The Groundnut Story
In January 2012 we started a bimonthly supper club called The Groundnut.
The aim we had in mind was to draw attention to traditional recipes, both inherited and adapted, as well as to explore new ingredients and combinations.
African food is some of the best on the planet. It is easily shopped for and cooked, yet remains for some reason off the culinary radar of most people in the United States.

Duval is a multidisciplinary artist and designer.
Folayemi co-runs the music project MogaDisco, which explores the pre-1990s sounds of Africa, and shares his passion for soccer through coaching and writing about the game.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2021I'd been searching for an African cookbook, since our favorite Nigerian restaurant shut down during the pandemic. Written by a trio of young chefs from London, the recipes draw upon their heritage from the different regions of Africa. When the book arrived I couldn't wait to start cooking!
I tried out a few recipes which were delicious- groundnut stew, plantains, sukuma wiki- rich, garlicky greens... Today I'm going to make jollof rice and mustard shrimp.
There are all kinds of dishes, from chicken to seafood and veggies. It's funny how little we know about African food, yet its so flavorful and nutritious with lots of vegetable centric meals, legumes and tropical fruit. Looking forward to trying more of the recipes.

Everything is very clearly described, lovely pictures, instructions easy to follow, and the stories throughout the book are a pleasure to read. I own a copy on kindle but I'll be buying the hardcover as a gift for someone from Sierra Leone. She taught me how to make groundnut stew, but with the recipe from this book, I was able to tweak it a bit and create something I am more in tune with. Another great plus was seeing the dairy free options! This is book that anyone can enjoy, from omnivores to vegans, there is truly enough for everyone to enjoy. Well done. These recipes are truly better shared with loved ones.

It has so many more recipes than I’d expected, using healthy, whole food ingredients that are not hard to find and accessible cooking techniques. This book brings the delicious, beautiful celebration that is African cuisine to my fingertips. A lot o cookbooks that say they are African contain junk you wouldn't really want to fix for friends.
This one has a lot of meals that you would look forward to.
Add it to your Caribbean and Mediterranean books that you pull out for a change of pace from standard fare.

This was a great concept book with a unique story and perspective. There is no glossary of terms or sources. A lot of names of food raised with no explanation of the terms. Rarely are the origination or history of the ingredients and by who and when they arrived included such as the peri peri peppers or the use of echo words in names. Most unique ingredients are not defined, profiled or have the flavor profile explained and no alternative ingredients are provided. Not all recipes have pictures showing the final result or outcome along with the unique ingredients. The pictures in the book are generally not labelled leaving it more like a family photo album than a professional recipe book. The book requires a lot of reference work to fully define the recipes and ingredients. The subject matter had the potential to be a great book along the lines of a Solomonov, an Ottolenghi/Tamimi rendition or the new Martinez work, which define the ingredients along with alternatives as appropriate, provide layering of recipes with the foundations to build upon, glossaries and sources. The end result of these tomes is that they leave one feeling like they have participated in the food with the authors and a new field of culinary and cultural knowledge has been acquired.
The authors of Groundnut posit in the Introduction that they do not understand why African food is not on the culinary radar when it is some of the best food on the planet and is so easily cooked. A large number of ingredients are not readily available in different areas and the recipes take a fair amount of due diligence to make them work including as a base, translating Celsius to Fahrenheit for the North American audience and identifying and sourcing ingredients. Each attempt like this book helps to put the African foods on the radar, but unless you are already familiar with dodo, doro, egusi, puff puff, eba, kelewele, fufu, wot, efo tete, grains of salim, mbuzi, niter kibbeh, garri, etc., this book leaves more off the radar than on. Great start but the overall execution is lacking. The subject is amazing and the authors knowledge is evident. I wish that more of it would have been shared with the reader. Given all the additional research required, I felt more like a student than a culinary participant.
It is a creditable freshman work. I hope that the authors produce a sophomore compilation that places their culinary and cultural backgrounds firmly on the radar. I await, as they have whetted my appetite like no other book on African food has thus far.

So excited to have this on my shelf, these guys are amazing. It's such a beautiful book, with a great mix of food photography and more informal pictures of friends, family & inspirations. The recipes are easy to follow and don't contain a load of complicated methods or ingredients - just simple, understated but delicious food. I can't wait to get stuck in.

This is easily my favourite cookbook, and might even be up there with my favourite books in general. Because of the heartwarming personal stories and beautiful imagery of friends and family, you really get a sense of what The Groundnut supper club and African cooking is all about. The recipes are easy to follow and range from incredibly simple to seemingly complex, but are really well explained and easy to recreate. Most importantly, the couple of recipes I've tried already have been delicious! The book itself wouldn't be out of place on a coffee table, because the photos and illustrations are so artfully done. In short, it's amazing. Can't recommend it enough!
