A Tour of the Bulge Battlefields (Battleground Special) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 86 ratings

A fascinating photographic trip through the site of the last great battle of World War II.

Most Americans are patriotic, their interest in World War Two having been stimulated by such movies as
Saving Private Ryan. Hundreds of thousands are the descendants of men who saw service in the Battle of the Bulge. This battle still holds the record for the highest number of American troops engaged in any single pitched battle in the history of the United States Army. Americans of the postwar generations are taking an interest in what their fathers and grandfathers did during the war. Those whose relatives served in the Ardennes often visit Belgium and Luxembourg in an attempt to learn more about those now legendary days of World War Two. This guidebook serves as a memorial to those who served. It will enable those who didn’t to learn something about the hardship endured by a previous generation in the name of freedom.

Nice memory from this time last year! I spent 4 days on the west side of the Battle of the Bulge by rental car. This book is spot on. Author knew what to look for and everything was easy to find. Pictures were helpful. I liked the battle descriptions too. People in the area were extremely friendly. I'm retired military and it was an easy commute from Spangdalm AB in Germany where I stayed at the base hotel. Also went to Bitburg. The German Army had a lot of armor staged there for the attack. There is a beer brewery there called Bitburger. Highly recommended.

We are planning a trip to this battlefield next year and I think with the information in this book and our vehicle we are going to be able to see most of the highlights - it reads like an auto tour guide yet is packed with great unit in formation. The epilogue to the book detailing the recovery of MIAs in the 1990s and in the 2000s gives modern day relevance to this battle

I was a battlefield tour guide in Europe for over three years. One of our most popular tours was the Ardennes Offensive aka "The Battle of the Bulge". Since we only had a day, we would drive up from Luxembourg City, paralleling the 3rd Army's relief route, and tour the Bastogne perimeter. If I had this book, I would've recommended this to my customers who wished to visit other sites of the battle. "A Tour of the Bulge Battlefield" is designed for the tourist who wishes to tour the battlefield(s) for himself/herself. Well researched and written, one could almost use this book as a secondary source in itself. The six chapters cover the entire battle, from the north around Stavelot, to the south in the Ettlebruch/Diekirch area. Each chapter is in itself an excellent capsulation of the battle and movements, both German and American. However, this is not a guidebook in the traditional sense, there is nothing about lodging, and very little regarding food, and other questions most tourists have. Also, what few maps there are inadequate, surprising considering this book is designed for auto-touring.

If you get several maps, the excellent Michelin series comes to mind, plus a traditional guidebook, and some `net research regarding transport, renting a car in Belgium/Luxembourg/Germany, this book would make for an outstanding historical vacation.

Using it right now! Great guide, though a few driving directions are confusing to follow. Some of the referenced sites have gone unfound (not sure if due to poor directions or removed by locals, etc.). The history and associated personal anecdotes are great. Highly recommend this guide.

Good guide to the region. Maps are always so difficult to find for these small villages. In my reading, it helps to see the regions being discussed in order to appreciate the written word. Purchased this as an advance review of my upcoming trip to Belgium and Luxembourg.

Need a map of the battlefield in order to follow the described actions. Can't follow with a Kindle those in the book. Images are too small.

Directions can be hard to follow. Better detailed maps of the route would help.

A historical tour can be purchased at a cost, or you can research yourself. A This is a great book to help if you are going to do the Battle of the Bulge. The Ardennes is a beautiful area to explor and this helps you visit the important locations.

Muy denso de contenido con amplias descripciones y multitud de datos con fotos blanco-negro, mejor sería tipo manual y fotos color. Bien para los que somos forofos de este tema.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth having if you're visiting the Ardennes.

I bought this this for reference when travelling with a Military History group to the Ardennes
this April. Since most of the fighting was between the U.S. and German armies, references
to the British involvement were understandably few.
Fully informed and well written, giving detailed accounts of the campaign over that vicious winter of '44/'45.

Not been through the whole book but I have selected one or two aspects that are of interest to me. Pretty comprehensive look at present day appearances of the sites involved.
