Secrets of Nanreath Hall: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 1,244 ratings

This incredible debut historical novel—in the tradition of Beatriz Williams and Jennifer Robson—tells the fascinating story of a young mother who flees her home on the rocky cliffs of Cornwall and the daughter who finds her way back, seeking answers.

Cornwall, 1940. Back in England after the harrowing evacuation at Dunkirk, WWII Red Cross nurse Anna Trenowyth is shocked to learn her adoptive parents Graham and Prue Handley have been killed in an air raid. She desperately needs their advice as she’s been assigned to the military hospital that has set up camp inside her biological mother’s childhood home—Nanreath Hall. Anna was just six-years-old when her mother, Lady Katherine Trenowyth, died. All she has left are vague memories that tease her with clues she can’t unravel. Anna’s assignment to Nanreath Hall could be the chance for her to finally become acquainted with the family she’s never known—and to unbury the truth and secrets surrounding her past.

Cornwall, 1913. In the luxury of pre-WWI England, Lady Katherine Trenowyth is expected to do nothing more than make a smart marriage and have a respectable life. When Simon Halliday, a bohemian painter, enters her world, Katherine begins to question the future that was so carefully laid out for her. Her choices begin to lead her away from the stability of her home and family toward a wild existence of life, art, and love. But as everything begins to fall apart, Katherine finds herself destitute and alone.

As Anna is drawn into her newfound family’s lives and their tangled loyalties, she discovers herself at the center of old heartbreaks and unbearable tragedies, leaving her to decide if the secrets of the past are too dangerous to unearth…and if the family she’s discovered is one she can keep.

Critically acclaimed author of historical and paranormal romance, Alix Rickloff’s family tree includes a knight who fought during the Wars of the Roses (his brass rubbing hangs in her dining room) and a soldier who sided with Charles I during the English Civil War (hence the family's hasty emigration to America). With inspiration like that, what else could she do but start writing her own stories? She lives in Maryland in a house that’s seen its own share of history so when she’s not writing, she can usually be found trying to keep it from falling down.

The original review mentioned that chapters alternated between WWI as experienced by the daughter of an English Earls' Family and World War II from the viewpoint of her illegitimate daughter! I was skeptical that I would enjoy it or find it easy to follow... However , I was wrong! The author cleverly kept the story moving and the transition from chapter to chapter was not confusing. A very interesting story.

Historical fiction is by far my favorite genre, particularly stories that take place in war-torn Europe, so I immediately jumped at the opportunity to receive an advanced reading copy (ARC) of “Secrets of Nanreath Hall” by Alix Rickloff. In her debut historical novel, Alix depicts the lives of two strong women – a mother and daughter – living through WWI and WWII, respectively.

Lady Katherine, who’s story begins in 1913 before the first world war, struggles with society’s pressures of being prim and proper and eventually breaks free from her family to follow her heart and ambitions. Meanwhile, Katherine’s daughter Anna, whose story takes place during WWII, grapples with finding her place and herself after losing the only family she’s ever known – a couple who raised her after Lady Katherine’s death.

The novel stays true to its times, depicting the demands and tensions of society especially for women growing up striving to be more than a trophy wife, married for wealth and station. Taken through each woman’s life parallel, Katherine’s unfolds as Anna works to uncover the secrets of her family’s past.

While having an illegitimate child was a major scandal in the early 20th century, everyone knew that Katherine was “a fallen woman” from the moment she left her parents’ home to run away with Simon, the love of her life. Although it was scandalous and isolated Anna, it wasn’t really a secret that she had an unconventional upbringing. As Anna sets off to mother’s childhood home on a military assignment, the book implies that there are major secrets lurking in the corridors of Nanreath Hall. While the narrative was interesting and compelling, I was disappointed by the lack of bombshells uncovered. Granted, at the time, all of the secrets eventually discovered would have been major upsets for the family, as a reader I felt like they weren’t very shocking having already been alluded to throughout the story.

I love dual story novel when the two tales are woven together as deftly as Secrets of Nanreath Hall. I found myself in bed recovering from a " slight indisposition" and thus could read the novel straight through while sipping cups of strong tea while snuggled under the covers. Heavenly! I moss Downton Abbey and this almost seemed like a continuation of the story of younger members of that aristocratic world coping with the vast changes brought about by two World Wars. Totally engrossing,

Secrets of Nanreath Hall was a good book for its type. I enjoyed the characters and their problems and joys. The book is nice light reading and moves along well. I give this book three stars not because it is a bad book but because I reserve my four and five star reviews for books of deeper subject matter, books that are very well written or ones that are outstanding in their genre. Secrets of Nanreath Hall is better than many of its sort, though.

I liked this book. It is a fast and engaging read, and there are enough interesting plot twists that it kept me engaged throughout. The dual plotline is easy to follow, and I did not find it difficult or jarring to switch between the two. The characters are mostly (if not entirely) standard literary tropes - the seductive artist, the aristocratic young woman who longs for an adventurous life beyond the grasp of her suffocating parents, the haughty and insufferable sister-in-law, the WWI veteran who turns to alcohol to numb the pain, the handsome air force officer who comes from new money, etc. There's not a ton of depth to any of the characters, which makes for a light and fun read. It does feel a little cheesy and somewhat like a romance novel at times (and it clearly takes some of its themes from Downtown Abbey), but it's not pretending to be deeply intellectual.

A few things are left unresolved at the end of the book, which is a little frustrating, but perhaps this will just be the first in a series.

I loved this book. It goes back and forth from mother living during WWI then over to her daughter living during WWII. The mother was tossed out by her wealthy family in disgrace. The daughter works as a nurse during WWII and sets out to discover her mother's story. It takes place in London and the surrounding areas. It's a story of war, love, heartbreak, family secrets and it had me turning the pages! Really great read.

This book took me by surprise. It was touted as "if you liked Downton Abbey, you will love this book". I fell for it not expecting too much and was very pleasantly surprised, It has a double narrative which is unusual and excellent historical backup for both WW1 and WW2. I liked both the characters. Kitty"s story was a little far fetched for that time period. Anna. however, was a brave British woman and seemed to me to a real product of that era.
Loved the book and am looking forward to the next one. Really felt like WW2 Britian in 1940 and 1941.

Anyone who has enjoyed Kate Morton's books will enjoy this one as well. The story and characht÷R's are extremely well developed. The book has no tendency to plod along but moves along quickly. Unlike a Kate Morton's Book there are no surprising twists. But it is still a very enjoyable read. I hope Alex Rick off continues with more books in this style and can see the opportunity for followup books for the supporting charachters.

This is the first book I have read by this author, and it has me hooked. The characters are so original and believable. I'm loving the descriptions of a stately home requisitioned for use as a hospital, and the working day of the nurses, it's all very interesting. Would highly recommend !

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story - interesting read

Good story. The way the chapters were laid out - each one being a different time and character - was interesting and made you think. I rated 4 instead of 5 as I found the ending of the book very abrupt or cut off. I realize the author may want to continue the story and leave us wanting more, but the ending of this book only left me annoyed.
