Platinum Doll: A Novel Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 186 ratings

A fictionalized portrait of Golden Age–Hollywood’s original blonde bombshell, the ambitious star who battled real-life drama as she lit up the screen.

It’s the Roaring Twenties and seventeen-year-old Harlean Carpenter McGrew has run off to Beverly Hills. She’s chasing a dream—to escape her small, Midwestern life and see her name in lights.

In California, Harlean has everything a girl could want—a rich husband, glamorous parties, socialite friends—except an outlet for her talent. But everything changes when a dare pushes her to embrace her true ambition—to be an actress on the silver screen. With her timeless beauty and striking shade of platinum-blond hair, Harlean becomes Jean Harlow. And as she’s thrust into the limelight, Jean learns that this new world of opportunity comes with its own set of burdens. Torn between her family and her passion to perform, Jean is forced to confront the difficult truth—that fame comes at a price, if only she’s willing to pay it . . .

Amid a glittering cast of ingenues and Hollywood titans—Clara Bow, Clark Gable, Laurel and Hardy, Howard Hughes—
Platinum Doll introduces us to the star who would shine brighter than them all.

Anne Girard's wonderful book,"Platinum Doll", a pleasure from beginning to end, lets the reader in on the remarkable story of Jean Harlow's early years in Hollywood and her rise to world-wide fame.
Girard tells the story of a shy but eager young girl who comes to Hollywood at age sixteen with her brand-new, equally young, husband. This is their love story, really, and is what makes the book such a wonderful read.
For all the while Jean is scrabbling to get a real working job as an actress, hitting the auditions, happening in on some lucky breaks, arguing with her mother who arrives in hot pursuit of her beloved but bullied daughter, trying to hold all the strings of her increasingly complicated life together, her love affair with her husband weaves both a gentle and fearful spell for the reader.
Jean is often overwhelmed. Her mother and husband dislike each other. The studios try to control her destiny in ways with which she is not comfortable. However, due to money issues, she is forced to back down over and over.
But this determined young woman prevails, and by the end of the book she is imprinting her hands in Grauman's Chinese Theatre.
There is a lyrical and gentle quality to Girard's writing, which speaks to the woman Harlow apparently was. There is a gaiety, freshness, feistiness and playfulness too, reminding us at every turn just how very young she was. She was a formidable woman in the making, though, because even though her young marriage was lost, Jean Harlow went on to become one of the greatest stars in the world.
Anne Girard's book is a wonderful read, and to add to the delicious flavor of the amazing story, it is filled with luscious period details, from Harlow's clothes, the restaurants of the day, to the architecture of early Hollywood, to tidbits about the early stars.
I couldn't put it down.

I wanted to read a novel about Jean Harlow, and how she became an actress, and you get a bit of that in this book. It isn't a literary prize, though. Its almost a novel for tweens.

Very interesting. Moved quickly. Characters were real, but superficial in parts. If you can read this and not detest the Mother character, you are better than me.

A fast-paced look at the beginning of Jean Harlow's short Hollywood career. I would have liked to see the story continue till her death (which occurred only four years after the end of this story). Still, it's a fun read peppered with lots of behind-the-scene details and loads of big names from early Hollywood. The book also offers an in-depth portrayal of the psychological transformation Harlean McGrew underwent to change from a starstruck teenager into one of the most glamorous and recognizable stars in the film capital's pantheon.

I know that I can always count on Anne Girard to transport me to the era, location, attitude and style of the world in which her characters exist! Again, in Platinum Doll, we are drawn into the glamorous yet complex town of Hollywood as it soared through the roaring twenties and established itself as the center of glamor, money and success in America. Ms. Girard presents Harlean McGrew, a beautiful young girl from the midwest who ended up in Hollywood, not to follow her dream but her mother's dream to become a star. Anne Girard helps us understand this young woman during the extreme highs and lows as she became one of Hollywood's most glamorous and iconic figures. It's been a while since I have been immersed in a rising Hollywood star story, but I am thrilled that I took a dive into Platinum Doll! It is beautifully written and thoroughly researched, a trademark of author Anne Girard.

Not what I expected. Too much concentration on conversations between the characters that couldn't possibly be factual. I hoped to learn about her entire life and not just her early days in Hollywood and her frustrating unhappy first marriage.

It was a nice glimpse into the world of a young woman so determined to try and be her own person despite the tug of war from her husband and mother. "Hated" the mother who wouldn’t let this young woman be herself but that was her battle to forge. Would like to think she won that battle
