Bayou Suzette Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 34 ratings

A Cajun girl tries to keep her family together on the Louisiana bayou

It’s been almost 2 years since Suzette’s father caught 2 bullets in his back. Since then, he’s been bed-ridden, too sick to hunt or fish or do any of the things a bayou man must do to keep his family fed. While he heals, Suzette scours the swamps around her house for fish, gators, or anything she can sell to put food on the table. It’s hard, but Suzette is a proud Cajun, and work doesn’t scare her. When an Indian girl appears on the bayou, Suzette finds in her a friend—and maybe a way to save her family.

This moving novel lovingly depicts the warmth and vitality of Cajun people and a time when the bayous seemed to stretch forever.

I couldn't put the book down as a kid, and couldn't wait to read it again. I think it's one of the best books I've read as a kid by far. The book was in great shape, my best buy ever. I hope to hand it down to my grandkids. Great reading. I grew up a few miles from Bayou Barataria , loved that era in history, and always wanted to live in that era. I'm a big fan of Jean Lafitte stories. I also live a mile from Bayou Coquille, what is now part of Jean Lafitte National Park. My grandparents told us some great stories from the Jean Lafitte days. And no, he was not a pirate, he only looked out for the people to save them from the government. May his gold stay where it should, his home in the bayou. Remember, if you try to dig up his gold, the ghost will protect it. We still believe that to this day, so beware.

I read this book as a child, and have fond memories of it. It was very difficult to find because it is out of print. When I did find it, the copies were too expensive. I am thankful I found this reasonably priced copy. The characters live in the swamps of Louisiana, probably in the last century(or two!). The dialect is charming and really gives you a feel of how life was in those days. I recommend this book for ages around 9 to 13 if you are lucky enough to find a copy; although I still enjoy it as an adult!

I love the depiction of the bayou life and culture. The Reader draws close to the characters. It is so moving how the family has a change of heart towards a young Native American girl. Prejudices turn to acceptance and love. Depicts how children are often more accepting than adults. The adults have a change of heart in the end. Beautiful story.

there were pages missing in the book as well as some pages repeated. Instead of page 163, page 147
to page 162 were repeated followed by page 180. No idea what was intended from 163 to 180.
Oh well.

I love Lenski's writings and artwork, and this is about the third regional story of hers that I've read. Bayou Suzette is a story of a Bayou girl who befriends a Native American girl . The book covers their adventures and describes in detail the happenings of Suzette's family and community.
An excellent read for both kids and adults!
