphs and defeats, the joys and sorrows that make the journey to achievement worth the trip. By the time you reach the end, you'll love Kristi, you'll love what possible for your own life, and you'll love that you have everything it takes to get you there - as long as you are willing to do the work. Do yourself and others a favor. Buy it. Read it. Share it. You'll be so glad you did!

Kristi has written a fascinating account of her life as a dancer. She describes with candor how she managed to dance across the US and the World. I admire her ability to reinvent herself despite inevitable setbacks. Sometimes, I had to ask myself how one person could have possibly lived such a thrilling and adventurous life! :) I would highly recommend this memoir to anyone who loves to dance. It certainly inspired me to keep moving gracefully toward my dreams, even if I may stumble.

I guffawed my way thru this memoir. Snorted with laughter. It is clever and engaging and honest. I have to admit I am not entirely objective since I am the real friend Jenny. However I am not an easy critic even when it comes to people I love and adore.

This is a true glimpse into the world of a young woman with a dream. Who follows it. Who lives it. Who shares it. The glamour, the glory, and the grime.

And there really is only one way to eat pizza and every New Yorker knows that I am right.
