Black Man, White House: An Oral History of the Obama Years Kindle Edition

New York Times Bestseller (Humor)

"The book everyone is laughing about!"--Joe Scarborough, Morning Joe

From legendary comedian D.L. Hughley comes a bitingly funny send-up of the Obama years, as “told” by the key political players on both sides of the aisle.

What do the Clintons, Republicans, fellow Democrats, and Obama’s own family really think of President Barack Obama? Finally, the truth is revealed in this raucously funny “oral history” parody.

There is no more astute—and hilarious—critic of politics, entertainment, and race in America than D. L. Hughley, famed comedian, radio star, and original member of the “Kings of Comedy.” In the vein of Jon Stewart’s America: The Book, Black Man, White House is an acerbic and witty take on Obama’s two terms, looking at the president’s accomplishments and foibles through the imagined eyes of those who saw history unfold.

Hughley draws upon satirical interviews with the most notorious public figures of our day: Mitt Romney (“What’s ‘poverty’? Is that some sort of rap jargon?”); Nancy Pelosi (“I play F**k/Marry/Kill, and there’s a lot more kills than fu**ks in Congress, believe me.”); Rod Blagojevich (“You can’t sell political offices on eBay; I discovered that personally.”); Joe Biden (“I like wrestling.”); and other politicians, media pundits, and buffoons. It is sure to be the most irreverent—and perhaps the most honest—look at American politics today.

Review

The book everyone is laughing about.

-- "Morning Joe"

The Obama years, through a glass cleverly. In this faux oral history of the Barack Obama administration, comedian and actor Hughley consistently amuses and provides a nifty pocket history of the first African-American president's tenure. Bill and Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Mitt Romney, Nancy Pelosi, Dick Cheney, John McCain, Rahm Emanuel, Mitch McConnell, David Axelrod, and a host of other (slightly) fictionalized key political figures recount Obama's path from charismatic rising star of the Democratic Party to two-term commander in chief in impressive detail...The humor functions on a higher level than the expected potshots...But it is Michelle's voice that will stick most with readers: wise, rueful, and human, telling the incredible story of an unprecedented moment in American politics and race relations. Funny, insightful, and legitimately illuminating.

-- "Kirkus Reviews"

The four narrators will have listeners cracking up throughout this comedic look at America's first black president. You've never heard a presidential biography like this one...Listeners are also treated to interior monologues from nearly every major figure in American politics as he or she weighs in on topics ranging from Obama's senate election to his life in the White House. The voices that represent well-known people such as Joe Biden and Bill and Hillary Clinton are fully recognizable as delivered by the cast. Winner of the AudioFile Earphones and a finalist for the 2017 Audie Award for Best Humor Narration.

From the Back Cover

For two centuries, presidents hoping to secure their legacies have sought out biographers. But who could possibly capture the inspiring yet bizarre reality of the first black man to call the White House his crib, a tenure that brought hope, change, and health care to millions, but also spawned birthers, backlash, and the bewildering rise of Donald Trump? Thankfully, as the end of President Barack Obama’s pioneering two terms in office drew near, the First Lady had a stroke of genius: “Honey, all these presidential biographies are written by old white guys. Why not hook a brother up for once?”

Enter D.L. Hughley. When the comedy legend got the call from the Obamas, he knew this was the assignment of a lifetime. And so D.L. proudly raised his finger to “The System”* and set out to record a true and accurate** oral history of the Obama years. Protected by the Patriot Act and the promise of a presidential pardon, Hughley bitch-slapped virtually every rule of journalism in pursuit of his mission: hacking into Hillary Clinton’s private e-mail server; infiltrating Trump’s tanning sessions; even eavesdropping on Bill Clinton’s late-night escapades.

Black Man, White House is the culmination of these extraordinary comedic efforts, an authoritative work on the Obama presidency that is destined to enlighten and entertain patriots, scholars, and Yes-We-Can’ers for generations to come.

Hughley mixes "barnyard language" with a very intelligent and thought-provoking commentary on Obama and his presidency. It reads as an oral transcript. Even though though the "quotes' are fictitious, I felt as though these various people would have said very similar things

Who knew D.L. Hughley could write? I purchased this book after seeing the author talking about it on Tavis Smiley. It is irreverent, and extremely funny. The book is about white house conversations coming from the Obama Administration, and others. Purely fictional, it is Hughley's characterization and imagination of day to day conversations between the President and others. This thing is funny as all he!!. I can';t recommend it enough.

It really did feel like an oral history. Some of the voices were spot on and felt authentic. Michelle Obama, Rahm Emanuel and Joe Biden in particular. Others were written a bit too over the top to fit. Hillary Clinton being the prime disappointment. there were also parts that fell a little flat. Enjoyable but not a classic.

Fantastic read. I saw Mr. Hughley's interview on Morning Joe and decided I needed to get this book. You probably have to follow current events and politics to really appreciate the fine work he's done. The comments made by the individuals in the book just rings so true. IMO, Hughley really nailed it.

I saw D. L. Hughley on the PBS Tavis Smiley show talking about this book and laughed the entire half-hour (as did Hughley and Smiley). After serving in a mid-level political position years ago, this satire captured so many truths. Hughley's use of Rahm Emmanuel and his profanity is hilarious, and his portrayal of Michelle Obama as the adult in the room is very effective to set things up.

I've never ready political satire before - this book is hysterical. Brought back some good memories of things I had forgotten from Obama's Senate days and initial election. Halfway through it now, and looking forward to the rest.
