Love, Lies and Spies Kindle Edition

So when her father sends her to London for a season, she’s determined not to form any attachments. Instead, she plans to secretly publish her research.
Spencer Northam is not the average young gentleman of leisure he appears. He is actually a spy for the War Office, and is more focused on acing his first mission than meeting eligible ladies. Spencer can finally focus, until he is tasked with observing Juliana’s traveling companions . . . and Juliana herself . . .

CHAPTER 1
In which a young lady clinging to a cliff will eventually accept anyone's help
"OH MY, this is embarrassing," Miss Juliana Telford said aloud. There was no reason to keep her thoughts to herself, as she was alone, completely alone. In fact, that was half of the problem. The other half was, of course, that she was hanging off the side of a cliff with the inability to climb either up or down and in dire need of rescue.
"Another scrape. This will definitely give Aunt apoplexy."
Juliana hugged the cliff ever closer and tipped her head slightly so that she could glance over her shoulder. Her high-waisted ivory dress was deeply soiled across her right hip, where she had slid across the earth as she dropped over the edge.
Juliana shifted slowly and glanced over her other shoulder. Fortunately, the left side showed no signs of distress, and her lilac sarcenet spencer could be brushed off easily. She would do it now were it not for the fact that her hands were engaged, holding tightly to the tangle of roots that kept her from falling off the tiny ledge.
Juliana continued to scrutinize the damage to her wardrobe with regret, not for herself so much as for her aunt, who seemed to deem such matters of great importance. Unfortunately, her eyes wandered down to her shoes. Just beyond them yawned an abyss. It was all too apparent how far above the crashing waves of the English Channel she was — and how very small the ledge.
Despite squishing her toes into the rock face as tightly as possible, Juliana's heels were only just barely accommodated by the jutting amalgamate. The occasional skitter and plop of eroding rocks diving into the depths of the brackish water did nothing to calm her racing heart.
Juliana swallowed convulsively. "Most embarrassing." She shivered despite a warm April breeze. "I shall be considered completely beyond the pale if I am dashed upon the rocks. Aunt will be so uncomfortable. Most inconsiderate of me."
A small shower of sandy pebbles rained down on Juliana's flowery bonnet. She shook the dust from her eyes and listened. She thought she had heard a voice.
Please, she prayed, let it be a farmer or a tradesman, someone not of the gentry. No one who would feel obligated to report back to Grays Hill Park. No gentlemen, please.
"Hello?" she called out. Juliana craned her neck upward, trying to see beyond the roots and accumulated thatch at the cliff's edge.
A head appeared. A rather handsome head. He had dark, almost black, hair and clear blue eyes and, if one were to notice such things at a time like this, a friendly, lopsided smile.
"Need some assistance?" the head asked with a hint of sarcasm and the tone of a ...
"Are you a gentleman?" Juliana inquired politely.
The head looked startled, frowned slightly, and then raised an eyebrow before answering. "Yes, indeed, I am —"
"Please, I do not wish to be rescued by a gentleman. Could you find a farmer or a shopkeep — anyone not of the gentry — and then do me the great favor of forgetting you saw me?"
"I beg your pardon?"
"I do not want to be rude, but this is a most embarrassing predicament —"
"I would probably use the word dangerous instead."
"Yes, well, you would, being a man. But I, on the other hand, being a you

- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2016I had the pleasure of finishing Love, Lies, and Spies, and it was stupendous! I was feeling frustrated last month with the excessive amount of romance books I was reading. I don’t particularly enjoy the genre in general, and every book I read seemed to be oozing with silly, romantic fancies. If I’m going to read a romance novel though, then I want to read more like this one!
Love, Lies, and Spies is the story of an unlikely encounter and romance between Miss Juliana Telford, a young woman more interested in researching the lady beetles of the English countryside than her upcoming debut, and Spencer Northam, a proper gentlemen working undercover for the War Office trying to find proof of treason by Lord Pyebald. All the necessary elements for a successful Regency novel were present: a handsome suitor, an independent woman, overbearing chaperones, less enlightened females, and shameless matchmakers. The plot was delightful, and I was overjoyed to find a novel set in the Regency period that focused on more than the social aspects. I liked that the authoress chose to also incorporate the Napoleonic Wars into her story.
Furthermore, the writing strongly recalls the works of Jane Austen in its style and tones. Those romances I very much enjoy, and this book impressed me with its Austen essence. It seemed to me to be a bit of an infusion between Pride and Prejudice and Emma. You can imagine my delight given that Elizabeth Bennet and Emma Woodhouse are my two favorite heroines of Austen. I do think the writer incorporated perhaps a bit too much of modern thinking in the interactions between her characters, but not enough to be a nuisance or take away from the setting of the story.
The writing was also emotionally compelling to me. I smiled, I chuckled, and I laughed out loud unabashedly. In addition to the good wit and humor however, there were also moments were I felt the frustration and longing of the characters to the point where I was almost in tears without quite knowing why.
Without a doubt, I give my recommendation to Love, Lies, and Spies. If you enjoy a good historical romance, you simply must pick up a copy.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2016The minute I read the summary and saw the cover to Love, Lies and Spies by Cindy Anstey I immediately wanted to read it. I love historical romance - add in the spy aspect and I am totally on board.
Juliana Telford is the main character and there is more to her than meets the eye. As a girl growing up in the nineteenth century, she should be interested in attending parties and finding a husband but really, none of that is important to her. Instead, she would prefer to continue to study the bugs she and her father have researched for so long. Unfortunately in order to try to get a publisher to consider publishing their research, she has to jump through some hoops and that includes pretending she is interested in parties and a husband.
Our hero is Spencer Northam and like Juliana, he is hiding something about himself. As a spy for the War Office, he is on a mission to find the truth about the traitors he has been directed to watch. As he and his good friend, Lord Randolph Bobbington spend some time outside of London, conveniently near the home of the supposed traitors, they cross paths with Juliana and things become super interesting.
I have to admit, I love the way Juliana and Spencer met. It was one of my favorite parts and you don’t have to wait long for it as it is the first chapter of the book. With that said, the book is written well and the rest of the book provides fantastic interactions between these characters. As Juliana continues to investigate her publishing options and Spencer continues to investigate the traitors, they cross paths quite a bit. To make it easier for both of them to avoid potential matchmaking – since neither of them are looking for a spouse – they pretend they are interested in each other and the development of their friendship and eventually a romance was well done. Please note, the romance is very PG but I loved seeing how their relationship evolved. The banter between these two and getting to peek into the development of their relationship was fantastic.
In addition to the above, there is an added layer to the story. Someone (nope, I’m not saying who) has decided they want to compromise Juliana in order to be able to marry her and have access to her money. I won’t go into much detail on this aspect of the story only because I don’t want to give it away but he has a connection to the family that Juliana is traveling to London with and when things start to fall apart for him things become more dangerous for Juliana. Other secondary characters include Juliana’s aunt, uncle, and cousin. All of them add something to the story and help keep the story moving forward.
Overall I thought this was a fantastic YA historical romance. It was exactly what I was looking for and I can’t wait to read more by Anstey. If you are looking for something light with a historical feel and well-written characters, consider checking this book out. There really is something for everyone in this book – romance, intrigue, and a bit of adventure to keep you turning the pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical, adventure, romance! What more could you want?
I purchased this book after reading the a sample at the end of the "These Vicious Masks". I was hooked from the first page as who wouldn't want to find out if a young women, precariously clinging to a cliff gets rescued? The answer no one!
This dramatic start sets the pace for this book.
The main protagonists, Miss Juliana Telford and Mr Spencer Northam, are fantastic and provide light humour as well as interesting characters. Juliana is intelligent, resourceful and witty. I liked that she stood by her moral beliefs, even though this lead her into difficult social situations and the nickname "blue stocking" being whispered among society. She doesn't let society being her down but concentrate on what really matters to her, her family and lady beetles.
Spencer is another interesting character, smart and a bit cocky, this creates the humour between both characters. As Juliana can be very serious at times but he brings out her own witty character. His mission in this book, as he is a spy for the war office, leaves you guessing who and want is going on. Futhermore, it was interesting to see him try to balance the both sides of his life. He although he had been in the espionage job for a while he still makes mistakes. I especially enjoyed the parts where Spencer has to save a certain "damsel in-distress", as said damsel although thankful, makes it clear that she can save herself.
I loved the secondary characters as they proved the norms of society at this time. And of course the actual plot involving the war office and the Napoleon War. This book had traitors, thiefs and smuggling. The plot itself doesn't slow down and was glad when my assumptions were mistaken, as there where a few wee twists that I did not see coming and made this book even better. I would love to see more of Carrie and Randolph and see what becomes of those characters as I feel that their story isn't quite finished.
Overall if you like historical adventures with romance and fantastic characters then I would read this book. I couldn't put this book down the whole time I was reading it and after having finished it, I re-read it as I didn't want the story to end. One the best books I've read in awhile.
