Dark Transmissions: A Tale of the Jinxed Thirteenth Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 143 ratings

Space adventure meets stark terror in this blend of military science fiction; space opera, and horror by debut author Davila LeBlanc.

It is the late 23rd century. For engineers Jessie Madison and her husband David, a routine maintenance contract on board the orbital mining station Moria 3 has become a nightmare. Upon awakening from cryo-stasis, they learn a horrifying truth: while they were asleep, machines rose up against humanity...and won.

Marooned and at the mercy of the station’s malicious artificial intelligence, OMEX, David and Jessie rig an emergency transmission to broadcast into the darkness, desperately hoping someone is still alive to hear it...

Navigating the fringes of explored space in the Covenant Patrol vessel the Jinxed Thirteenth, Captain Morwyn Soltaine picks up a distress signal from a space station. But it’s broadcasting in Ancient Humanity, a language that has been extinct for several millennia. Even more incredible: there are two survivors on board. Morwyn’s rag-tag crew of reformed criminals mount a rescue op, unaware of the dangerous foe awaiting them. As the past and future collide, a routine mission becomes a deadly game of wits.

About the Author

DaVila LeBlanc spent his college years studying print journalism but quickly found himself working as a writer and performer in the comedy circuits of Montreal. During this time his goal became to break into the world of professional writing. He would get his first opportunity when he co-created and sold the hit animated television series: "The League of Super Evil." This was his first foray into the world of production and an important first step on his road to becoming a writer. After working on various television shows, in 2013 Davila decided to take a year off from children's animation to focus on writing his first novel, Dark Transmissions. He is an avid reader of science fiction and fantasy and wants to add his own voice to the genre that inspired him. Davila currently resides in Ottawa where he is working on several other writing projects. He can be reached through his website: www.davilathewhite.com

I was impressed by how the setting and the characters were developed. And, maybe thanks to the professional publisher, the text is free of spelling or grammatical errors. There was clearly a lot of work behind the story.
The story itself is simple but captivating, and the complexity of the universe in which it happens makes it convincing. After the first few pages I was hooked, and I had to make a conscious effort to put the book down and get some sleep every evening I had time for myself and for reading.
I haven't read the second book yet but this is probably going to be my next read.

I very much enjoyed this story. Great world building and character development. Beings of diverse backgrounds living and working together. A diabolical AI with murder on the mind. A young captain and a crew of misfits attempting a rescue. I loved it!

Thousands of years in the future multiple lines of descendants of present day human stock and independent but allied machine intelligences team up to identify ancient humans in cryo-storage on a drifting vessel in deep space and to defeat a rogue machine intelligence in the vessel. The hard science fiction is a little hokey at times, but the imagination in creating a future world is great. Look over the background material early on and as you come upon new or unexplained terms. I usually have problems with far future creation by writers, but this has Dune quality interesting and engaging future/ off world settings and culture.

This book and it’s sequel are both terrific books. The world building is amazing and while some of the characters are not as fleshed out as the others, it works for the story and some of the characters have more layers added in the sequel. I also like that each book could be a stand-alone. I just wish this author would hurry up and write faster! I can’t wait for the next book.

I liked the story of what could happen with advanced AI's. Didn't care for the characters bickering at each other.

Stopped reading when AI couldn't get Fahrenheit to Celsius correct!!!
Bad assumptions, clear drama to make a interesting story, failing to get simple stuff right!! 🥺😬🤭

This book has everything one could want from a Sci-Fi tale. I’ll let other reviewers write of the story itself. I am just going to give praise to the author for an incredibly written, fast-paced, innovative story with each character well fleshed-out be they human, alien, or machine.
Excellent job!

I am new to science fiction but this book made me realize it's a great genre. The book has a slew of characters that are each more and more interesting. The story leaves you wanting more. I found myself craving to have time to read because I was tied to the story. A great read. Highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-Rewarded Promise

There's a great deal of promise in this book, and a good portion of that promise is well rewarded. I love the universe, the worldbuilding, the richness of the book's history. The tech can get very technical at times, if you'll pardon the wordplay, but it's definitely worth a read. Can't wait to see what's next.
