About the Author

Evelyn Anthony is the pen name of Evelyn Ward-Thomas (1926–2018), a female British author who began writing in 1949. She gained considerable success with her historical novels—two of which were selected for the American Literary Guild—before winning huge acclaim for her espionage thrillers. Her book, The Occupying Power, won the Yorkshire Post Fiction Prize, and her 1971 novel, The Tamarind Seed, was made into a film starring Julie Andrews and Omar Sharif. Anthony’s books have been translated into nineteen languages.

Long one of Anthony’s followers, I avoided this one. Don’t know why. I haven’t seen the movie either. Talk about intrigue, this one is a grabber. It comes closer to my favorite, The Defector, than any of her other very good books. WOW!

Very glad to see these books becoming available for kindle. A real blast from the past. Somewhat dated, and by no stretch of the imagination could this be considered a straight romance however there is "attraction" between Judith Fallow and the enigmatic Russian, Feodor Sverdlov.

There's plenty of intrigue, spies, and exotic locations to keep a reader interested. It did get a bit bogged down in the middle of the story but on the plus side the "spy/traitor" wasn't who I originally thought it would be. I'm a tad biased when it comes to these older romantic suspense/ thrillers.

Slow, but a good ending

This is the first book by Evelyn that I’ve read, more out of curiosity as I’d seen the movie many years ago and couldn’t remember the story, and also because my latest novel has a similar title. The slowness made it a bit tedious, the many characters confusing, but the plot was good, and the ending quite satisfying, if somewhat predictable. I suppose times have moved on and cold-war intrigue is a bit out of date, so the interaction between the characters seemed a bit naive by modern standards. Even though the menace of violence is ever present, the lack of emphasis on it is quite refreshing in this age of big guns and blood splattering storytelling.

I saw the movie with Julie Andrews and Omar Shariff and I have liked the story since then. What a pleasant surprise to find the book at Amazon! Using easy, everyday language, she builds a good espionage plot and I simply could not put it down! I like it the same way I like Rebecca, Trustee in the Toolroom and most of the books by Agatha Christie. It will most certainly be read again and again, and I definitely recommend it.

I cant believe i forgot.i was quite young when i saw the movie and fell completely in love with Omar Sherriff. Never a Julie Andrews fan but she was so perfect as Judith. Then of course i had to read the book which was equally as good though i think more so because id seen the film and put the faces to characters
