Review

If you still have a lot of Fat Quarters in your stash, then this book is for you. Thirteen quilt projects are presented, and for each of them, many variations are mentioned. Overall, there are over sixty possibilities for quilts. The projects are explained by several artists and there are step-by-step instructions for each quilt. For each design, the necessary materials are indicated in amount of Fat Quarters. ― patCHquilt, Winter 2015

Everyone loves a fat quarter. Get out your stash and indulge in 13 fun designs that can be made in different sizes and variations, giving a total of 75 ideas for all skill levels. The quilts have been designed by 14 different designers, offering diverse and appealing styles to suit many tastes. It's a fabulous book for yourself, but also for a gift because it has such wide appeal. The instructions and diagrams are crystal clear. I love the many layout options. Contemporary designs with a couple of more traditional quilts with a modern twist. Recommended. ―

Fat quarters are a popular cut of fabric, and preselected, color-coordinated fat quarter bundles are frequently available in fabric stores catering to quilters. This collection of projects takes a series of quilt blocks suited to color-coordinated fat quarter bundles and presents them in a mix of settings, allowing quilters to choose the look they prefer. Styles range from simple patchwork and half-square triangle-based designs to slightly more complex pieces involving triangular and rectangular pieces, with all of the blocks beginner friendly. The samples are generally bright and cheery, but color variations are given, demonstrating how shifts in the color palette affect the overall design of the quilt. The cutting diagrams are designed for fat quarters, allowing quilters to maximize the number of pieces that can be cut from a single fat quarter while minimizing waste. The piecing instructions are easy to follow, with sewing diagrams included for key steps in the process. VERDICT The block-with-setting-variations presentation is tried and true, so that quilters can easily customize their quilts to best suit their needs. This fun collection will appeal to quilters looking for quick, easy fat quarter-based projects. ―
Library Journal, 11/15/15

This book is a compilation of quilt projects from 14 different quilt designers. Designs range from the super simple to more advanced piecing techniques and blocks set on point. Included are blocks such as Churn Dash and Log Cabin and techniques such as free-form cutting and quilt-as-you-go. Each chapter begins with the main quilt design and then a number of variations are provided. These variations might involve rotating the blocks, swapping out high contrast colours and using neutrals or setting blocks in a different way. This book certainly provides lots of possibilities. ―

75 Fun Fat-Quarter Quilts is a great entry-level quilt book that is also fun (as they said!) for more experienced quilters. While one of the quilts does have an appliquéd flower on it, the rest of the quilts are easily machine pieced with all straight seams (no curves) and no inset seams. As others have said, the book consists of 13 quilts, each shown as a finished model, and then variations of the blocks to create more unique quilts. Some of the quilts aren't really that unique, however, such as eight variations of a string quilt, but there are some real gems in here. The half-square triangle quilt set and the modern chevron quilt set could be considered complete books if they were in their own modern quilt book. The instructions are clear and informative using some good time-saving techniques and I appreciate that the fabric requirements lists colors and values rather than reading like an ad for the latest designer fabrics. I consider this book a good value as there are probably four or five quilts either I or my daughter will make from the book.

I highly recommend this book. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. What sets this book apart is it offers 13 primary patterns with additional patterns offered based on variations of the main pattern. Instructions for the variations are equally clear and well illustrated.

I thought there would be more size options. I need baby quilt patterns but these were all pretty big. I had to use my own poor math skills to size down a pattern.

Great Ideas, really enjoying it

I love the bright colours that adorn the
cover of this book.
You know you are going to smile
from start to finish
looking at the beautiful designs inside.

The book uses fourteen quilters from
around the world and piles of
coordinated fat quarters.
From this they have designed a range
of modern to traditional, geometric
to figurative, patchy to elegant.

There are clear instruction for every quilt.
How to cut, block assembly and
the quilt construction.
Personally I think this book is for
someone who already quilts.
I'm not sure a newbie would be able
to construct some of the quilts.

One thing you may not realise with this book
is you aren't just going to get patterns for
quilts, there are also table runners.

Each design is unique and you can
really tell the different personalities
of each of the designers.

You can tailor the designs to your own
choices or decor.
They would make brilliant gifts
as each design has such a beautiful feel
and look anyone would be proud
to receive one.

I like reading about each of the designers
and seeing how what is said about
them is reflected in their designs.

You need to be aware that there are 13 quilt patterns in the book
and 62 variations of the quilts.
Not all the quilts are made up
some are only graphics.

There really is something for everyone
in this book!

I received this book to review.
However all opinions expressed are my own.
No monies were exchanged.

This is a great book - a wonderful opportunity for all levels of expertise. A beginner can create as sophisticated (or as simple) a quilt as an advanced quilter. I like how each pattern shows a number of additional pattern layouts. I love the colors of Spring Petals Gone Graphic (bright pink and orange!). It has a great runner layout that looks completely different from the original pattern, and the straight-set blocks is a very inspiring design. Lime in Da Coconut is a little more involved, but the directions for all of them are very clear: step-by-step, and all-in-all relatively simple and straightforward. Pucker Power is a little more challenging, but there are options to create differently-sized quilts, so someone less experienced could start out this design making a smaller quilt, runner, or lapquilt, to get a feel for this. A design as simple as Tango is also a great opportunity for a beginner to create something that looks more difficult than it is. I love its varied layouts, and the color choices, that show how important value is in making a block pop - which is what makes for an exciting, dynamic quilt, even more than the sophistication of the design. Ultimately, there's something for everyone here, and it's a great way to use up your stash and learn some new skills. The colorways are a great way to show how effectively color can be used, and very useful for the beginner, intermediate, and advanced quilter alike to give them the courage to step out of their safety zone.
