“Winsome and warmhearted, these books could become instant favorites.”—Publishers Weekly

Mr. Putter knows what he likes, and dancing is not on the list. But his neighbor Mrs. Teaberry has been watching ballroom dancing on TV.

She talks the reluctant Mr. Putter into coming along for an evening at the Crystal Ballroom, along with fine cat Tabby and good dog Zeke, of course. The ballroom is full of sparkles—and surprises…

“Written with simplicity and understated humor…The young audience will enjoy seeing these familiar characters express themselves on and off the dance floor.”—

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

When Mr. Putter’s neighbor, Mrs. Teaberry, proposes that they try ballroom dancing, he reluctantly agrees. Accompanied by Tabby the cat and Zeke the dog, they attend a dance at the Crystal Ballroom. Tabby bats the sparkly lights, and Zeke performs the tango with abandon, while Mr. Putter and Mrs. Teaberry cha-cha-cha. Written with simplicity and understated humor, the story springs to life visually through the strong, energetic pencil drawings brightened with watercolor and gouache. The young audience will enjoy seeing these familiar characters express themselves on and off the dance floor. An upbeat addition to the Mr. Putter and Tabby easy reader series. Grades K-2. --Carolyn Phelan

I used these as readers for my late 1st grader/early 2nd grader. I love how many series Cynthia Rylant has done on different reading levels, and Mr. Putter and Tabby were as fun as the others we have used. I have found that my children learn to read better when they love the characters, and they always love Cynthia Rylant's characters. In these books, the characters are cautious Mr. Putter, his very sanguine neighbor Mrs. Teaberry, and their pets, which suit them each perfectly. Each story is gentle and fun. Mr. Putter grits his teeth and goes with Mrs. Teaberry's newest wild scheme, her dog Zeke is crazy, his cat Tabby wants to rest, and Mrs. Teaberry bakes him wonderful goodies. They are kind to each other, and he reminisces about boyhood days... really sweet stories. My son told me when we were going through all of these that reading was his favorite time of day.

If you haven't delved into Cynthia Rylant's many series for many reading levels, you can do a google search to figure out which one might work best for where your child's skill level is.

I read the Mr. Putter & Tabby series to a group of 4-5 yr olds at a pre-school, and have been doing so for the past 10 years or so. I originally thought the stories might be a little too old for this age group, maybe better suited to 7-8s, but I underestimated my kids, Ms. Rylant, and Mr. Howard. The series has continued to entertain this age group through, now, 10 generations of kids, and each new story is eagerly awaited. I will confess, though, that the favorite character has got to be Mrs. Teaberry's good dog, Zeke, and his outfits. All of my kids have at least one dog at home, and can readily identify with Zeke's misadventures. And all of them are looking at a creaky old grandfather figure while I read to them, so I have no trouble convincing them of Mr. Putter's reluctance to get roped into Mrs. Teaberry's adventures. This latest one, Dance the Dance, has the usual good story line, excellent artwork, and is definitely up to series standard.

Kid loves Mr. Putter & Tabby!

I've loved every book Cynthia Rylant has written. The "Mr. Putter" series is excellent. Other absolutely great titles are "Mr. Putter and Tabby Run the Race", "Stir the Soup", "Bake the Cake" "Spill the Beans" I could go on, but they are all good; and my grandson loves them. He's almost 6 and we've been reading them for at least two years now. We have the whole series and every night we always read 1 or 2 "Putters" in addition to a few other titles. I never get tired of them.

Cynthia Rylant is a great author. She writes well for children of many different ages, she has an amazing number of books and several series. It is a wonderful thing when you can find books to read with your kids that adults and children both love. Her characters are lovable, her use of language is beautiful and I hope she keeps writing for a long time to come.
