Dear Mrs. Turkey,

Thanksgiving Day is one of my most favorite holidays! Of course, you are the “star” that day in lots of places in the United States, and you sure do taste great, but a turkey is not what Thanksgiving Day is truly about. Thanksgiving is made up of two words---“thanks” and “giving”---and that’s what my letter to you explains.

I’m a kid who loves to eat. And what’s the best day of the year to eat, and eat, and EAT? You guessed it---Thanksgiving Day!

On that day, a lot of our family members and friends come to our house. From early in the morning until late at night, we eat. . .and Eat. . .AND EAT. And right at the center of attention is the turkey! My mom rubs some special seasoning on it the night before. Then, she wakes up early in the morning to put it in the oven to bake slowly. All day we smell it cooking, along with the trimmings of mashed potatoes, yams, gravy, and corn. I think my favorite part is the amazing desserts---pies, sweetbreads, cookies, and lots of other goodies! You name it and we probably have it to eat that day. I gobble down so much food that my belly gets S-O-O-O F-U-L-L! Wow! I’m getting hungry right now just thinking about it as I write this letter to you!

By the way, did you notice that I wrote the word “gobble” just now? Ha ha! That was smart of me, wasn’t it, since turkeys are known for making “gobble” noises.

It’s awesome that you provide such yummy food for us to eat, Mrs. Turkey. And from what I just said of our Thanksgiving Day, it certainly seems that the celebration of this wonderful holiday is all about you. But even though you are a very special part (that I really enjoy!), Thanksgiving isn’t all about food! There is so much more to this holiday. It’s an amazing story of courage and faith that I’m going to tell you about.

It all began many, many years ago, way back around 1600. A group of people named the Pilgrims lived in England. They loved God and wanted to worship Him freely without any restrictions. But, instead, they were arrested, put in jail, and punished when they worshiped God. So God gave them the idea to move across the Atlantic Ocean to live in the New World where they would be free to pray to God and worship Him. I think that was very brave of them. They left everything they had because of their love for God and their trust in Him!

The New World was the name given to what we now know as the United States of America. This was long before there were cars or planes, so the Pilgrims had to sail across a huge ocean on a ship. It wasn’t easy, but they escaped England on a ship named the Mayflower. In all, there were about 102 Pilgrims who made the trip. And guess what? There were 32 kids on that ship too! Kids are very important to God (and their moms and dads) so they weren’t left behind. . .

Soraya Diase Coffelt is a lawyer and former judge of the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands on St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. She is the mother of two sons. After serving as a parent volunteer in the Children's Ministry at her church, she realized that she had a calling and a gift to teach children God's Word in a very simple but fun and exciting way. During a period of about 15 years, she became a leader in the Children's Ministry and then a lay minister. She has been on missionary trips to Honduras and the Amazon Region of Peru ministering to adults and children. God has given her many creative ideas for ministering His Word to children, and her books are just some of them. In 2012, she established a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation named As The Stars Of The Sky Foundation, Inc. to assist with the physical and spiritual needs of children. All proceeds from the sales of her books go toward this cause. She regularly reads to children at clinics and schools.

If you are looking for a book on the true history of Thanksgiving, this is NOT it. Rather, this is the mythologized, romanticized, sanitized version of white European settlers graciously inviting "Indians" to their first harvest feast. It tells of the help from those Natives who spoke English well because they "had lived in England," neglecting to mention that they had been kidnapped, taken to England, and enslaved.
I have purchased other "It's Not About You" books from this author, which have been helpful, and was surprised by this one - that a woman of color would write a book which wrongly glorifies the white invaders who enslaved the First Peoples, stole their land and goods, and killed them by war, disease, and destruction of their food sources. We need to stop perpetuating these "feel good" tales which erase our uncomfortable history. There are so many good books out now which provide a balanced history of hard truths which are age appropriate for every grade level. By the way, I am a white descendent of English colonists, and I do not "hate America" as some might suggest. Honesty about our nation's past, both good and bad, is the first step toward a better future committed to equity and justice for all.

Pros- this book is very informative, the pictures are beautiful. It's heavily Christian based, which I LOVED & was looking for. The message is wonderful!

Cons- THIS BOOK IS VERY INFORMATIVE aka LOOOOONG & FULL of description & detail. It would make an excellent homeschool curriculum bk &/or still a holiday tradtion shared with children of an older age. My 6 yo had a very difficult time following. Even I at times found myself saying "really? It needs that MUCH description?" I feel it needed way more pictures for all the wording or a lot less wording, to the point. Either way, it's just plain long.

All in all it's nice. I even learned some things bc u know public school.... But would I recommend it, probably not. I am however going to give the Christmas one from the series a go!

Turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing, corn--Thanksgiving is a holiday hungry tummies look forward to, and this book gives kids (and parents) a chance to stop and learn what this food-filled holiday is all about.

Like all books in this series, it starts with a little boy writing a letter to Mrs. Turkey. It's a cute letter, which will make readers smile. From here, the book slides into the history of Thanksgiving, starting all the way across the ocean in Europe. My son was happy to find several names and places mentioned that he'd already heard about in school, and fell into a conversation concerning the holiday and all it's aspects. In other words, not only were my kids intrigued by the history but were ready to learn more.

The illustrations in this are colorful and well done. They help bring the story of the pilgrims to life and let even the youngest listeners follow along.

I especially appreciate the writing in these, just right for the intended age group. It's never dry despite the names, places and dates, and has moments with a bit of humor, which made me smile. The Christian aspect on Thanksgiving falls nicely into place, especially since the pilgrims made their journey due to religious reasons. The entire journey and move isn't presented with exaggerated happiness, but rather states the troubles and dangers clearly without ever becoming graphic.

Summed up, this is a delightful book, perfect for this time of year and the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. And I really recommend it for families who'd like their kids to get better acquainted with the story behind this important holiday.

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
