Geeky meets kinky in this first deliciously sexy novel in the Slices of Pi series by RITA-nominated author Elia Winters, which follows the romantic rendezvous of the employees at PI Games, a gaming company based out of sultry Florida.

As a design manager at PI Games, Isabel Suarez is no stranger to the struggles of being a woman in a male-dominated industry. But when her team attends a gaming convention on the other side of the country, she figures there’s no harm in putting aside her professional demeanor for one weekend to participate in a risqué scavenger hunt. Why shouldn’t she let loose and have a little fun?

A careless romp soon turns into more, however, when Isabel ends up having a fling with Caleb Portland, an artist and animator, without knowing he has just been hired to partner with her at her company—and Caleb can’t bring himself to tell her. When they end up coworkers a few weeks later, they need to find a way to work together and keep things strictly professional. Caleb doesn’t want to take on a relationship and risk failure. Isabel doesn’t want to risk ruining the professional reputation she’s worked so hard to develop. But when faced with the undeniable sizzling chemistry between them, will either of them be able to resist temptation?

RITA™ Award-winning author Elia Winters has always been a New England girl. Although she spent much of her childhood in Florida, she returned to her home state of Massachusetts as a teenager and has remained in New England ever since. She was blessed with an artsy, creative, quirky family that nurtured her eccentricities and helped shape her into the woman she is today.

Elia holds a Master’s degree in English Literature and teaches at a small rural high school, where she also runs the drama club. She balances her love of words with a love of baking, crafting, and a bottomless well of geekiness; in her spare time, she is equally likely to be found playing tabletop games, kneading bread, cross-stitching, or binge-watching Marie Kondo.

A writer all her life, Elia likes to dabble in many genres, but erotic romance has been one of her favorites since she first began sneaking her mother’s romance novels. In Catholic high school, she kept her friends entertained with a steady stream of explicit stories and somehow never got caught passing them around. Now, sex education and kink-positive feminism have become a cornerstone of Elia’s brand, including reviewing sex toys and presenting at kink conventions. She is a fat, tattooed, polyamorous bisexual who loves petting cats and fighting the patriarchy.

Elia writes geeky, kinky, cozy erotic romance. She currently lives in western Massachusetts with her loving husband and their weird pets.

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

Even Odds by Elia Winters is a fun, geeky, and great read! I do love me some gaming and I love that the author incorporated that into her story. There aren’t many of these kinds of stories so I jumped at the chance to read this.

I loved the characters! Isabel is great. Working in a predominately male world, Isabel makes a name for herself. Which is hard to do. I loved her personality.
Caleb is a cutie. It was fun to see geeky people hang out and deal with feelings. I would love to read more if this turns into a series. I give this 4 stars!!

This was a very entertaining book. Funny, witty, romantic with a sense of realism. Nothing over the top, a lovely afternoon read. I would recommend this book. Although I initially picked this because of the blurb and because it was free, I will buy the rest of this series. I liked the writing and stay telling style. Well done to the author.

As a gamer girl myself, I’ll always have a soft spot for those characters in romance novels. But it’s so hard to find stories that portray gamers of either gender realistically, much less those who work in the industry. Winters, on the other hand, described the world so well that reading the first half of the book, set at a gaming convention, often felt close to home – and not in a comfortable way. The awkwardness of men in gaming (and SF/F culture, where I mostly hang out) is so real, and Winters created multiple characters across that spectrum I could easily imagine meeting in real life.

The story arc is simple and goes about the way you’d expect, but the realism of the two romantic leads prompted me to keep reading. I identify all too well with Isabel’s need to balance expressing femininity in a still male-dominated profession and with Caleb’s stress about pursuing his art. Caleb also gets so many bonus points for NOT being the typical hero in this story. A male character who actively recognizes and rejects the signs and impulses of toxic masculinity was a joy to read.

Despite how many sexy bits there are in the romance books I read, I don’t often call them out. I’d love to make an exception here because Winters does a fantastic job of literally making consent sexy. This inclusion is especially important in an interaction between characters who have just met, and I applaud this writing decision.

Caleb and Isabel were so good together! They meet at a gaming convention and Isabel decides to live it up for the weekend, including a fling with him. Only to find out he’s about to be her new coworker when she’s tried so hard to remove her sexuality from the workplace due to sexual harassment at a previous job. The story does a great job exploring what happened to Isabel in the past and empowering her in the present.

Caleb has a fear of failure because of not living up to his parents’ WASPy standards. His last business went under and his only girlfriend cheated on him a year prior. He doesn’t ever want to be in a relationship again because he’s pretty sure he’ll just screw it up. I got frustrated with his mixed signals: he doesn’t want to be in a relationship with Isabel but then he’s irritated that she wanted to keep things under wraps and not be public at work. She had much more on the line than him! I get that he didn’t fully understand workplace sexual harassment but even then, it felt unfair for him to want to sleep with her and have the benefits of the relationship but not give her any reassurances. That aspect went on a little longer than I’d have liked. I also wanted to know how he’d address his parents’ racism since this is referenced earlier in the plot and Isabel is Cuban American.

Overall, however, this was a delightful and delightfully steamy read. A+ incorporation of the Hitachi Magic Wand into the story.

CW: sexism, workplace sexual harassment, past infidelity

Cute story, shame how women are treated in a male dominated workplace. Very factual and good writing in bosses being harrassing

This is a manuscript I acquired and one of my favorite of Winters books! This series as a whole is fantastic. Winters weaves geeky and kinky beautifully adding true feminist erotic elements to her love stories. You want to devour this series.
