The Only Thing Worse Than Me Is You: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 200 ratings

Named One of the 16 Best Young Adult Books of 2016 (So Far) by Paste Magazine!

Trixie Watson has two very important goals for senior year: to finally save enough to buy the set of Doctor Who figurines at the local comic books store, and to place third in her class and knock Ben West--and his horrendous new mustache that he spent all summer growing—down to number four.

Trixie will do anything to get her name ranked over Ben's, including give up sleep and comic books—well, maybe not comic books—but definitely sleep. After all, the war of Watson v. West is as vicious as the Doctor v. Daleks and Browncoats v. Alliance combined, and it goes all the way back to the infamous monkey bars incident in the first grade. Over a decade later, it's time to declare a champion once and for all.

The war is Trixie's for the winning, until her best friend starts dating Ben's best friend and the two are unceremoniously dumped together and told to play nice. Finding common ground is odious and tooth-pullingly-painful, but Trixie and Ben's cautious truce slowly transforms into a fandom-based tentative friendship. When Trixie's best friend gets expelled for cheating and Trixie cries foul play, however, they have to choose who to believe and which side they're on—and they might not pick the same side.

Stephanie Perkins meets
10 Things I hate About You in The Only Thing Worse than Me Is You, a fresh, romantic debut from author Lily Anderson inspired by Much Ado About Nothing.

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—Trixie Watson and Ben West have been rivals since first grade, and it is in her senior year that Trixie is resolved to get a higher class ranking than her adversary. However, as time goes by, Trixie and Ben realize that they may have more in common than they thought. They are interested in the same geeky characters, TV shows, and movies, and their best friends are dating each other. But when Trixie's best friend is accused of cheating, Trixie will have to decide whose side she's really on. Anderson's debut and Much Ado About Nothing update is full of modern-day fandoms, such as Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Star Wars, and Marvel comics. Readers interested in these topics might enjoy this novel, but the story line is drawn out, with a long overdue conclusion. However, the narrative makes up for its slow pace with its lovable, relatable, and realistic characters. VERDICT A convoluted work full of contemporary fandoms that fans of Rainbow Rowell's Eleanor & Park or Fangirl will enjoy.—Caitlin Wilson, Brooklyn Public Library

Holy nerdvana! This book was amazing on so many levels and I never wanted to stop reading it. This book is the perfect mix of teen angst, sweet romance, and a whole lot of nerdy references that will make any fangirl rejoice! With fantastically hilarious characters and an interesting plot, this story has it all and is a must read.

My favorite part of this novel was the characters. Yes, the plot and the setting were interesting, but honestly...what makes this book is the amazingly written characters. Ms. Anderson did the perfect job at capturing a nerdy (but totally awesome) teen girl trying to navigate the crazy world that is high school (and not just any high school, but a high school for geniuses competing for a spot in the top 10...well more like top 3). Trixie is going down as one of my all time favorite main female leads. She was sarcastic and hilarious, and just the perfect person to narrate this story. There's a lot to love about her character, and her banter with Ben is pure gold. It will leave you laughing out loud for several minutes, it's that good. And when Trixie and Ben realize they might not hate each other as much as they thought, well you can see where this goes, but I honestly didn't mind the predictability of it one bit! Every single one of these characters is likable and the type of people you want to have as your best friend. Ms. Anderson did a wonderful job at making each character unique and quirky, and everyone will be able to relate to these characters in some way or the other (I know I certainly did!).

There is some seriousness to this book though, and again, I thought Ms. Anderson captured the dynamic that is high school perfectly. Relationships are tossed through the wringer and not everyone will come out the same. I did love though how they all banded together to fight for the truth to be heard. Just goes to show that when nerds unite, the "powers that be" can be brought down!

With so many nerdy references, there's a lot to love in this book. If you like anything nerdy (SuperWhoLock, Marvel, Buffy, the list goes on), you'll adore this novel. This is a great story that showcases strong friendships, witty banter, and unique characters. You definitely want this book on your TBR as soon as possible!

Happy reading :)

Lily Anderson’s The Only Thing Worse Than Me Is You is the modern retelling of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing that you didn’t know you needed. Trixie Watson and Ben West have been mortal enemies since grade school. To say that they hate each other’s guts would be an understatement. At Messina Academy for the Gifted, students are pushed to their academic limits. Trixie is determined to end her senior year by beating Ben in the rankings. Their verbal battles are notorious at school. Desperate for peace, their friends secretly hatch a plan to get the two to reconcile. When Trixie and Ben’s tenuous new friendship begins to evolve into something more, Trixe’s best friend is accused of manipulating the senior class rankings. Now Trixie will do anything to prove her friend’s innocence, but it may cost her her new found friendship with Ben.

The Only Thing Worse Than Me Is You is a smart and funny contemporary. Trixie’s personality jumps right off the pages with her cheeky insults and nerdy allusions. I love how unapologetically geeky Trixie is and enjoyed reading about an entire group of nerdy teen friends. Trixie isn’t always a likable character. She remarks that Ben’s insults always go just a little too far, but Trixie is just as guilty of taking low blows. She’s sometimes more interested in taking a jab at Ben than recognizing her insults can be really harmful. I really admired Trixie’s unwavering loyalty to her best friend Harper. She sets aside her own interests and regardless of the consequences did everything she could to clear her friend of any wrongdoing. Despite her flaws or maybe because of them, I came to really love Trixie as a character. She makes mistakes, but more importantly she learns from them and grows.

The novel is told in first person which limits readers’ insight into certain characters. While I enjoyed the verbal sparring between Trixie and Ben, I was so happy when they were able to spend some time together without feeling the need to bite each other’s heads off. More alike than either of them would dare admit, Trixie and Ben get along surprisingly well. Bonding over comics, sci-fi shows, and graphic novels, the two learn to appreciate each other’s positive qualities. With that being said, I would have liked to have seen these two characters open up more with one another. Ben has some family issues that came up that I wanted more insight into and their relationship would have been a good access point.

With witty banter and steadfast friendship at its center, Lily Anderson’s The Only Thing Worse Than Me Is You is a delightful retelling that had me invested in the main relationship from start to finish. I cannot wait for more novels by this gifted writer.

This story flew off the page for me. A classic Shakespearean framework, a quirky modern teen universe, and fast-paced witty dialogue...how can you go wrong? I have a guilty pleasure for classic love stories fraught with pridefulness, miscommunication, and emotional tug-of-war. The kind of guilty pleasure that makes you read Jane Austin books over and over again until your vision blurs and you have to switch from the book to the BBC adaptation. This book was a really fun way to scratch that itch. Like others noted, the book is fairly heavy on pop culture references, be it Whedon, Marvel, Doctor Who, etc. But whether you get the references or not doesn't really matter, the narrative is accessible to anybody. This is the kind of book I wish I had as a teen, something that sends a message to girls that it is in fact possible to indulge your pubescent heart-throbbing without sacrificing your burgeoning feminist ideals or hiding your intellect.

I absolutely loved this book for a variety of reasons but the biggest being the characters th e main character Trixie was funny, witty and smart without seeming annoying she was an overall great character and I loved how she interacted with other characters especially Ben. The story was clever and managed to intrigue you despite being about high school students being framed for cheating. The story in the bluff made itself out to be a romance and although there was a good but not overwhelming amount of romance in the book it definitely wasn't the main focus but the amount that was in there I loved. I highly recommend this book to anyone really as I think everyone can find something in here they will love.

As a comic book loving nerd myself, I totally loved the geekdoms in this.

Basically a school full of Sheldon's and Velma's. I loved the awkward tween romance and the love between the rivals was very well done.

Worth the money, don't worry if you aren't into the many fandom's mentioned the story still is accessible and the characters are fun.

ICH LIEBE DIESES BUCH! Es ist sehr nerdy und geeky und die ganzen Anspielungen! Doctor Who, Saga, Game of Thrones und und und. So. Geil.
Mein Nerd-Herz ist explodiert vor lauter Nerd-Kreischen. Außerdem ist es eine Adaption von Shakespeares "Viel Lärm um nichts" und das ist mein Lieblingsstück von ihm. Besser ging's also gar nicht!
